Red-Hot Ratings for High Potential and Will Trent Prove ABC Should Embrace Scripted Again
Image
ABC stunned fans last year when it announced an unscripted-heavy fall schedule.

9-1-1, Abbott Elementary, Doctor Odyssey, Grey’s Anatomy, and High Potential were the only five scripted shows to get premiere dates in the fall.

The Rookie, Shifting Gears, and Will Trent were held until midseason, leaving fans confused and irate.

(David Bukach/Disney)

At the time, the Disney-owned network seemed to be considering scaling back on scripted programming in favor of cheaper, unscripted offerings.

With TV ratings flatlining across the board, the networks must get scrappy to ensure they’re making enough money to succeed.

(Carlos Lopez-Calleja/Disney)

The good news is that despite some soft ratings in the scripted front in the fall, many of ABC’s shows have picked up considerable steam in 2025.

High Potential and Will Trent are standouts because they’ve shown tremendous growth, showcasing that certain dramas still play well on broadcast TV.

James Gunn's Dcu Still Has Plenty to Learn From This 12-Year-Old Shared Universe
Image
Quick Links Unlike the Dceu, the Arrowverse Took Time to Build Up Its World The Dcu Must Look to the Arrowverse to Make Its Universe Feel Shared The Greatest Asset the Arrowverse Had Was Character Relationships The Arrowverse Didn't Have a True Finale, but It Was Satisfying

Creature Commandos will soon officially kick off the new DC Universe led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. The animated series will be the first project that is fully "canon" to the Dcu. Despite this, even Gunn himself says his universe doesn't truly begin until the debut of Superman in July 2025. Beyond that a bevy of films, series and other projects chart the path forward. However, James Gunn and his collaborators should look to a previous DC Comics' shared universe for guidance: The Arrowverse suite of shows that aired on The CW between 2012 and 2023.

Gunn openly criticized the strategy (or lack thereof) employed...

Superman & Lois Was Originally Planned for 7 Seasons
Image
The hit superhero series Superman & Lois is less than a month away from airing its fourth and final season on the CW. Season 4 arrives with a two-episode premiere on October 7, 2024, picking up in the aftermath of the previous season finale. Audiences will see the conclusion of Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) facing off against Doomsday, adapting the iconic comic book arc The Death of Superman. A strong way to end Superman & Lois, but tackling the tragic storyline this season was not always the plan. Before the cancellation, the series creators wanted it to go on much longer.

In a report by Entertainment Weekly, the producers of Superman & Lois had hoped the series would run for seven seasons and had planned for that outcome. This is the average life span for most CW superhero shows, as Supergirl ran for six seasons, Legends of Tomorrow lasted seven seasons, and Arrow ended with eight.

6 Arrowverse Shows Ranked Worst To Best
Image
The Arrowverse consisted of multiple series based on popular DC Comics characters, but some struggled to find an audience and fizzled out before reaching their full potential. The Arrowverse's shows all had solid casting, but often struggled more with the specifics of their worlds and the plot within them. More than one Arrowverse show was added into the franchise after it had been running for some time, which could result in more complicated circumstances.

The Arrowverse has no shortage of superhero content for the world to enjoy, though certain series therein are clearly superior to others. Beginning with Arrow, which premiered on the CW in 2012, the Arrowverse quickly expanded into multiple series, all based around popular characters from DC Comics. Over the course of its run, the Arrowverse timeline incorporated six fully canon series while also using the multiverse to connect to other shows, movies, and universes which ultimately remain non-canon to the Arrowverse.

Ava DuVernay’s Favorite Movies: 10 Films the ‘Selma’ and ‘Origin’ Director Wants You to See
Image
Ava DuVernay has only made five narrative features, but she’s one of the busiest women in Hollywood.

Before 2023, the California-born filmmaker’s last feature was her “A Wrinkle in Time” adaptation, released in theaters in 2018 — a five-year gap between releases that’s partially attributable to projects that sputtered in development like DC’s “New Gods” film and a Prince biopic. And yet, DuVernay has remained a constant presence during that relatively long gap, translating her numerous talents to producing and TV work. She created and directed the acclaimed Netflix miniseries “When They See Us,” about the controversial Central Park Five case. Several other TV projects followed, including OWN’s “Cherish the Day,” Netflix’s “Colin in Black and White,” and The CW’s “Naomi.” But while many of those projects have been terrific, it’s great to see the director of great films like “Middle of Nowhere” and “Selma...

Killers Of The Flower Moon Proves That Leonardo DiCaprio Is At His Best When He's Out Of Control
Image
"I never would've guessed that I'd have won for Best Actor in a Comedy," Leonardo DiCaprio said when he collected his Golden Globe for "The Wolf of Wall Street" in 2014. DiCaprio has played many different roles -- some dramatic, some thrilling, and many that seem to be suffering perpetual panic attacks. In the past decade, however, DiCaprio has started to include levity in that anxiety.

In "Killers of the Flower Moon," DiCaprio plays Ernest, a simple guy and a veteran who falls in love with an Osage woman. But soon enough, Ernest gets involved in a crime ring and a conspiracy to murder Osage members for their money. There are hints of DiCaprio's past performances in Ernest. There's a bit of his anxiety-ridden undercover cop from "The Departed," some of the boyish charm from his earlier roles, and also the in-over-his-head escalation of "The Wolf of Wall Street." He is charming,...

Blue Beetle's Green Lantern Easter Egg Widens the DC Universe
Image
The following contains spoilers for Blue Beetle, now playing in theaters.

There was always something a bit dubious about the claim that Blue Beetle tied into James Gunn's DC Universe. The film was mostly through production before Gunn and co-ceo of DC Studios Peter Safran devised their overall plan. The reason this still works, however, is it widens this new Dcu in very subtle ways. The Green Lantern "cameo" in the film's opening is one example of how Blue Beetle makes this new universe feel lived-in.

During the opening sequence of Blue Beetle, the scarab makes a trip through the universe to ancient Earth, and at one point before it lands, a green beam shoots out at it. Director Ángel Manuel Soto confirmed a member of the Green Lantern Corps was on the other end of it. Outside of a brief appearance in a Justice League flashback, the Green...

Misha Collins "Incredibly Bummed" That Gotham Knights Cancelation Ended His Two-Face Story Arc Early
Image
The cancelation of Gotham Knights saw yet another DC project on The CW fail to meet its potential, and one person upset to see it come to a premature end was Misha Collins. The actor starred in the show as Harvey Dent, the iconic Batman character who becomes Two-Face, the hideously disfigured villain. With the series being scrapped after just one season, there were many stories left untold, and Collins lamented on his in a Twitter post. He wrote:

I’m incredibly bummed, and selfishly disappointed to not be able to fully explore my 'villain arc,' but I’m proud of the show we made and so grateful to have been able to work with such a smart,...

A reboot of the classic 1980s TV series of the same name, 2021's well-cast Highway to Heaven is a Lifetime Original movie about Angela, an angel who comes to Earth to help people. Angela is aided in her quest by the school’s principal, Bruce, but her unexplained angelic presence also invites suspicion.

The Arrowverse Has Officially Come To An End, And A Vital Part Of TV History With It
Image
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe was busy changing the way Hollywood studios approach their biggest franchises (and all which that implies), The CW and DC were off making TV history with the Arrowverse. Much like the House of Ideas' multimedia superhero property, the Arrowverse was all over the place in terms of its quality and success. Certain killjoys would tell you its flagship series went on for way too long, while others would blame its limited resources and financing for preventing it from truly doing justice to the epic comic book arcs it adapted.

Overall, though, the Arrowverse was a daring experiment in the best way. That's why we're hitting the pause button and reflecting on its legacy before DC Studios head honchos James Gunn and Peter Safran usher in their shiny-new unified vision for all things DC-related.

With "The Flash" having aired its series finale on May 24, 2023, the Arrowverse...

Ava DuVernay Overall Deal to End at Warner Bros. Television
Ava DuVernay at an event for 30th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards (2015)
Ava DuVernay has “opted to not renew” her overall deal with Warner Bros. Television following its expiration at the end of the month, TheWrap has learned.

The “Selma” director signed the multi-year agreement with Wbtv back in 2018, which was estimated to be valued at around $100 million. The deal was struck with former Wbtv Group chairman Peter Roth, who left the position in 2021.

Sources said that the decision to end the deal was mutual between Wbtv and DuVernay and made prior to the start of the writers’ strike.

DuVernay, who is expected to focus on her current film slate, is currently in post-production on her film “Caste,” which she is directing. The film stars Vera Farmiga, Niecy Nash, Nick Offerman, Jon Bernthal, Audra McDonald and Connie Nielsen.

Ava DuVernay, Warner Bros. TV End Overall Deal
Image
Ava DuVernay has ended her rich overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group, multiple sources confirm to Variety.

While news of this decision comes amid the writers strike, the contract talks were unrelated. DuVernay’s deal was set to expire on May 31 and the two parties came to a “mutual decision not to renew.”

DuVernay signed the multi-year agreement in 2018, which was reported to be valued at $100 million, following the parties’ successful collaboration on OWN’s “Queen Sugar,” which signed off last year after seven seasons.

“Ava DuVernay is one of the leading lights in our industry, a brilliantly talented writer, producer, director and entrepreneur whose ability to inspire with her art is exceeded only by her ability to entertain,” former Warner Bros. TV chief Peter Roth said in a statement announcing the pact. (Channing Dungey is the current chairman and CEO of Wbtvg.)

Gotham Knights' Fallon Smythe Brings Harper Row to Live-Action
Image
The CW's Gotham Knights is finding its own space in a crowded superhero genre -- which is fitting, because the characters are trying to make their own way in a Gotham City that certainly doesn't treat them like heroes. The breakout character is Harper Row, played by Fallon Smythe, whose bond with her brother Cullen is the driving force behind so much of what she does. Could the pressure of being framed for Bruce Wayne's murder drive the siblings apart?

Cbr spoke with Fallon and discussed that possibility and what it means to bring Harper (Aka the superhero Bluebird) into the live-action DC Universe. She reflected on the launch of Gotham Knights coming near the end of DC's legendary Arrowverse, what made Gotham Knights different from those series and the myriad of other superhero shows being released.

TV's LGBTQ Representation Is Down, and Mass Cancellations Aren't Helping
Image
GLAAD’s “Where We Are on TV” study this year found a 6% decrease in the number of LGBTQ characters across broadcast, cable and streaming — and the cancellation/ending of shows surely isn’t helping matters.

Ahead of the latest study’s measurement period, the cancellation of Batwoman, Charmed, DC’s Legend of Tomorrow, 4400, Legacies and Naomi (on just The CW alone), plus Killing Eve, Claws, Dickinson, Astrid and Lily Save the World, The Wilds, Genera+ion, Y: The Last Man, Dear White People, Gentefied and Saved by the Bell (to name but a few), had already made a dent in LGBTQ representation.

Shake Up at The CW
Prior to Nexstar Media Group, Inc. acquiring a 75% ownership interest in The CW Network, the TV network reported $100 million in losses, canceled numerous series and retired long-time president Mark Pedowitz, seemingly signalling the end of grooming popular DC Comics' superheroes into woke TV content 'Lqbtq' characters:

The CW's recently canceled TV series include "Supergirl", "Naomi", "Batwoman", "Legends of Tomorrow", "In the Dark", the "Vampire Diaries" spinoff "Legacies", as well as the network's reboots of "Charmed", "Dynasty", "4400" and "Roswell, New Mexico".

Final seasons this year also include the series "The Flash", "Superman & Lois", "All American", "Nancy Drew", "Stargirl", "Walker" and "Kung Fu".

Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global, the current co-owners of The CW, will each retain a 12.5 percent ownership interest in the network and will continue to produce original, scripted content.

Shake Up at The CW

Caste: Everything We Know So Far About Ava DuVernay's Next Feature
Image
Between Warner Bros. axing her DC Comics movie, "New Gods," Netflix dropping her fantasy novel series adaptation, "Wings of Fire," and The CW canceling her DC superhero drama, "Naomi," it feels like it's been way too long since Ava DuVernay got to make headlines for good reasons. Thankfully, that changes with the celebrated storyteller's next directorial feature, "Caste," which began filming in December 2022 in Georgia ahead of planned shoots in Germany and India. This would be the "Selma" filmmaker's first time behind the camera on a full-length movie since her 2018 Disney fantasy adventure, "A Wrinkle in Time".

To her credit, DuVernay hasn't allowed those various cancelations to slow her down. Quite the opposite, she wrapped up her familial drama series "Queen Sugar" while also helming part of HBO Max's "Dmz" comic book miniseries adaptation over that same period of time (among other things — more on that to come). "Caste...

James Gunn Clarifies Dcu Decision-Making Power After Inheriting Cancellations
Image
James Gunn clarifies the DC Universe decision-making power after inheriting several cancellations. With a new Dcu (formerly known as the Dceu) on the way, the DC brand has been going through major changes over the last few months. On November 1, 2022, DC Studios was officially launched, with Gunn and Peter Safran taking charge as co-CEOs. Under their leadership, they are managing TV, film, animation, and video games tied to the Dcu. As they are crafting the new Dcu, it has also come with some news and decisions that were met with some criticism. Even before DC Studios was launched, Warner Bros. was already experiencing a massive shake-up to their status quo with the DC properties.

The latest news was that Titans and Doom Patrol got cancelled at HBO Max. According to reports, the cancellation was not related to the studio's massive cost-cutting decisions. But it was also not something that Gunn...

Titans And Doom Patrol Will End With Their Fourth Seasons On HBO Max
Image
Following the departure of Walter Hamada from Warner Bros. Discovery, DC Films became DC Studios and the company appointed James Gunn and Peter Safran as the new co-chairs of the all-new DC Universe. However, when they stepped into these new positions, the duo weren't just given the reins to the cinematic universe containing fan-favorite characters such as Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman. They were also brought in to oversee the television and animation projects based on the vast history of DC Comics.

As the winds of change blew through the former DC Extended Universe with projects in development getting canceled, new ones being announced, and the fate of others still up in the air, it was only a matter of time before the TV side of the company experienced more major changes as well. I say more because, thanks to a new direction for The CW, the fate of the...

The CW Apparently Prefers Live Golf To Your Favorite Cancelled Show
Image
The CW's continued scheduling shakeups will now include a live golf broadcast. The network, which is best known for being the home to series like Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, and Riverdale, was put up for sale by its parent companies in early 2022 before being taken over by the Texas-based media company Nexstar, who were granted controlling shares of the company. During this sale process, a vast swath of then-running CW series were given the axe, including Legacies, Dynasty, and Charmed, as well as most of the remaining series in the DC-based Arrowverse (which originated with the 2012 Stephen Amell show Arrow), namely Naomi, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman.

Per TVLine, Nexstar's first move in establishing their new slate of programming is to strike a deal with Liv Golf. This multi-year partnership will begin in 2023 as The CW will air games from various Liv Golf League tournaments live. This will take place on various weekends,...

Stargirl Creator Details Unfulfilled Spinoff Idea
Image
The CW series Stargirl could have had a spinoff, the details of which have been explained by the show's creator. Stargirl, which is based on the character of the same name from DC Comics, premiered in 2020 and ran for three seasons. It followed a teen girl named Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) who finds a staff once owned by the hero Starman and begins to channel its cosmic power.

TVLine sat down with Stargirl creator Geoff Johns for an interview about the series finale, which aired on December 7. During their conversation, he reveals that a storyline in which Jennie Hayden/Jade (Ysa Penarejo) and her twin Todd/Obsidian (Tim Gabriel) were left with Richard Swift/The Shade (Jonathan Cake) to learn how to handle their natural superpowers was intended to be a setup for a spinoff that never came to be. The show would have followed "The Shade and Jade hunting...

James Gunn Responds To Angry Legends Of Tomorrow Fan
Image
DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn has responded to a fan who was angry about the cancelation of DC's Legends of Tomorrow. The series, which ran for seven seasons between 2016 and 2022, is one of the longest-running series in the Arrowverse, a family of interconnected series about DC heroes that have been airing on The CW since the original series, Arrow, premiered in 2012. Earlier this year, three of the remaining Arrowverse series - Naomi, Batwoman, and Legends of Tomorrow - were canceled and it was announced that the next season of The Flash would be its last, leaving only the Supergirl spinoff Superman & Lois on the slate.

On Twitter, Gunn recently answered a fan's question about his favorite Clint Eastwood movies, sharing titles including Unforgiven and For a Few Dollars More. A Legends of Tomorrow fan added a reply saying "who gives a f - #SaveLegendsofTomorrow already." This led Gunn to fire back,...

The CW Sale Details Reveal Network Was Basically Given Away For Free
Image
New details of the deal in which Nexstar acquired The CW reveal that the network was essentially given away for free. After reporting that the network (which took the place of The WB) hadn't recorded a profit since it was created in 2006, its parent companies Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery put it up for sale. In August of this year, a deal was finalized for the Texas-based media company Nexstar to take a 75 stake in The CW.

Today, The Hollywood Reporter shared further details on the deal in which Nexstar acquired The CW. In their breakdown, it was revealed that their 75 stake was given away for free. Once accounts receivable and payable as well as accumulated cash are factored into the deal, this translates to the company receiving about 54 million for the deal, so essentially, Nexstar was paid to take The CW off their hands.

Are Any CW Shows Safe After This Year? Exec Gives Bleak Answer
Image
Most of the series that are currently airing on The CW are still in peril as cancelations loom. The CW, which was formerly The WB, was home to quite a few popular series including The Arrowverse, a family of series derived from DC Comics. However, The CW was put up for sale earlier this year, leaving many of their most popular series on the bubble. They were eventually acquired by Nexstar, who closed their deal last month, but in the meantime they announced the cancelation of an unprecedented slate of series including the Vampire Diaries spinoff Legacies and the Arrowverse's Legends of Tomorrow, Naomi, and Batwoman. They also announced that the upcoming seasons of Riverdale, The Flash, Stargirl, and Nancy Drew would be their last.

Per Variety, Nexstar's quarterly earnings call spelled out bad news for many of the series on the current slate of The CW programming. Nexstar is...

Jason Momoa Says His Dcu Dream Is Coming True Under New Management
Image
Aquaman star Jason Momoa teases that a dream DC Universe project of his is coming true with the launch of DC Studios. 2022 has been one of the rougher, if not the roughest, years for the DC brand when it comes to television and movie properties. Over on The CW, the Arrowverse/DC TV franchise took a massive hit with the network canceling Stargirl, Naomi, Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman. Warner Bros. Discovery also sent shockwaves through Hollywood by scrapping the Batgirl movie that was in the works for HBO Max, despite it wrapping principal photography back in the spring, as the studio sought to capitalize on a tax write-off to help make up their 3 billion in debt.

While the shake-ups have caused concern for the DC brand's future, Warner Bros. Discovery is not giving up on the superhero business anytime soon. With the DC Films division coming to an end following Walter Hamada's departure,...

James Gunn Responds to Release the Ayer Cut & Other DC Fan Campaigns
Image
DC Studios boss James Gunn responds to DC fan campaigns, including saving Legends of Tomorrow and releasing David Ayer's original Suicide Squad cut. 2022 has been a rough year for the DC Comics brand when it comes to television and film, with several projects getting canceled following the Warner Bros. Discovery merger. On the television side of things, The CW canceled both Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman, Naomi, and most recently, Stargirl, with only three DC TV shows coming up in 2023 on the network. As far as DC Films go, Warner Bros. Discovery shocked the industry when they made the decision to scrap HBO Max's Batgirl movie, which was set to star Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon. Despite having wrapped principal photography in late March, the studio still opted to shelve the highly-anticipated DC movie.

Other DC projects to take a hit from the merger were HBO Max's Wonder Twins movie...

The CW’s Future Lies in 14 Blank Post-Its on Brad Schwartz’s Wall
Image
New CW Entertainment president Brad Schwartz has one job: Make The CW profitable for the first time ever — and do it by 2025, as new parent company Nexstar promised Wall Street.

On Wednesday, the day his post was announced, Schwartz told IndieWire that he “hopes to beat” the deadline.

“It’s definitely not going to be easy,” said Schwartz, whose official start date is November 7. Already, he said, there are some pieces in place, including “a lot” of revenue from ad sales and digital. “We’re not starting from absolute scratch.”

Schwartz has made a career out of turnarounds, launches, and rebrands. There’s been seven to date, the most notable being the time he rebranded the TV Guide Network as Pop TV, which brought us “Schitt’s Creek” and “One Day at a Time.” We began our telephone conversation by asking Schwartz if The CW needs a new name.

“What I...

Does The CW See A Future For The Winchesters Beyond Season 1?
Image
Four episodes into its debut season, "The Winchesters" was starting to feel too good to be true. The idea of The CW's 15-season behemoth "Supernatural" getting a spinoff was always a daunting prospect — after all, they've tried this many times before. While prior attempts never made it past their backdoor pilots, "The Winchesters" quickly got the go-ahead for a 13-episode season (plus the possibility of a full 22-episode order). But even when the show finally started hitting the airwaves, fans were plenty skeptical of the "Supernatural" prequel.

Told from the perspective of narrator Dean Winchester (voiced by Jensen Ackles), "The Winchesters" is the story of how his and Sam's parents fell in love and saved the world — a story that was already partially told by the Og series. So why craft an entire prequel around a romance we've already seen play out? I still don't have an answer for that,...

The CW Lays Off 30+ Employees Following Nexstar Takeover
Image
Roughly 30-40 employees of The CW were laid off on Tuesday by new owner Nexstar Media, IndieWire has learned.

The move is the first large scale overhaul at the CW after Nexstar, the largest television-station owner in the United States, took control of the channel’s operation on October 3. Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global, The CW’s previous owners, sold a majority of their unprofitable joint venture to Nexstar in June.

Among those laid off on Tuesday were Paul Hewitt, the CW communications chief since it formed from the merger of Upn with The WB in 2006. In his place, Beth Feldman has been named SVP of Network Communications, taking on the role in addition to her current duties as Nexstar’s executive director of communication, Networks division.

“For the past 20 years, I have been incredibly fortunate to have played a role, albeit a small one, in helping shape, influence...

Nexstar Lays Off At Least 30 CW Employees (Exclusive)
Image
Nexstar laid off between 30-40 staffers at the CW network Tuesday, marking the first sweeping staffing overhaul at the “Walker” broadcaster since it changed ownership, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Among those cuts were Paul Hewitt, the longtime CW comms chief, who has been replaced by Beth Feldman. Additionally, multiple execs in distribution, strategy and affiliate relations were let go, with Google vet Rebekah Dopp taking over those departments.

Nexstar is wasting little time revamping The CW, a plan that began with the replacement of longtime CW president Mark Pedowitz being ousted upon the close of Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery’s sale of the network to Nexstar Oct. 3. Also cut in the wake of the deal were streaming and branding exec Rick Haskins and ad sales head Mitch Nedick.

Following half a year of speculation and buildup to the sale, TV station giant Nexstar has...

Stargirl Season 3 Will Be DC Show's Last
Image
The CW is losing another DC TV show as Stargirl season 3 will be the last season. While the Arrowverse has been one of the flagship franchises for The CW since 2012, Greg Berlanti's interconnected universe has been facing a change to its status quo in 2022. In previous years, the DC TV shows have always been part of The CW's strategy, as they have continued to be renewed season after season. But when reports emerged in early 2022 that WarnerMedia and Paramount were looking to sell majority ownership of The CW, that was the beginning of the massive shake-up as both Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman, along with Naomi, were canceled this spring.

While The Flash and Superman & Lois are set to return in 2023, Stargirl has been keeping the Arrowverse slate going this fall, as season 3 premiered a few months ago. Starring Brec Bassinger as Courtney Whitmore, Stargirl has focused on the...

Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki in Supernatural: Zur Hölle mit dem Bösen (2005)
‘The Winchesters’ Was The CW’s Most-Watched Debut This Season
Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki in Supernatural: Zur Hölle mit dem Bösen (2005)
Supernatural fans really showed up for the premiere of the origin story of the Winchester family on The CW on Tuesday, October 11. The Winchesters was the network’s most-watched series debut since Naomi on January 2022, according to Deadline. The first episode averaged 757,000 total viewers, and it is just behind Walker as the CW’s second most-watched premiere this season. When the first season of Supernatural aired in 2005 on the WB, it was never a huge ratings performer. The show averaged a little more than 4.5 million viewers per episode. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Supernatural developed a strong fanbase because The CW’s first Netflix deal included seasons one through six of the series, which helped to develop the audience. The series finale drew in 1.38 million viewers. Tumblr also helped to boost the Supernatural fandom, with Fansided reporting the series had the largest amount of engagement on Tumblr from any live-action television series.

‘The Winchesters’ Ranks As CW’s Most-Watched Series Debut So Far This Season
Image
It’s a small success, but the CW will surely take it these days: Tuesday’s series premiere of The Winchesters was The CW’s most-watched debut so far this season in total viewers.

The Supernatural spinoff averaged 757,000. It was the network’s most-watched series debut since Naomi on January 2022, and it is just behind Walker as the CW’s second most-watched premiere this season.

It was also the CW’s most-watched telecast in the time period since June 28, 2022 (Superman & Lois).

The Winchesters is a prequel to the CW’s long-running Supernatural, centered on Dean and Sam Winchester’s parents – John and Mary. Told from the perspective of narrator Dean Winchester (voiced by Jensen Ackles), The Winchesters tells how John met Mary and then went on to save the world.

Over the weekend at New York Comic Con, it was announced that Tom Welling would join the series this season.
