The original double steel cage main event was scheduled to be
Ric Flair vs. Lex Luger (
Larry Pfohl) for the WCW World Championship title, and
Missy Hyatt and the Steiner Brothers (
Rick Steiner and
Scott Steiner)
vs. Paul E. Dangerously (
Paul Heyman),
Arn Anderson, and
Barry Windham, but Flair was fired by then-WCW Executive Vice President
Jim Herd over a contract dispute and stripped of the title, while Scott Steiner suffered a bicep injury. Luger defeated Windham for the vacated title instead, complete with him turning heel (bad guy), which nobody wanted to see. The Hardliners (
Dick Murdoch and
Dick Slater) dragged Missy away from the cage (the real reason being that the Maryland State Athletic Commission wouldn't sanction inter-gender matches). Rick and Arn basically performed a half-hearted match, then Paul E. tagged in and Rick clotheslined and pinned him. Meanwhile, Flair kept the physical NWA/WCW World Championship title after leaving a $25,000 security deposit on it, and brought it to the WWF with him in September that year. WCW had to commission a new world championship belt. However, the new WCW World Championship was not ready in time for this event, so WCW had to improvise by using a Championship Wrestling from Florida title belt owned by
Dusty Rhodes.
