Competition

Josh runs into two bounty hunters who want him to join forces with them. But Josh refuses since their professional ethics leaves much to be desired. Besides Randall has his eye on a comely saloon owner whose business is suffering because the town doesn't like bounty hunters. Trouble is Josh can't trust the two now that he's rejected their offer.

Slender episode, at best. Josh's ploy is supposed to be clever, but isn't very persuasive, plus all the action takes place in a hokey sound stage town. So add poor production values to a thin script, and you've got a lesser series entry. Good thing the series had a winning personality like the early McQueen to carry them over rough spots like this.

Randall enters a town for a little relaxation and vacation but soon afterward, two bad bounty hunters come in with a dead man they shot for a $500 reward. While waiting for their money, which they are told could take up to 10 days, they decide to hang around since they figure Randall must be waiting for some wanted man to come into town. (Greedy people think that way.) To get Randall's potential (they think) money, they offer to be partners but Josh turns them down. They stalk him all over town, even while he is trying to make time with a pretty woman ("Helen Martin," played by Pat Crowley). Randall takes offense to that and beats up one of the stalkers.

Since bounty hunters are thought of as pariahs in this town, Miss Martin, who co-owns a fancy restaurant in town, doesn't want to be seen with Josh after she finds out he, too, is a bounty hunter.

However, it quickly becomes apparent to her, the sheriff and everyone else that the town would be better off without those two bad bounty-men, so Josh, with the aid of "woman" who has artistic talents, devises a plan to set the two hunters against each other.

In all, a "fair" episode, elevated in my rating by Crowley who wasn't just a pretty face but a good actress. She's been a television actress since the '50s and is still going strong at the age of 77.
