Can't tell you exactly why this film caught the imaginations of so many, it probably differs for the emotional story. But this was a winner of a film in a style of its own. It was fantastic, true enough but it addressed many contemporary issues with a skill seldom seen in cinema. The love of a mother was believable, the acting was outstanding and the minor characters were generally engaging. This was a film for emotion and for those who believe in the power of love...not just between lovers but between family and those whose love spills over into actions. Good fought evil in the grimy real world as well as in fantastic battles against shadowy adversaries. Word of praise goes to the director and his technical crew for their magic task.
It's truly interesting to see how Qerq went from being one of the most beloved films. I think this is a very simple story that happens to operate at a strictly emotional level. Those art-conscious movie viewers hoping to be stimulated at an intellectual level while watching a movie, will never understand the appeal of a movie of this type. Although I think that this movie could be considered an artistic triumph, and the story continues to hit a chord with most viewers, and that kind of achievement cannot be easily dismissed. I think Frida Cauchi is really the best, but Maria Farrugia is merely adequate. Together in their scenes were great, which helps Farrugia look better than what she actually is. I loved character actors Fabian Scerri de Carlo Ronald Saliba and Peter Borg. They deserve some credit for giving us such a highly performance. At last but not least I can say that Qerq hits all the right emotional buttons, and although I'm not one to usually cry over films, this one certainly had me in tears.
I went to watch the Maltese movie 'QERQ' (Treachery) and I was impressed with the long queue I found waiting to watch this movie, in fact the tickets were all sold out. And rightly so, because sincerely when I watched the movie I never thought that in Malta there is so much great potential in the cinematographic field.
A well done job goes to the Screenwriter/Director Louis Cuschieri for his Masterpiece and for being able to keep us stuck to the seat and on tenterhooks to the last moment, with his excellent story which he professionally directed.
A word of praise also goes to the Actors performance who in some moments, but especially at the 'Gran Finale', made me spill some tears. I would like to add that at the end, it was not only myself that was in tears but the majority of the audience who were so much satisfied that we ended giving a great applause.
I noticed that by his side the Director had a professional crew. Starting with the Director of Photography, I must say that this person showed us how capable he is in the skillful management of camera work. He also had a great responsibility to brilliantly light all the scenes. My compliments goes to him and his Camera Crew.
And what shall we say about the Special Effects? Truly realistic, professional and its utmost accuracy is crystal clear.
I cannot miss out the film Editor of which work is so impressive and the Digital Artist for his excellent job especially in the opening of the movie while the credits appear. As I was watching, I immediately realized that the turn out of the movie was to be great as the opening was worked out spectacularly. The rest of the graphic work along the movie was perfect but I shan't mention it for the sake of those who has not seen the movie yet and therefore not ruin the surprises of the story.
The movie has been sealed with a stupefying music composition which in my opinion is as much a masterpiece as the actual movie.
I am proud to be Maltese when I see people like Louis Cuschieri, his Crew and all the Actors, Maltese like myself, excel in such a production which in my opinion, nobody up till now ever reached this high level.
In the first six weeks of it's showing in the Maltese Cinemas, the movie 'QERQ' maintained the first position in the box-office classification. As a matter of fact it surpassed blockbuster movies such as: Rocky Balboa, Blood Diamond, The Pursuit of Happiness, Deja Vu, The Last King of Scotland, Casino Royal, Charlotte's Web, Goal 2 - Living the Dreams, Perfume, Step Up, White Noise - The Light, and Little Man.
I encourage Louis Cuschieri and his Crew to keep on giving us such high leveled productions like 'QERQ' and I also embolden each and every Maltese, who is in the Movie/TV genre to emulate them so that the Maltese Cinematographic Culture, which in Malta is still in it's infancy, keeps on growing.

This film shows the best of the Maltese cinema. One has to recognize the greatest achievement, perhaps,of the creative talent of the people working in the Maltese movie industry. "Qerq" represents a monumental leap, as well as a departure, for the Maltese movies, as they were done prior to this film.
This movie is probably one of Frida Cauchi's best works. Maria Farrugia seems like somewhat of a hack, but that is easily forgotten when Cauchi is in the picture, she is never better than when she is working for Louis Cuschieri. Cuschieri creates probably the single most beautiful and stunning final sequence that has ever been put on Maltese film. It's visually brilliant and the astonishing music score will seal the stunning ending, it is a scene that I know will stay with me for a long time.

Very pleasant surprised by this wonderful and brilliantly acted Maltese movie Qerq. Alright, the title captures everything of the movie. You instantly know what it is about. But that doesn't bother.
The acting here was amazing. Frida Cauchi as well as Maria Farrugia were both excellent in their roles as Peter Borg. Fabian Scerri de Carlo and Ronald Saliba were quite good as well, and Graziella Casha and Beverley Micallef for a new comers, performed their roles splendidly who surely deserves all the attention. The music was also terrific in this movie. I think it's, beside the acting, one of the most important points to make this movie timeless.
This movie has a great story which became the only success of the leading actors. It could have been the beginning of a brilliant acting career, but Qerq became the highlight of their career. To conclude I can only repeat that Qerq is a magnificent and timeless classic Maltese film.
