Wes Anderson’s next film will see him unite with Richard Ayoade on the screenplay, it’s been revealed. More here.
Wes Anderson has a new film, The Phoenician Scheme, out this week, and as such, he’s naturally being asked about his next project. While we’re all looking forward to seeing the filmmaker’s follow-up to 2023’s Asteroid City, Anderson revealed just a little about a forthcoming project at a press conference for his latest film.
While the filmmaker doesn’t give away much, he does state that the film will feature darkness. Given that Anderson’s films are known for their sense of whimsy, that in itself is pretty intriguing. What does a Wes Anderson take on darkness even look like? Will it be live action or will he once again be drawn back to the world of puppetry?
Appreciating Anderson remained tight-lipped regarding any kind of plot details,...

Guy Ritchie, Jake Gyllenhaal reteam for Road House 2
Prolific director Guy Ritchie has officially signed on to direct Road House 2, Amazon MGM Studios' followup to the Jake Gyllenhaal-led action hit. Ritchie takes over from Doug Liman, who left the franchise acrimoniously when Amazon sent Road House straight to streaming instead of giving it a theatrical release. It will be Ritchie and Gyllenhaal's third collaboration, following Guy Ritchie's The Covenant and the upcoming In the Grey. The script is by Will Beall (Bad Boys: Ride or Die). Road House is based on the 1989 film starring Patrick Swayze, with Gyllenhaal as an ex-UFC fighter named Dalton who takes a job as a bouncer at a dangerous bar and comes into conflict with a local gang.

Before Chris Hemsworth dons the cape and swings the Stormbreaker in Avengers: Doomsday, the actor has signed on to take a deep dive into the ocean for Patrick Vollrath’s submarine thriller titled, Subversion, which is greenlit at Amazon MGM. The movie, eyeing a fall production start in Australia, is described as a “Die Hard on a submarine” style thriller. Vollrath will direct from a script written by Andrew Ferguson, whose scripts usually land on the Black List, with one titled Blood Rush also in development at Amazon.
The story will follow a once-promising Naval commander (Hemsworth) who is blackmailed into piloting a dangerous submarine carrying illegal cargo across international waters by a cartel-like operation. When he’s thrust into a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, “the man must outmaneuver blockades and navigate perilous threats both in and outside of the submarine.”

MCU and Extraction star Chris Hemsworth continues to carve out his legacy as an action hero as he signs on to lead an action thriller for Amazon that has been described as a “Die Hard on a submarine.” Which, for an elevator pitch, is a pretty solid one.
Titled Subversion, the action outing is all set to be directed by Patrick Vollrath, who will helm the project for Amazon MGM Studios. The thriller has been written by Andrew Ferguson, and you can check out the synopsis for Subversion below, courtesy of THR.
“[Subversion] centers on a once-promising Naval commander (Hemsworth) who is blackmailed by a cartel-like operation into piloting a dangerous submarine carrying illegal cargo across international waters. Thrust into a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, the man must outmaneuver blockades and navigate perilous threats both in and outside of the submarine.”
Patrick Vollrath has experience with confined thrillers, having helmed 2019’s 7500starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

“Can You Keep a Secret,” the upcoming comedy series led by British TV icon Dawn French, is set to premiere on Paramount+ in the U.S.
The series — starring 7-time BAFTA TV nominee French alongside Mark Heap (“Friday Night Dinner”). Craig Roberts (“Submarine”) and Mandip Gill (“Doctor Who”) — recently wrapped filming.
“Can You Keep a Secret?” sees French play domineering granny Debbie Fendon, a woman who will stop at nothing to protect her family. However, as the synopsis goes, the person they most need protecting from is her. When her hermit-like husband, William (Mark Heap), unexpectedly dies, Fendon makes an outlandish decision that will put the family under more pressure than ever before. Because William isn’t actually dead – he just got mistakenly declared it and has been living in the loft while they wait for the life insurance to pay out.

The 2025 Sarasota Film Festival has announced its winners, and one film in particular will draw attention for having screened to much acclaim in this bright red county, ultimately winning the top documentary prize: Kim A. Snyder’s “The Librarians,” a film that’s sounding the alarm strongly about right-wing attacks on free speech, won Best Documentary Feature, after screening at New College, a university itself subjected to a right-wing takeover and attacks on free speech.
The win for “The Librarians” caps another edition of the festival known for its strong curation (largely due to senior programmer Brian Gordon), that brings to Florida’s Gulf Coast titles from Sundance, Cannes, Palm Springs, Mill Valley, and more.
The documentary jury, comprised of freelance journalist Addie Morfoot, Impact Partners co-founder Geralyn Dreyfous, and “Lovers” director Taylor McFadden also awarded a Special Jury Mention to Sasha Wortzel’s “River of Grass,” an environmentally-focused documentary about the Everglades.

If you've finished shaking off the snow from Niflheim and have picked out your preferred size of pet creeper to take home, you're probably in the mood for some more sci-fi fun like Bong Joon-ho's "Mickey 17." The newest film from the Oscar-winning director comes with two Robert Pattinsons for the price of one. The Pattinsons occupy a captivating sci-fi world that sometimes feels like the most expensive "Doctor Who" episode ever made, and we say that with the utmost respect. "Mickey 17" is the kind of refreshing and daring movie we need now more than ever, but it also shared DNA with a handful of other sci-fi gems you can watch right now.
We've compiled a list of excellent post-watches after "Mickey 17" that share the same vibe, themes, and wonderfully bizarre ideas that even Bong Joon-ho himself would likely enjoy watching (mainly because he directed some of...

High school is a confusing but wondrous time. Raging hormones, developing social skills, and new romances are all part of the high school experience, and teen movies are a great way to relive the wonder years. Over time, cinema has captured the magic of first love, heartbreak, and first times in movies like 10 Things I Hate About You and Twilight.
Luckily, high school romances have diversified, and there is a teenage rom-com for everyone. Inclusive love stories and even supernatural ones have refreshed the high school romance movie genre, and these coming-of-age stories are better than ever today. These titles shine exceptionally bright for their romance and other subplots.

Frank Capra is one of a handful of directors, like Alfred Hitchcock, John Ford, and Steven Spielberg, whose name practically signifies its own genre, and like those directors, his body of work is far more complex and varied than the broad strokes by which he’s often defined. Capra tends to be thought of in one of two ways: as either the light, breezy director of handsomely crafted comedies like “Platinum Blonde,” “It Happened One Night,” and “You Can’t Take it With You,” or as the inspirational chronicler of American values and politics who made “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town,” and “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
Both characterizations are true, but they only scratch the surface of Capra’s breadth. His full range is on glorious display in what is unquestionably the physical media event of the season, Sony’s release of the “Frank Capra at Columbia” collection.

Sometimes the alternative music categories at the Grammys are easy to predict. Most people knew Fiona Apple’s massively lauded “Fetch The Bolt Cutters” was winning Best Alternative Album in 2021, for instance. However, this year the field is different, with a few returning favorites who have enough disadvantages to make the race quite murky. Newer acts have their fair share of issues too.

Three major players would seem to be going head-to-head (to-head) for album honors. Vampire Weekend’s “Only God Was Above Us” has become arguably their most acclaimed album, scoring 88 on Metacritic. The record has also done well commercially, better than the other two academy darlings in the category, peaking at number-27 on the Billboard 200. Additionally, the success of their single “Capricorn” (a contender for Best Alternative Performance), which peaked at number-four on the adult alternative chart, could boost the band’s chances.

Long before the days of Prime Video's current Emmy darlings and box office draws, some quainter, more quietly brilliant projects were being pumped out. While current hits like The Boys tout multi-million dollar per episode budgets, not every show has the same luxury. Adam Kinzinger had turned down more than a dozen requests to make a documentary. Then the director of Hot Tub Time Machine walked in.
The Illinois Republican congressman who famously — and largely solitarily — turned on Donald Trump after Jan. 6 was reluctant to participate in a movie that focused on his fading hopes to retain his seat. But Steve Pink, the aforesaid auteur of the jacuzzi, wanted to get more personal than that.
“Everyone else was interested in re-election,” Kinzinger said in an interview with THR as the Toronto International Film Festival was set to start Thursday. “But when I talked to Steve and the team their interest was in the human element — what’s the cost to you and your future kid?”
That conversation was more than two years ago. Now the resulting film, The Last Republican, could make an impact on more than just Kinzinger when it premieres at TIFF 2024 on Saturday.

Dark humor in British comedy movies explores taboo topics like death and sexuality. British filmmakers like Armando Iannucci and Chris Morris typify the nation's sense of humor. From heist comedies to zombie parodies, British films like "A Fish Called Wanda" and "Shaun of the Dead" blend humor with dark themes.
British humor has always been perfectly suited to dark comedies, and many of the funniest British movies of all time are about death, pain and suffering. Dark humor has historically provided a respite for people who otherwise wouldn't discuss taboo topics, so it's no surprise that it has taken hold in British society, which has gone through periods of social conservatism embodied by the national ideal of keeping a stiff upper lip.

In Jesse Moss and Tony Gerber’s documentary “War Game,” the directing duo map out what America’s next coup d’état might look like.
The 94-minute docu takes place on Jan. 6, 2025 – four years after the 2021 Capitol insurrection. Moss and Gerber chronicle an elaborate simulation that dramatically escalates the threat posed by the recent insurrection and re-imagines a nation-wide insurrection in which members of the U.S. military defect to support the losing presidential candidate, while the winning candidate and his advisors war game the crisis in a makeshift White House situation room. The film follows a bipartisan group of U.S. defense, intelligence, and elected policymakers spanning five presidential administrations as they participate in a six hour, unscripted role-play exercise meant to save democracy as America teeters on the brink of civil war.

Alfie Templeman wants listeners to go on a journey with his new album — and not bring their cellphones with them.
On Thursday, the London-based musician announced that he’ll release his LP Radiosoul, which includes a song featuring Nile Rodgers, on June 7. He also dropped the video for the album’s title track, inspired by the “profound impact of social media.”
With Radiosoul, Templeman hopes folks learn to “just enjoy the smaller things a bit more” when they’re listening to the album and “come off your phone for a bit and have a breather!
