Jìyuántái qihào

This really felt like a was watching a series of consecutively drawn pictures. It was beautiful. The film and story could have been better and was outright strange in certain places. But it did enough to keep me interested throughout.

The film is one of the most beautiful animated films I've ever seen, but that's the only thing that's good.

The plot is immensely dense and hard to follow, even to someone like me who understands Mandarin and Cantonese. There was no consistent protagonist, the narrator was intensely condescending, and the film delved into some strong issues without providing any closure.

A cinematic poem, digressive, fascinating, progressively captivating. A love letter to cinema, to melodramas, to the animation art, with also a bit of humour and grotesque, dreamlike sequence. A must-seen!

I went to watch this in the hopes of getting some nice insight into Hong Kong in 1967.

There is a lot of good drawings but as a movie it's a borefest. For some reason 80% of the time the characters are walking in a slowed down pace. Also there's way too many scenes that add nothing at all to the movie.. things like "should I put sugar in your coffee?".

This is the only movie where I almost fell asleep. It is just way too slow and it's hard to follow the story (if there is any). In the end of the movie (and after I've missed a lot of info from nearly falling asleep) there was no conclusion or anything. Pretty boring stuff.

This movie should be released as short in my opinion and the animation sped up - max 30mins. Now it drags up to 2 hours and just makes you fall asleep.

Yonfan is a master in storytelling, and this is a movie that needs a full immersion, is a slow burn, ipnotic and millimetric. It could have won the Golden Lion and it'd have been so deserved.
