'Extremo Sul' reaches human extremes

I approached the film expecting a journey to escalate mount Sarmiento. Well, there was little climbing but I got so much more!

The film is about facing one's limits. You don't choose the mountain, the mountain chooses you. If you are not ready, something inside you will let you know, no matter whether there is a film crew waiting or five years were spent on planning and funding the endeavor. There comes a time when games are over. One looks at the 'mountain' and stops acting. It's the ultimate human experience: to get to know yourself.

Photography is amazing: most of the images were captured on 35 mm film. Some shots were filmed with a digital camera. Usually they were the personal testimony of Barreta, the organizer of the expedition: it was his 'video journal'. Some other digital shots were from a 1995 expedition that managed to get to the top.

The real movie was not the climbing adventure but the very process of filming a crew of alpinists facing their fears. At this, the movie excels. It's a great view for those who love the sport and film making. It's a necessary view for everyone.
