Many of the show's familiar elements return in this episode: strange but inhabitable planet, just two highly advanced very serene and pensive aliens, visions and thought control, and a bit of crude mysticism. This one also adds lots of action, explosions and gun battles, which are fun.
It works well if you take action parts for what they are and don't try to analyse the overall premise too much.

Going from the action packed first act to Helena stuck in a Plexiglas box, and Koenig lost in space in a spacesuit, performing a soliloquy... it's really insane, but trying very hard to be intellectual.
For a TV show, it succeeds pretty well in episodes like this. And they were aiming very high for tv.
Unfortunately for the show, the high intelligence audience for this show also saw the shockingly ridiculous physics. Most of the time, the physics made Star Trek and even Lost in Space look far more plausible.
Still, this show was certainly made for its time: an audience of highly intelligent 1970s psychedelic users. But there simply weren't enough of them (at least, into this) to make it work.
Very touching speech by Victor here.
Barbara Bain's scream in this episode is extremely embarrassingly bad.

Amazing action and special effects. Unforgettable aliens. Thought provoking concept. This episode is one of the best of the series, along with DRAGON'S DOMAIN and FORCE OF LIFE.
If you are going to watch War Games then just don't think and go for it. The reason is very simple. It all starts with earthships attacking the moonbase. And this time it's for real, almost all eagles are destroyed as is the moonbase itself.
Towards the end of the episode it's all explained that things didn't really happen but nevertheless, there are always eagles available, strange isn't it.
Once Koenig and crew is on the attacking planet this episode turns into a bit of blah blah, a thing we have seen before in this franchise. But it's also the first time that Koenig goes berserk. Normally he stays calm and do solve problems with other worlds but this time it's him who iis destroying stuff.
Nothing special here and not that much of effects.

- WissenswertesThe reason the aliens rarely face one another is that the guest actors kept breaking up looking at each other's head-pieces.
- PatzerThe model for the Mark IX Hawk has a small blinking light on the ventral side (the "chin" of the command module). These are used to sync laser SFX in post-production. Unlike the Eagle's lasers, no "beam effect" was added in post-production for the Hawks firing their weapon.

[last lines]
Cmdr. John Koenig: I'd almost forgotten.
Prof. Victor Bergman: Forgotten what?
Cmdr. John Koenig: I can't remember.
Dr. Helena Russell: I remember. A world without fear. It was very strange... but beautiful. We've lost it.
