Canal Boat Diaries

I watched the first series and found it very repetitive (opening one lock after another) and watching Robbie hit the start engine button 20 times an episode. He has no personal life, probably due to living on the boat. We never really see him interact in a real way with any other people. Just walking through towns to get supplies and an occasional meal. He doesn't say if he's part of any of the numerous narrow boat communities, who have tons of events throughout the year. Maybe he'd find a partner THAT way. I found him engaging but he seems aimless and slightly depressed. He's said all his relationships fail, probably due to his obsession with narrow boats!

Those overhead shots, the ripples on the water, the rhythmic acoustics from the engine, the breathtaking scenery and his laid back narration - even when things go a bit awry, just make for an idyllic experience all from the comfort of your armchair. Only one small gripe - would have liked a bit more info on some of the places he encountered along the way. At the end of the day though an excellent half an hour of tv which seems like only five minutes, hope there is more to come.

American viewer. I have watched S1-4 (S5 not available yet to me) Robbie faces mechanical calamities, canal lock troubles, small income, life & relationship challenges with a tactful vulnerability and restraint for our climate of 2024 social media oversharing! I'd enjoy even more info on the historical Industrial Revolution conditions of his canals. He has 30 minutes to take us however many miles he plans! The tidal rivers he managed in S4 terrified me, just watching! Such helpful fellow boaters and lock volunteers demonstrate folks want to help one another. Appreciate Robbie stops to honor musicians, poets, canal engineers in towns along the way. Quietly engaging from an engaging boater. Keep your two-cylinder engine puttering for as long as you enjoy your life, Robbie! Thanks to you and your production team.

I love this series showing life on the canal and Robbie getting to grips with the highs and sometimes lows of locks!! You enjoy the British scenery, wildlife and historic landscape he tours through which is amazing. I can't recommend this series enough it's a pleasant change of pace and I love his attempts at cooking and making curries, I can so relate. We need more of these.
