Tyler Perry is asking, “Why did I get married again?”

To clarify, the movie mogul isn’t actually wed, but he’s finished the script for the long-awaited third movie in the “Why Did I Get Married?” franchise, which has been rumored to continue in recent years.

On Wednesday, Perry posted the cover page of the “table draft” version of the script for the movie, seemingly titled “Why Did I Get Married Again?” with the caption “I’m just gonna sit this right here!” He also conspicuously tagged the franchise’s main cast: Tasha Smith, Sharon Leal, Michael Jai White, Lamman Rucker, Jill Scott and Janet Jackson. Perry also stars as one of the eight college friends who wrestle with challenges in their marriage during their annual reunion.

Last year, veteran character actor Louis Gossett Jr, who got his acting start in Broadway productions back in 1950s (including Take a Giant Step and a 1959 production of A Raisin in the Sun where he shared the stage with Sidney Poitier), passed away at 87. Tyler Perry's multi-year deal with Netflix has been filled with hits. Most of his projects, like Six Triple Eight, the Madea series, and the drama Beauty in Black, have attracted interest, and his latest political drama is no exception.

She the People premiered on the streaming service on May 22. Netflix divided the series into two parts, with the follow-up part set to debut on Netflix on Aug. 14. Per Tudum, the show has been popular on the platform, but it will also be popular in court, as Netflix and Perry were sued for alleged intellectual property infringement.

For the week between May 19 and May 25, She the People debuted in eighth place. It received 2.7 million views and nine million hours viewed, enough to have the show enter the Top 10. The series debuted in the Top 10 in 11 countries, including the U.S., and became the number one show in two of them.

One Nickelodeon live-action series will not be returning next season. Per Deadline, Nickelodeon has chosen not to renew Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan for a sixth season. The series, starring Dylan Gilmer as an aspiring hip-hop artist, premiered in 2000 and ended its fifth season on April 30.

Nickelodeon released a statement on the cancellation of the family comedy show, which was created by Tyler Perry. The statement read, “After five incredible seasons of Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan, we are officially wrapping production. We’re deeply proud of the entire cast and crew as well as our amazing partners at Tyler Perry Studios, for the work they’ve created and the stories they’ve brought to life around this show.”

Starz has announced the movie and TV titles that will be available on the service in May. The Starz May 2025 schedule includes the season four finale of Power Book III: Raising Kanan, plus movies such as Flight Risk, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, and the American Pie franchise.

A blockbuster-worthy lineup of fan-favorite films will also be available. Highlights include the high-octane thriller Deja Vu, starring Denzel Washington; the suspenseful drama The Call, starring Halle Berry and Morris Chestnut; the empowering revenge drama Enough, starring Jennifer Lopez; and the epic adventure flick King Kong, starring Naomi Watts, Adrien Brody, and Jack Black.

In season three of “Raising Kanan,” Kanan Stark finally stopped living in the shadow of his mother and assumed control of his life, taking matters into his own hands by orchestrating the deaths of Ronnie and Detective Howard.

Fans were happy to learn that Tyler Perry's Beauty in Black was renewed for a second season back in March, and now they have even more to be excited about. The multi-talented filmmaker is bringing a brand-new series to Netflix this May, and this time, he’s switching gears with his first comedy for the streamer.

Titled She The People, this marks the second show that Perry is working on as part of his ongoing agreement with Netflix. Under this deal, Perry has committed to creating content for the platform, including writing, producing, and directing a variety of movies, TV series, and faith-based projects.

While Perry writes, directs, and produces this new comedy series, Niya Palmer is also a co-creator of the show. She executive produces alongside Keisha Lance Bottoms and Terri J. Vaughn. In addition, Angi Bones and Tony L. Strickland produce for Tyler Perry Studios.

But Vaughn isn't just behind the scenes.

Following the success of Beauty of Black, Tyler Perry's next series lands its official release date on Netflix. The next Perry show on Netflix takes a political turn as the award-winning filmmaker unveils his new comedy, She the People.

Netflix confirmed on its official website that, like Beauty in Black, the first season Perry's She the People will feature 16 episodes broken up into two batches. Part 1 of She the People premieres via the streaming service on May 22, while Part 2 debuts on Aug. 14. Netflix also released new images from the politically-charged comedy starring Terri J. Vaughn, who previously worked with Perry on Daddy's Little Girls and Meet the Browns.

She the People chronicles Vaughn's central character, Antoinette Dunkerson, who successfully wins her campaign for Lieutenant Governor. However, her newfound political status proves to be more than Antoinette bargained for, as she must figure out how to succeed while reporting...

Cissy Houston, the two-time Grammy-wining gospel singer, mother of the late Whitney Houston and backup singer for acts ranging from Elvis Presley and Aretha Franklin to Jimi Hendrix, Paul Simon and Luther Vandross, died today of Alzheimer’s disease complications at her home in New Jersey. She was 91.

Her death was announced by her family.

“In our time of deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Emily ‘Cissy’ Houston, who transitioned today, Monday, October 7, at 10:30 a.m. Et, at her home in Newark, New Jersey, while under hospice care for Alzheimer’s disease,” said the family statement, obtained by Deadline.

Houston was born Emily Drinkard on September 30, 1933, in Newark. The youngest of eight children, she launched her singing career in 1938 when she joined her sister Anne and brothers Larry and Nicky to form the gospel group The Drinkard Four.

When Kevin Daniels got a call from his agent’s mom that she’d pitched him for the lead role in a film she was producing, it didn’t take much for him to say “yes.”

“We had a zoom meeting and we kind of laughed and told some jokes and they were like, ‘Hey, you want to come down to Savannah?’ and I was like, ‘I like Savannah. That sounds nice,’” Daniels tells The Hollywood Reporter.

The film was Not Another Church Movie, a spoof comedy of Tyler Perry’s Madea series, written, directed and produced by Johnny Mack (Real Husbands of Hollywood), which is set to hit theaters on May 10. In it, Daniels, stars as the hardworking Taylor Pherry, a man given a mission directly from God (Jamie Foxx) to write a story about his dysfunctional family to save billionaire talk show host Hoprah Windfall’s plummeting TV ratings.

The highly anticipated “Sonic the Hedgehog” TV series spinoff, “Knuckles,” is here and it includes a smashingly great cast that’s ready to hit you with your favorite Sega characters.

The six-episode live-action series made its premiere on Friday, April 26. According to Paramount+, the series “follows Knuckles (Idris Elba) on a hilarious and action-packed journey of self-discovery as he agrees to train Wade (Adam Pally) as his protégé and teach him the ways of the Echidna warrior.” The show takes place between the films “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” and was made by many of the same people involved in the films.

The series was created for television by John Whittington and Toby Ascher, who also serve as showrunners during production.

The 19.99 “Plane” (Lionsgate) and “M3GAN” (Universal) lead the VOD charts, followed by Christmas titles “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” (Universal/24.99) and “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody” (Sony/19.99). With studios recouping 14 or more from each transaction, that’s a bonanza — especially with three of those films still in the box office top 10. Synergy at last!

“Plane” is #1 on iTunes and Vudu, #2 on Google Play, with the order reversed for “M3GAN.” “Puss” is #3 on Google Play, fourth on the others. “Whitney,” new this week, is #3 on Vudu and #7 on iTunes. It has yet to chart at Google Play (which often lags), but perhaps it isn’t helped by the site listing it as a “documentary.” “Triangle of Sadness” (Neon/6.99) took the #3 spot at iTunes.

Perfect Match, The Woman King and Outer Banks: Season 3 are some of the much-anticipated projects hitting Netflix this month.

New dating show Perfect Match features alums from Netflix’s unscripted series looking for love and competing against their fellow singles in a tropical paradise. In the Nick Lachey-hosted series, contestants will pair up to form potential matches with the most compatible couples able to play matchmaker, breaking up couples and connecting them with new singles. The first season will start streaming on Valentine’s Day, with new episodes dropping each week.

Shortly after Valentine’s Day, Netflix will air two projects celebrating African royalty.

The Jada Pinkett Smith-executive-produced and -narrated docuseries African Queens: Njinga, dropping Feb. 15, explores the life of the 17th century warrior leader of Ndongo and Matamba, in modern-day Angola.

February is for lovers. But with its list of new releases for February 2023, Netflix is unveiling another season of arguably its least romantic show.

That’s right: Joe is returning in You season 4 part 1 on Feb. 9. This time around our central stalker played by Penn Badgley is across the pond in jolly old England, living an unassuming life as a bearded professor and looking for his next target. If you don’t get your fill of You this month, stay tuned for the second part of season 4 in March.

You will be joined in February by a third season of another buzzy Netflix original. The kids of Outer Banks return on Feb. 23 to find their literal and metaphorical treasure once and for all. Other originals this month include rich dog docuseries Gunther’s Millions on Feb. 1 and animated family title My Dad the Bounty Hunter on Feb. 9.

Highlights in the new category include Season 2 of “Pen15,” which stars Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle as their middle school selves, out Sept. 18. Another highlight is the series premiere of “Woke,” inspired by the life and work of American cartoonist Keith Knight. That’s out Sept. 9.

We’re still a couple of weeks out from The Boys returning with its second season, but based on the footage we’ve seen so far, it certainly looks as if we’re in for another wild ride. One that may even top the first run of the show, which was one of the best things that we’d seen on television in a long time.

Of course, trying to predict how something as crazy as The Boys is going to end up is a fool’s errand, but let’s not forget that it won’t be the only new thing arriving on Amazon Prime in September. Far from it, in fact.

An election season is fast-approaching in the U.S. So for its new releases in September 2020, Amazon Prime is bringing back one of its most political shows.

The Boys season 2 premieres its first three episodes on September 4. Though the show on its face is a superhero story, viewers of season 1 will know it’s really about America’s troubling embrace of entertainment with fascism. Sounds fun and not at all terrifying right before a presidential election!

That’s not the only bleak Amazon original on the schedule for September. British TV adaptation Utopia arrives on September 25. This Gillian Flynn-produced series follows fans of a comic book who believe it predicts…world-ending pandemics. Darn it. Amazon’s only original film this month is a…documentary about voter suppression from Liz Garbus called All In: The Fight for Democracy. Yikes.

With the streaming wars really starting to heat up now thanks to all the new services that have sprung up over the past few months, it’s more important than ever for the major players to continue delivering truckloads of new content to keep subscribers happy. Exclusive: The content team of IMDb TV, Amazon’s free, ad-supported streaming service, is moving under the Amazon Studios umbrella.

Amazon Studios’ Ryan Pirozzi and Lauren Anderson have been named IMDb TV co-heads of content. The two will oversee all programming for IMDb TV, including development, production, licensing and strategy, working closely with Amazon Studios co-heads of television Vernon Sanders and Albert Cheng. The IMDb TV business, product and development teams remain in Seattle reporting to VP of IMDb TV, Mark Eamer.

Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke and Eamer announced the restructuring in an internal memo. (you can read it at the bottom of the story).

The move comes a year after IMDb TV’s January 2019 launch (as Freedive). It also comes as the platform, which started as a destination for TV and film library titles, is starting to venture into original programming with acquisitions like Corner Gas.

For those expecting a wacky Tyler Perry comedy, you won't find that here, with the director taking a turn into thriller territory with this tale of marital strife that is much, much darker than the filmmaker's Madea comedies, but it remains to be seen how audiences will react to this type of movie from the acclaimed director.

I've been waiting and debating for oh-so-long for a comedy show that is actually funny; and when I say funny I mean leg-slapping, foot-stomping, my-head-is-hurting funny! Instead, first place went to DreamWorks Animation's Mr. Peabody & Sherman.In its second weekend, Mr. Peabody fell 32 percent to $21.8 million. That's a better hold than last March's The Croods (39 percent), and also a slight improvement over How to Train Your Dragon (34 percent). To date, Mr. Peabody has earned $63.8 million; with good word-of-mouth and a lack of competition, it should reach $100 million by the end of the month.300: Rise of an Empire plummeted 57 percent to $19.2 million. In comparison, the first 300 dropped 54 percent in its second outing. Atlanta -- Even though Gabrielle Union lost the lead role of ABC series "Scandal" to Kerry Washington, she says the experience gave her hope that strong and likable female characters can be created for black actresses.

"I said to myself, `Oh my God, these roles are out there,'" Union recalled in a recent interview. "It showed me that you don't have to settle. Luckily, the success of her and the show bred more work. Just from the audition process, I knew that I couldn't go backward."

Now, Union is ready to move forward and make her mark. She will star in the dramatic movie "Being Mary Jane," which premieres Tuesday night on Bet. The movie will become a series, expected to air in January.

Thanks to a vibrant marketing effort and a complete lack of competition for female audiences, The Great Gatsby opened to an excellent $50.1 million over Mother's Day weekend. However, that wasn't enough to claim first place from Iron Man 3, which followed up its record-breaking debut with another very strong outing. Even with this impressive one-two punch, overall box office was still down a bit from the same weekend last year when The Avengers scored a second weekend record with over $103 million. Iron Man 3 fell 58 percent to $72.5 million, which is the fourth-highest second weekend ever behind The Avengers, Avatar and The Dark Knight. The decline is much steeper than that of The Avengers (50 percent), but is about even with Iron Man 2 (59 percent). To date, Iron Man 3 has earned an excellent $284.95 million, and if it continues to follow Iron Man 2's pace it will ultimately wind up over $400 million.

On paper, "Tyler Perry Presents Peeples" should have done decent business this weekend. Even though he didn't write or direct it, the meet-the-parents comedy had Perry's name on it as producer and promoter. It features two popular TV stars, Craig Robinson and Kerry Washington, in the leads. It's a movie that caters to older women and comedy fans at a time of year (summer superhero season) when both are underserved. It opened on Mother's Day weekend, a good time to catch the family business that Perry targets so effectively. Most of all, as a movie with an all-African-American cast, it seemed like smart counterprogramming to "The Great Gatsby," a movie about white people throwing parties. Perry movies typically open at around $20 million. Pundits predicted "Peeples" would earn at least half that. Instead, it debuted in fourth place, with a meager $4.9 million in estimated sales. Kerry Washington and Craig Robinson star in the upcoming film "Peeples," a new comedy from producer Tyler Perry.

Written and directed by Tina Gordon Chism ("Drumline"), "Tyler Perry Presents Peeples" focuses on the Peeples, a well-off East Coast family celebrating a reunion weekend in the Hamptons. The idyllic retreat is interrupted when Wade (Craig Robinson) shows up looking to propose to Grace (Kerry Washington). Perry, the acclaimed writer, director, producer and star, is presenting the film.

Paranormal Activity 4 took first place at the box office this weekend, though its comparatively underwhelming gross suggests audiences are growing tired of the perennial horror franchise. Alex Cross also missed the mark, though overall box office was still up around 10 percent thanks to impressive holdover business from Argo and Hotel Transylvania. The fourth installment in the Paranormal Activity scared up $29 million from 3,412 locations this weekend. For any other low-budget horror movie, this would be a fantastic start, but this franchise has established a track record, and with that track record comes expectations. On this same weekend last year, Paranormal Activity 3 set an October opening record with $52.6 million, while Paranormal Activity 2 debuted to $40.7 million the year before.
