What Is A House of Dynamite About? Kathryn Bigelow’s Next Netflix Film
Image
A House of Dynamite is a Kathryn Bigelow-directed Netflix film, coming to the streamer on October 24, 2025. The film is poised to be an explosive (literally) action thriller. It will also be Bigelow’s first film for the streamer since Aurora was scrapped.

The official logline for the film reads (via Tudum):

When a single, unattributed missile is launched at the United States, a race begins to determine who is responsible and how to respond.

Government officials must get to work and identify the culprit before the United States is hit with an even bigger threat. We can expect ample political tensions, high stakes, special operatives, and warring nations in the upcoming film.

21 Years Later, Denzel Washington’s $70 Million Kidnapping Thriller Surges on Global Streaming Charts
Image
Denzel Washington has earned nine Oscar nominations for performances in his career, but one film that many fans feel is one of his greatest snubs has returned to streaming charts more than 20 years later. Washington stars alongside Christopher Walken (Severance) and Dakota Fanning (The Watchers) in Man on Fire, the 2004 tragic kidnapping thriller following a former CIA operative-turned-bodyguard who goes on a brutal mission of vengeance following an unspeakable act against the family he was hired to protect. In the United States, Man on Fire is streaming on Hulu/Disney+, but globally, the film is streaming on Starz, and it’s one of the top 10 most popular movies in Tunisia and Algeria. Man on Fire was not well-liked by critics — the film earned 38% from reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the audience-driven Popcornmeter sits at 89%, making the film one of Washington’s fan-favorites.

Man on Fire is based on the novel by A.J. Quinnell,...

Denzel Washington's Forgotten $150 Million Novel Adaptation Is Heading to Streaming This August
Image
Joseph Sargent’s 1974 heist thriller The Taking of Pelham One Two Three is considered one of the finest action thrillers in Hollywood history. Boasting a near-perfect 98% Rotten Tomatoes rating, Sargent certainly did the John Godey source novel of the same name justice. Inevitably, as with many such films, a remake was always on the cards, with that remake finally arriving at the end of the noughties courtesy of the late director, Tony Scott.

Now, over 15 years on from the remake and over 50 years since Sargent's classic, the 2009 version of The Taking of Pelham 123is back for your streaming pleasure on Starz, as of August 1. StarringDenzel Washington andJohn Travolta, this flashy adaptation, to many, is all style and no substance, with the film sadly failing to make the same mark as its predecessor. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film fell to almost half the score of Sargent's effort, with critics...

The 10 Greatest Three-Movie Runs by an Actor Ever
Image
What is the greatest three-movie run by an actor? Well, first, let me define what I mean by greatest, and what I mean by three-movie run. For my purposes, “greatest” is measured by an equal consideration of movie quality, performance quality, box office, and pop culture relevance. In other words, the films/performances have to be good and well-known. Now, a three-movie run just means three consecutive films in an actor’s filmography. I’m going based on release date, so sometimes having multiple films in a year removes an actor from contention.

So, a good three-movie run is not easy to pull off.. There are a lot of well-known actors who don’t even sniff this list. Here are a few actors you won’t see in the Top 10: Matt Damon, Ethan Hawke, Nicolas Cage, Matthew McConaughey Bradley Cooper. I tried to get a Jack Nicholson 1970’s run on the list,...

Denzel Washington's 'The Book of Eli' Is a Streaming Hit 15 Years Later
Image
It's safe to say that Denzel Washington is one of the finest actors of this, or any generation. His career has spanned more than five decades, and along the way, he's given some memorable performances in movies like Glory, Malcolm X, and Training Day. In the mid-2000s, he began branching out from starring in dramas to action flicks, and while the results were mixed, there was one movie that stood out for being different from all the rest: the post-apocalyptic neo-Western The Book of Eli.

Released in 2010, The Book of Eli sees Washington starring as a nomad who, thirty years after a nuclear holocaust, is hell-bent on delivering his copy of a mysterious book that promises salvation to a broken world to a safe location on the West Coast of the United States. Along the way, Gary Oldman's maniacal villain, Bill Carnegie, tries to thwart his plans, with...

Beginning July 1, Déjà Vu will be available to stream on Tubi. Set in New Orleans, the 2006 movie stars Washington as Atf Special Agent Douglas Carlin, who travels back in time in an attempt to prevent a domestic terrorist attack and save the woman he's fallen in love with. Val Kilmer and Bruce Greenwood co-star as FBI special agents, with Paula Patton and Jim Caviezel rounding out the main cast as Claire Kuchever and Carroll Oerstadt, respectively. Despite mixed reviews from critics, Déjà Vu was a commercial success, grossing $180.6 million worldwide against its $75 million production budget.

Stephen King Feels This Controversial Horror Remake Is Just As Good As Silence Of The Lambs
Image
Dennis Iliadis' 2009 revenge film "The Last House on the Left" is about Mari (Sara Paxton), a young woman who, while hanging out with her friend Paige (Martha MacIsaac), is brutally kidnapped by a group of recently escaped prisoners. The prisoners attempt to drive off with their victims, but there is a fracas in the car when Mari and Paige start to fight back, causing them to accidentally crash into a tree. In revenge, the prisoners stab, sexually assault, and then shoot their captives.

Seeking shelter, the prisoners arrive at a local lake house ... not knowing that it belongs to Mari's parents (Tony Goldwyn and Monica Potter). Of course, it's only a matter of time before the latter duo figures out what's happening and discover what the prisoners did to Mari. Will the parents have the temerity and the wherewithal to apprehend or murder their daughter's attackers?

A Gritty Denzel Washington Crime Thriller Is Finding An Audience On Hulu Two Decades Later
Image
If you were to ask John David Washington his favorite movies, he'd name two starring his father. One is "Glory," which provided Denzel Washington with his breakthrough role and remains one of the best Civil War movies of all time. The other, however, was one of Denzel's five collaborations with the late, great Tony Scott. The pair worked together on "Crimson Tide," "Déjà Vu," "The Taking of Pelham 123," and "Unstoppable," but it was 2004's "Man on Fire" that represented the very best of the Washington/Scott collabs.

This Denzel actioner might have a surprisingly low Rotten Tomatoes score, but don't let that fool you. When it comes to the star's action efforts, there are few better films in his filmography than "Man on Fire." Long before the Oscar winner took on the role of Robert McCall in the "Equalizer" movies, he was showcasing a similar badassery in Scott's project,...

The Sopranos Star Held Denzel Washington by His Collar, Got Too Aggressive in a Heated Scuffle During Crimson Tide
Image
There’s a new biography in the market about The Sopranos lead star James Gandolfini, and it brings up some of his old stories from his film and TV sets. In Jason Bailey’s Gandolfini: Jim, Tony, and the Life of a Legend, the author mentioned Gandolfini’s old scuffle with Denzel Washington on the set of their 1995 movie, Crimson Tide.

The biography shared a report from that time, which suggested that the Enough Said actor got aggressive with Washington during one scene. However, the two actors quickly became friends on the set after that incident.

The film was a submarine action thriller directed by Tony Scott, focusing on the clash between a commanding officer and his new executive officer. The roles were played by Gene Hackman and Washington. Gandolfini played Supply Officer Lt. Bobby Dougherty in the film.

What went down between The Sopranos actor James Gandolfini and Denzel Washington on the film set?...

Denzel Washington’s 'Unstoppable' Is Surprisingly Authentic
Image
Denzel Washington began his historic creative partnership with director Tony Scott with the 1995 submarine action thriller film Crimson Tide, which was a commercial and critical success and established the actor as a box-office star. Washington and Scott next re-teamed with the 2004 action thriller film Man on Fire, followed by the 2006 science-fiction action film Déjà Vu, and the 2009 action thriller film The Taking of Pelham 123. The partnership ended with Washington and Scott’s fifth, and arguably the best, collaboration, the 2010 disaster action thriller film Unstoppable, which marked Scott’s final feature directorial outing prior to his tragic 2012 death.

Unstoppable stars Washington as Frank Barnes, a veteran Pennsylvania railroad engineer who races against time alongside rookie conductor Will Colson, played by Chris Pine, to prevent a runaway freight train loaded with hazardous chemicals from derailing in a populated area. While Unstoppable was a commercial and critical success at the time of its theatrical release,...

Denzel Washington Steals a Spot in Max's Top 10 With 'Inside Man'
Image
Denzel Washington is no stranger to collaborating with the industry's most prominent filmmakers, especially Spike Lee. However, while most know that both joined forces for the Oscar-nominated Malcom X, a relatively underrated title paired them in a thrilling heist film with an all-star supporting cast. Inside Man, released in 2006, received acclaim from critics and audiences flocked to the cinemas, earning it $186 million worldwide on a $45 million budget. Almost 20 years later, it has reclaimed its audience, this time in the streaming world.

Inside Man made it to Max's Top 10 most watched movies this week, according to Flix Patrol. The 2006 thriller is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with an 86% score from critics, while audiences are equally enamored, garnering an 85% Popcornmeter rating. Inside Man features Washington playing a detective who is caught in a high-octane hostage negotiation with an incredibly intelligent bank robber played by Clive Owen. However, not everything is as clear-cut as it appears,...

Why ‘Will Trent’ Is Still Going Strong in Season 3
Image
Will Trent co-creator Daniel Thomsen credits the title character’s refusal to let life beat him as the main reason fans love the ABC series, now in its third season. “Will is somebody who has had a really rough shake, has the scars to prove it, and he isn’t going to give up. He’s going to do whatever it takes to get up every morning. I think people like that,” Thomsen tells The Hollywood Reporter.

That “rough shake” includes growing up motherless and being raised in the foster care system, often enduring physical abuse, before rising to become a special agent within the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (Gbi) and excelling, despite being dyslexic. At work, he’s assembled a found family.: Amanda (Sonja Sohn), his boss, is a mother figure; Faith (Iantha Richardson), his most recent partner, is like the little sister whom he squabbles but also adores and protects.

Tony Roberts Dies: ‘Serpico’, ‘Annie Hall’ & Broadway Actor Was 85
Image
Tony Roberts, the actor who collaborated with such filmmakers as Woody Allen and Sidney Lumet, has died. He was 85.

The Broadway actor’s daughter and sole survivor Nicole Barley confirmed Roberts death to The New York Times after he died on Friday at his Manhattan home following complications with lung cancer.

In Play It Again, Sam (1972), Annie Hall (1977), Stardust Memories (1980) and Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), Roberts was known for playing Allen’s nonchalant friend, balancing the auteur and star’s anxious onscreen presence.

The actor also appeared in Lumet’s Serpico (1973) and Just Tell Me What You Want (1980).

Roberts’ other film credits include Star Spangled Girl (1971), The Taking of Pelham 123 (1974) and Amityville 3-D (1983), as well as episodes of shows like The Love Boat, Trapper John, M.D., Matlock, The Carol Burnett Show, All My Children and Law & Order.

Stephen King Loved A Disappointing Remake Starring Denzel Washington & John Travolta
Image
He might be a master of frightening readers to ridiculous lengths, but there's more to author Stephen King than scares, psychotic clowns, and kids that shine. For one, his favorite film isn't even a horror: the writer of books like "The Shining," and Goodreads' highly-rated entry, "The Stand," deemed William Friedkin's "Sorcerer" his number-one watch. King is fond of praising movies online. In a list submitted to Entertainment Weekly in 2003, the author put together an interesting playlist of films that had caught his eye that year, including Tony Scott's "The Taking of Pelham 123." A remake of the 1974 film starring Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw, Scott's take starred Denzel Washington as an Mta dispatcher who faced off against John Travolta as the leader of a gang of criminals who holding hostages on a subway train.

Praising the film at the time, King said: "Director Tony Scott's most lucid and suspenseful movie.

Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor Is Nobody’s Second Fiddle
Image
Behind every great man, as the old, outdated expression goes, there’s a great woman — and there’s a pretty decent chance she’s been played by Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.

The 55-year-old actress has built a long, inspiring career out of portraying characters who linger just off center stage: the long-suffering wife of Cuba Gooding Jr.’s Navy Seal in 2000’s Men of Honor; Ray Charles’ mistress in Jamie Foxx’s 2004 biopic Ray; Yusef Salaam’s mother in 2019’s When They See Us (her first Emmy nomination); and Venus and Serena Williams’ mom in the 2021 Will Smith film about their dad, King Richard (her first Oscar nom).

“If we only know the figurehead and we don’t know the women who were doing the groundwork, it’s not the full truth,” she tells THR. “We’d be telling a half story.”

She fills in the other half once again in the just-released Nickel Boys,...

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From Serpico
Image
Over 50 years ago, Sidney Lumet released "Serpico," a powerful indictment of NYPD police corruption that was based on a true story. Decades later, New York's "boys in blue" are still being consistently called out for corruption, but at the time of the film's release in 1973, "Serpico" felt like it might just cause a sea change in the way America — or at least Hollywood — saw its law enforcement systems. "Sidney Lumet's 'Serpico,' the first in what threatens to be an avalanche of movies about policemen, picks up the old cop film and brings it with lights flashing and sirens blaring into the middle of the Watergate era," Vincent Canby wrote in his original review for the New York Times.

"Serpico" may not have ended up changing the world, but the movie based on the book of the same name by Peter Maas was a box office and critical hit,...

I Know Im Going To Be BBQ: Denzel Washingtons $167.8M Train Action Movie Nearly Resulted In Disaster, Reveals Stuntman
Image
One stunt in a Denzel Washington action movie nearly went horribly wrong, a stuntman reveals. Throughout his career, Washington has appeared in many celebrated roles, winning Oscars for his performances in Glory and Training Day. He continues to expand his filmography alongside well-known Hollywood talent. Unlimited in terms of range or genre, some other credits include Malcolm X, Much Ado About Nothing, Remember the Titans, American Gangster, and Fences (which he also directed). However, it has been Washingtons action thriller roles that do particularly well at the box office, as evidenced by The Equalizer franchise.

Among his more famous movies is 2004s Man on Fire, where he played John W. Creasy, a former CIA agent who targets criminals responsible for kidnapping Lupita Ramos (Dakota Fanning). That film marked Washingtons second collaboration with the late Tony Scott, having already starred in Crimson Tide. The pair would reunite for three more riveting productions,...

John David Washington's Favorite Movies Of All Time Include Two Starring His Father Denzel
Image
It's not that Denzel Washington hasn't made some bad movies — the one where he played the ghost of a lawyer who has to guide Bob Hoskins through a police investigation is pretty indefensible. But the fact is that the best Denzel movies are some of the best movies ever made. The man just knows how to radiate charisma no matter what part he's playing, and his films are all the better for it. Does it mean that you can't help but see Denzel instead of his character most of the time? Well, it depends what era you're talking about.

For many who grew up with Denzel in his "Training Day" era, the actor very much just seemed like his whole Mo was to just show up, be Denzel, and go home. But those of us who were, at the time, too young to remember "Malcom X"-era Denzel were missing...

All 12 Denzel Washington Movies From The 2000s, Ranked
Image
Denzel Washington is one of the most recognizable and talented actors of his generation, having a presence and charisma on screen that is virtually unrivaled. Over his stellar 40-year career, he has embodied some of the most morally ambiguous and larger-than-life characters that have made him an icon in cinema. In every role he plays, he is known for the ruthless authenticity and genuine immersion that he brings each character to life in his extensive filmography.

The 2000s were a decade when Washington continued his monumental run, performing in some of his most career defining roles, such as the energetic Detective Alonzo Harris in Training Day or the subdued and intellectual Melvin B. Tolson in The Great Debaters. His portrayals are usually the shining centerpiece of the films he appears in, and his aura brightens the rest of the cast around him. It's this quality, combined with his longevity and...

Why Denzel Washington Quit & Then Rejoined One Of His Best Action Thrillers
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

There are few director/actor combinations quite as good as Tony Scott and Denzel Washington. The duo made five movies together ranging from "The Taking of Pelham 123" remake to the downright excellent "Crimson Tide," which marked their first collaboration. Their final film together came in 2010 in the form of "Unstoppable," which is not only one of the actor's best thrillers, but also Scott's final film. It now feels like a gift, but Washington almost backed out of the project entirely.

For context, Washington was at the height of his powers at this time. The actor finally won a Best Actor Oscar in 2001 for his role in "Training Day" (he had previously won Best Supporting Actor for "Glory"), which led to a string of solid hits throughout the early 2000s, culminating in 2007s "American Gangster," which recently found new life...

The Killer Instinct of Sandy King Carpenter
Image
You can’t bullshit Sandy King Carpenter — a horror legend you shouldn’t call a “final girl” if only because she’s never been on the run.

A pioneering comics publisher, former script supervisor for Corman and Cassavetes, the wife of director John Carpenter, and more, King has been on a creative killing spree since she started in Hollywood in the early ’70s. Sharp as a knife, she’s a multihyphenate writer/producer/director talent who can’t help but take a stab at anything and everything that intrigues her.

“People are always talking about visualizing goals, but I’m not that person,” King told IndieWire in conversation at the Carpenter office in Los Angeles. “If it’s interesting, I do it, and that’s served me well. I learned lots of things, and I worked for lots of interesting people. It all turned into knowledge that became a career.

One Of Denzel Washington's Most Beloved Films Has A Surprisingly Low Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
As Marty McFly once prophetically claimed after his game-changing appearance at 1955's Enchantment Under the Sea dance, "I guess you guys aren't ready for that yet. But your kids are gonna love it." This phrase pretty perfectly sums up the phenomenon of reappraisal in the arts, especially cinema. Whether a film is truly something pioneering and ahead of its time, or whether it's just lost in the shuffle due to extenuating circumstances, the (relative) immortality of movies allows them to be periodically rediscovered and newly appreciated for what they are, once removed from the weight of expectation and other contemporary factors. This doesn't just happen to films that fly under the radar, either; even the most high-profile releases, movies featuring A-list megastars made by big name directors, can initially receive a tepid response only to become bonafide classics years, perhaps even decades, later. For examples of this, just take a...

‘Salem’s Lot’ Cast and Character Guide | Photos

“Salem’s Lot” is once again getting the adaptation treatment, this time as a film from “Annabelle Comes Home” director and “It” screenwriter Gary Dauberman.

The latest crack at Stephen King’s acclaimed vampire novel managed to pull together a cast of recognizable faces despite being pulled from a theatrical release to go directly to Max. “Salem’s Lot” follows a writer’s return to his hometown, searching for inspiration for his next book, only to find out the place is slowly being overrun by vampires.

Here’s a rundown of the cast and characters in the horror adaptation.

Lewis Pullman as Ben Mears

Lewis Pullman plays writer Ben Mears.

Pullman is likely most recognized for playing Lt. Bob Floyd in “Top Gun: Maverick.” He’s also starred in Apple TV+’s “Lessons in Chemistry” as Calvin Evans and Prime Video’s “Outer Range” as Rhett Abbott, as well as the films...

Released in theaters in 2019, Rambo: Last Blood was directed by Adrian Grnberg. The film brings back Stallone for the fifth and likely last-ever time he'll star as the iconic John Rambo character. This time, Rambo heads to Mexico in order to rescue his adopted niece from a dangerous cartel. Though time is catching up with Rambo at this point in his life, the character is no less deadly than he's ever been, allowing the unkillable hero to go out with a bang.

Denzel Washington Reflects on Working with Tony and Ridley Scott
Image
Denzel Washington has worked with many directors over his long career, and that includes the legendary Scott brothers, Tony and Ridley. Gladiator II will be the second time Washington has worked with the elder of the two, Ridley, although his list of work under Tony is much more prolific. Although the movie does not need any introduction - as the sequel to 2000's Gladiator - the belated sequel has put together an outstanding cast, among which Washington's resume is one of the most impressive.

The beloved Hollywood icon sat down with Empire for their Gladiator II issue and reflected on what it was like reuniting with Ridley Scott for the first time since working with him on American Gangster almost two decades ago. Naturally, this also led to the actor being asked to share how the directors compare to each other. However, Washington wasn't about to divulge his thoughts on that particular subject,...

Netflix Shines Light On 1994 As Great Year For Film; What Got Left On Cutting Room Floor

Who says 1994 was a classic year for cinema? Netflix begins today to make that argument, curating a release of 17 films that turned 30 this year. The streamer has its list below. I have mine, and with the exception of the seminal Farrelly Brothers-directed Dumb & Dumber with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, and Luc Besson’s Leon: The Professional, the film that stars Jean Reno and a sinister Gary Oldman and introduced the world to the outsized talent Natalie Portman, and maybe Ron Howard’s The Paper, there’s a lot missing. How about Forrest Gump, The Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, The Lion King, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Clear and Present Danger, Sicario, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Interview With the Vampire, Speed, Ed Wood, and the other two films in a starmaking year for Jim Carrey, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask. Bill Cobbs Remembered: Fellow Actors Pay Tribute to an Indelible Figure of Cinema and Television
Image
Bill Cobbs put in the time and the work. He was 90 years old when he passed away June 25 at his home in Riverside, California and leaves behind a career of over 200 screen credits, along with a number of theatrical performances. Born Wilbert Francisco Cobbs in Cleveland, Ohio circa 1934, a time and a place where a Black man wasn’t always assured his dignity and especially not his rights, Cobbs came into this world and grew at a moment where seeing himself on the big screen wasn’t exactly possible. Sure, there were exceptions with stereotypes played by Stepin Fetchit as well as the grandeur of Paul Robeson, but the idea of being an actor wasn’t one that came automatically for Cobbs. He tried his hand at music, spent eight years in the U.S. Air Force as a radar technician and occasional stand-up comedian, sold cars, even worked at Ibm,...

New Prequel To Denzel Washington's $157 Million Hit Action Movie Breaks 2 Career Trends
Image
The Book of Eli's new prequel show breaks career trends for Denzel Washington, being the first prequel to a movie he starred in. Denzel Washington's movies have rarely launched franchises, making The Book of Eli's prequel show a unique endeavor. The show marks the first time Denzel Washington has been recast in a franchise, with John Boyega taking over the lead role, adding pressure to Boyega's performance.

The Book of Eli's new prequel show breaks two major career trends for Denzel Washington. The 2010 action movie The Book of Eli starred Denzel Washington as a blind warrior protecting the Bible in the apocalypse. It was a surprise success, making $157 million at the box office, which typically would leave Hollywood studios to begin thinking of ways to continue the franchise. The Book of Eli's ending complicated matters by killing Washington's character. This left the options of a...

Denzel Washington & Antoine Fuqua's Next Movie Will Break A Massive Record Set 13 Years Ago
Image
Denzel Washington's next movie with Antoine Fuqua will break his record for most frequent collaborator, solidifying their over 20-year partnership. Their previous record was tied with Tony Scott, who directed Denzel in five movies before his passing in 2012. The upcoming Hannibal movie is a fresh and exciting collaboration between Washington and Fuqua, surpassing expectations for their record-breaking film.

Denzel Washington's next movie with director Antoine Fuqua is set to make history, breaking a record established 13 years ago. Over the course of Denzel's incredible career, he has worked with some great directors, ranging from Spike Lee to Ridley Scott and Robert Zemeckis. Thanks to his longevity and incredible status in Hollywood, this has included being very selective about who he works with the most. Starting back with Training Day in 2001, a strong relationship with director Antoine Fuqua began, and the fruits of this partnership remain over two decades later.

Every Denzel Washington & Tony Scott Movie Ranked
Image
Denzel Washington and Tony Scott's collaborations produced some of Hollywood's best works of the '90s and 2000s, spanning from action adventures to psychological thrillers. Despite their different styles, Washington and Scott successfully blended their sensibilities to create unique and effective movies. The weakest collaboration between the actor and director was their remake of The Taking of Pelham 123, but Washington's performance and the emphasis on post-9/11 anxieties made it memorable.

Denzel Washington's collaborations with Tony Scott produced some of Hollywood's best works between an A-list actor and a bankable director that the entertainment industry has ever seen. From the 1990s to the 2010s, Washington and Scott collaborated on a broad range of projects that saw them both play into their strengths and also go against expectations. Washington and Scott's chemistry allowed the duo to produce five unique and entertaining movies ranging from action adventures to psychological thrillers.

Review: ‘Jawan’ solidifies Shah Rukh Khan as Bollywood’s Mass Action Entertainer
Image
There was a time when people used to say “In Bollywood, either sex sells or Shah Rukh Khan”. Here we are 20 years later and it still is true even today. Such is the box office pull King Khan has wielded over audiences since his return. Jawan is South Indian director Atlee’s fifth film and boy does he go all in for this one. It is as if someone told him this was his only shot at making a Bollywood film. He did not hold back as the film is technically brilliant in all aspects from direction to cinematography to the VFX to the production design etc. Atlee has taken his working formula from Tamil films and made an all out mass entertainer for the Bollywood audience.

The story is pretty straightforward and predictable. If you have seen all of Atlee’s previous films, you will realize very quickly that...

Denzel Washington's Best Thriller Hits Harder Than Ever, And It's Streaming Now
Image
Revenge is a dish best served cold in "Man on Fire," Tony Scott's excellent, violent thriller from 2004. The film is currently streaming on Netflix overseas, where audiences are seemingly keen to tune into the adventures of Denzel Washington's John W. Creasy. Creasy, we learn, is a damaged, miserable, unshaven former CIA agent and mercenary turned bodyguard. If that sounds like a demotion, it is — Creasy has a drinking problem that's pretty much destroyed his career. Now he can only find work guarding other people. He's also perpetually miserable and grumpy, unwilling to get close to anyone for any reason. His only friend is an old friend played with weird gusto by Christopher Walken.

Walken's character helps Creasy land a new job. This latest gig takes Creasy to Mexico, where he's tasked with guarding Pita (Dakota Fanning), a young girl who is the daughter of a wealthy Mexican businessman...

Gladiator 2: 10 Things You Need To Know About Ridley Scott’s Long-Awaited Sequel
Image
At the turn of the millennium, Gladiator revived Ridley Scott_. But despite constant rumours, he’s never returned to the world of his greatest hit… until now.

Here’s what you need to know.

1) It’s a Ridley Scott joint

Scott might have ceded the director’s chair for Blade Runner 2049 to Denis Villeneuve, but rather than delegate the Gladiator sequel, he’s kept it for himself. Production is set to get underway when he finishes his quiet, intimate drama (read: massive battle-tastic historical epic) Napoleon, which is currently in post-production.

It’s funny to see him taking on back-to-back sword-swinging behemoths – back in the early 2000s, Scott nearly turned down the offer from super-producer Dino De Laurentiis to direct Hannibal, because he thought it was about the Carthaginian general and his elephants, and couldn’t face climbing another Gladiator-sized mountain straight away.Apparently he has even more energy today,...

Denzel Washington Eyeing Ridley Scott Reunion With Gladiator 2 Role
Image
Over 15 years after previously working together, Denzel Washington and Ridley Scott are reportedly eyeing a reunion in Gladiator 2. Scott is finally getting back at the helm for the follow-up to his Best Picture-winning historical epic, something he has been developing for the better part of 20 years, largely struggling to find a story to bring back Russell Crowe's Maximus to life following his death in the original. Crowe will not be returning for Gladiator 2, with Normal People's Paul Mescal leading the cast.

Deadline has brought word that Washington is reportedly in final negotiations to reunite with Scott for Gladiator 2. The Oscar winner's role is being kept under wraps, though it would mark the first pairing of the director and star since 2007's American Gangster, which also starred original Gladiator actor Russell Crowe. However, it's currently expected that Crowe won't be returning for the historical epic sequel.

Denzel Washington in Talks to Join Ridley Scott’s ‘Gladiator’ Sequel
Image
Denzel Washington is in final negotiations to join Ridley Scott’s upcoming “Gladiator” sequel, reteaming after 2007’s “American Gangster.”

If the deal closes, the two-time Academy Award winner would join newly minted Oscar nominees Paul Mescal and Barry Keoghan, whose participation in the Paramount Pictures film broke Thursday.

Paramount has dated the film for November 22, 2024.

David Scarpa is penning the script for the sequel, which Scott will direct and produce with Michael Pruss via Scott Free, as well as Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher via Red Wagon Entertainment. Executive producers are Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald. Also returning from the original film are cinematographer John Mathieson, production designer Arthur Max and costume designer Janty Yates.

The sequel follows 2000’s blockbuster hit “Gladiator,” which was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and won five, including best picture. It earned $460 million at the box office. The film starred Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius,...

Everything Coming to Netflix in January 2023
Image
It goes the same every year; the holidays are a time for joy and renewal, and the new year is a time to throw it all away, recover emotionally, and ignore real life until February (at least). We’re talking peak winter, existential angst — the kind of things you can’t face down without a warm blanket and a weekend TV marathon.

The Netflix library gets lots of new film titles in January 2023, including the first five “Rocky” movies, “Top Gun,” and the triumphant return of “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” Though the TV pickings are slimmer, it’s the perfect time to catch up on breezy comfort offerings, like Japan’s charming “Old Enough!” in which toddlers run errands. The first season went viral with social media clips, and Season 2 drops January 1. Let these tiny little task rabbits be an inspiration for us all in the new year, to help our loved ones,...

Westworld (2016)
Here’s What’s New on HBO and HBO Max in June 2022
Westworld (2016)
This June on HBO and HBO Max will play host to a new season of “Westworld,” a new adaptation of “Father of the Bride” and much more.

The big new Warner Bros. release on HBO and HBO Max this month is “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,” which actually debuted on the HBO Max streaming service on May 30. The third film in the Wizarding World prequel franchise first hit theaters in April, and is now available to stream in 4K.

There’s also the updated version of “Father of the Bride” premiering on June 16, while a pair of noteworthy documentaries are coming on the early side this month: “The Janes” premieres June 8 and follows unlikely outlaws in pre-Roe v. Wade America who defied state legislation that banned abortion, while “Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain” debuts on June 9.

HBO Max New Releases: June 2022
Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Caleb McLaughlin, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Charlie Heaton, Noah Schnapp, and Gaten Matarazzo in Stranger Things (2016)
With its list of new releases for June 2022, HBO Max is joining in what should be a TV summer to remember.

Not content to let Netflix’s Stranger Things or Prime Video’s The Boys to dominate the summer TV landscape, HBO is coming through with a new season of one of its big hits. Westworld season 4 is set to premiere June 26 on both HBO and HBO Max. What will this season of the increasingly confusing sci-fi drama be about? Per HBO’s synopsis it will be “A dark odyssey about the fate of sentient life on earth.” So you know, only that.

Irma Vep is the only other Max Original of note this month. Based on a 1996 cult classic of the same name, this limited series stars Alicia Vikander as a disillusioned movie star looking to remake the early 20th century French silent film serial Les Vampires.

classic film virgin: Top Gun (1986)
Image
I figured I should probably watch 1986’s Top Gun before my press screening of its impending sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. Often it’s the case with classic films — I use the phrase loosely here — I’ve not seen that I’m embarrassed to admit that. I can’t say that’s true here, but I am mystified as to how I’ve managed to avoid this movie for almost 40 years. I’m not sure how I missed it when it was new. I mean! Summer of ’86, when this was released, I was 17 years old, and I was going to the movies a lot. It was the season of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Manhattan Project, Aliens, The Fly, and Stand by Me. All was geeky GenX glory. Maybe there were just too many movies. Strange to think that could be it, when there are so many more vying for our attention now.

Ramón Rodríguez Joins Aubrey Plaza in Hulu Drama Pilot ‘Olga Dies Dreaming’
Image
Ramón Rodríguez has been cast in a lead role opposite Aubrey Plaza in the Hulu drama pilot “Olga Dies Dreaming,” Variety has learned.

The show is based on the yet-to-be-released novel of the same name by Xóchitl Gonzalez. It was ordered to pilot at the streamer back in April. It tells the story of a Nuyorican brother(Rodríguez) and sister (Plaza) from a gentrifying Sunset Park, Brooklyn, reckoning with the absent, politically radical mother and their glittering careers among New York City’s elite in the wake of Hurricane Maria.

Rodríguez’s character is named Prieto. He is Olga’s brother and a popular Congressman who is described as wearing his Puerto Rican pride like a badge of honor. He grew up playing a part: the cheerful, overachieving, involuntary patriarch of a broken home. He’s lonely and tired, but he wakes up every morning wholly prepared to be the fixer,...

Tony Scott’s The Hunger Will Get Remake From Director Angela Robinson
Tony Scott was no stranger to remakes, having provided his take on 1974 classic The Taking of Pelham 123, and even considered updates on The Warriors and The Wild Bunch before he sadly took his own life in 2012. Now, with a sequel to his mega-hit Top Gun arriving later this year, his debut film The Hunger is also being revisited in the form of a remake.

Deadline reports that Angela Robinson (Professor Marston and the Wonder Women) will direct the project while Jessica Sharzer will be scripting. The 1983 original, led by Catherine Deneuve, David Bowie, and Susan Sarandon (with a brief appearance by Willem Dafoe in one of his very first roles) follows a love triangle between a couple that happens to be vampires and a doctor who is dedicated to sleep and aging research.

Based on the novel by Whitley Strieber, there’s no word yet on the approach for this remake,...

‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ Cinematographer on Chadwick Boseman: ‘I Cried as We Were Filming His Performance’
Chadwick Boseman
Six months after the unexpected death of Chadwick Boseman, the “Black Panther” actor has won multiple critics awards, a Golden Globe nomination and emerged as a shoo-in for an Oscar nomination for his great final performance as a sly, cocky trumpeter in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Audiences have been able to watch the film, co-starring Viola Davis in a ferocious performance as the title character, now available to stream on Netflix.

But the role was especially memorable for the first pair of eyes that actually viewed it.

Cinematographer Tobias Schliessler was on the Pittsburgh set during director George C. Wolfe’s 30-day shoot in the summer of 2019. In an interview with TheWrap, Schliessler talked about his experience capturing Boseman’s performance on camera for the August Wilson adaptation. And in a wide-ranging conversation, the cinematographer, who was born in Germany but makes his home in Los Angeles, revealed why his...

Working With Chadwick Boseman on ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ an ‘Incredible Experience,’ Dp Tobias Schliessler Says
Image
George C. Wolfe’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” features the final performance of “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman, who died Aug. 28. In the film, coming to Netflix on Dec. 18, he plays an ambitious jazz trumpeter, Levee, butting heads with Viola Davis’ titular blues singer in 1920s Chicago. Asked about his favorite shot from the film during EnergaCamerimage Film Festival’s online seminar, the film’s Dp Tobias Schliessler chose one featuring Boseman.

“One of the moments I will never forget was when Chadwick had this incredible emotional scene, talking about his mother getting raped,” he said. “I was looking at the monitors and I wanted to get just a little bit more light in his eyes, to show all the emotions. My operator was tightening in on him and everything just fell into place. It was an incredible experience, watching this actor.”

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” is an adaptation of a play by August Wilson,...
