Marc Maron Blasts Netflix Over Chappelle as Pod Interview Sparks Industry Debate
Marc Maron
Marc Maron used a new interview to accuse Netflix of choosing profit over principle in its handling of comedian Dave Chappelle’s trans-related material, saying the streamer proved “fascism is good for business.” Speaking on the Aug. 24 episode of Pod Save America, Maron argued that when protests didn’t dent the bottom line, the company signaled which side it prioritized. He added that platforms will “co-opt anybody” who feeds their algorithms.

Maron contrasted Netflix’s defense of Chappelle with the service’s broader library, saying volume does not outweigh what gets amplified and repeatedly promoted. In the 2021 controversy, Netflix leadership declined to remove The Closer and later acknowledged internal memos...

Marc Maron Takes Aim at Netflix, Bill Maher, Dave Chappelle: ‘Fascism Is Good for Business’
Image
Marc Maron doesn’t believe business should come before morals. It’s exactly why he severed ties with Bill Maher and finds the consistent platforming of controversial comedians on platforms like Netflix to be considerably dangerous, he said on Pod Save America, per Variety.

“I always had a problem with his tone,” Maron said about Maher, “and it happens with some of the other boomers, there’s this desperate chasing of relevance that changes someone’s mind in terms of how they approach what they do and also kind of...

Dave Chappelle Screens Unreleased Documentary ‘Live in Real Life,’ About His Covid Comedy Shows, to Raise Money for His High School Alma Mater
Image
In the summer of 2020, several unrelenting months into the Covid pandemic, comedian Dave Chappelle decided he had to do something to bring his community back to life. Like the rest of the world, Chappelle was sequestered at home with his family, so he decided to use his resources to make a change. After renting out a cornfield down the street from his home in Yellow Springs, Ohio, Chappelle began hosting socially distanced concerts with his friends, musicians and fellow comedians. He filmed the entire process for the independent documentary, “Dave Chappelle: Live In Real Life.”

The film, directed by Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2021, under its original title, “Dave Chappelle: This Time, This Place.” However, it failed to gain distribution after the backlash to his 2021 stand-up special, “The Closer,” in which he told a series of transphobic jokes. Now, four years later, the...

Dave Chappelle Shouts Out David Letterman During Screening of His Unreleased Doc
Image
Comedy fans, including David Letterman, got a rare look at the unreleased documentary Dave Chappelle: Live in Real Life at the 23rd annual Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival on Aug. 8. The screening of the film, which chronicled the comic’s beloved cornfield comedy shows during the pandemic, was followed by an even rarer audience talkback. Initially titled Dave Chappelle: This Time This Place, the doc originally premiered at a packed Radio City Music Hall in 2021 during the first live Tribeca Festival since the Covid-19 lockdown. Fallout over trans jokes from his controversial Netflix special The Closer reportedly derailed distribution. In response, Chappelle did a special tour featuring both the doc and a comedy show. The documentary remains unavailable to the general public.

Chapelle’s appearance was part of his philanthropic effort to raise money for his D.C. high school, the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, the latest...

Image
The San Quentin Film Festival — which, last year, became the first-ever film festival held inside of a prison — has set the industry jury for its second annual event, including Vanessa Williams, Esai Morales, Jesse Williams, Celine Song and more.

These jurors will judge narrative and documentary short films from currently and formerly incarcerated filmmakers as well the pitch competitions for best screenplay and best documentary from currently incarcerated writers.

This year’s jury also features two formerly incarcerated people: actor and writer Clarence “Divine Eye” Maclin, who starred in 2024’s “Sing Sing,” as well as actor, author and poet Richard Cabral, best known for “Mayans M.C.” and “American Crime.”

Other notable jurors include Kyra Sedgwick and Claudia Weill. Last year’s industry jury included Jeffrey Wright, Billy Crudup, Mary-Louise Parker and more.

Separately during the festival, a jury of people who are currently incarcerated at the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center...

Malcolm-Jamal Warner Drowns: ‘The Cosby Show’ & ‘The Resident’ Actor Was 54
Image
Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who rose to fame as the son on 1980s megahit The Cosby Show and had a prolific acting career that included series-regular slots on The Resident and Malcom & Eddie and was a Grammy-winning recording artist, died Sunday in a drowning accident while on a family vacation in Costa Rica. He was 54.

Costa Rican National Police told ABC News that Warner’s official cause of death was asphyxia. Police said he died near Cocles, a beach in Limon province, after being caught by a high current. He was found Sunday afternoon.

The Associated Press reported that the local police initially reported that Warner “was rescued by people on the beach.” But first responders from Costa Rica’s Red Cross found him without vital signs, and he was taken to the morgue.

‘Ballard’ Review: Maggie Q Brings Heart and Grit to Excellent ‘Bosch’ Spinoff
Image
Detective Renée Ballard (Maggie Q) first showed up on screen in the series finale of “Bosch: Legacy,” where she and Harry F—king Bosch (Titus Welliver) reluctantly worked on a case together. But even if you’ve not seen an episode of “Bosch,” you’ll get oriented to “Ballard” right quick. It’s one of the great TV procedurals in recent years, a feat of plotting, character, performance, and using the medium to poke at a society that breeds it.

Q’s detective is working in a literal and figurative basement in the hierarchy of the LAPD, trying to crack the coldest of cases after an accusation of misconduct rankled the wrong feathers up the chain of command. With an island of misfit toys — that is to say, volunteer law enforcement that are retired, reserve or just civilians — Ballard does her diligence to ensure justice for the people whose cases have long been forgotten,...

‘Chicago Fire’ Knocked off Streaming Spot by Underrated 98% Rotten Tomatoes Sci-Fi Series
Image
The aliens have landed, and they’ve burned through Chicago Fire’s long-held streaming stronghold. Resident Alien, the quirky sci-fi dramedy led by genre chameleon Alan Tudyk, has officially dethroned NBC’s Chicago Fire to take the No. 7 spot on Peacock’s Top 10 TV shows. Not only has the SyFy/USA crossover hit surged in popularity following its Season 4 premiere on June 6, but it's now poised to knock Chicago P.D. out of the No. 6 position, continuing what might be a full-on extraterrestrial takeover of the streamer’s algorithm.

Powered by a nearly spotless 98% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, Resident Alien has proven it’s far more than a niche sci-fi sideshow. With its biting humor, the series has grown from fan-favorite to legitimate streaming contender, and Tudyk is, unsurprisingly, at the center of it all. With a resume reading like a Comic-Con greatest hits list, Tudyk brings his signature...

Image
Crime series “Sherlock & Daughter” has reported a strong streaming debut last week on Max, reaching the number four spot on its in-app top 10, while also scoring season-best ratings on its U.S. network home, the CW.

A success critically and in terms of ratings in both the U.S. and Australia, where it airs on Sbs, “Sherlock & Daughter” has received a nomination for a Golden Nymph Award for best global fiction series at the upcoming Monte-Carlo Television Festival.

The new spin on the Arthur Conan Doyle detective premiered on the CW Network on April 16 and, in its most recent week, achieved its highest ratings of the season, growing almost 20% since its premiere. The series is currently the CW Network’s number one scripted series on linear and number two series on digital.

On Sbs in Australia, the show has seen an average 150% increase in total audience for the...

While soap operas on a given network, like CBS and ABC, have had characters and stories cross over from time to time, inter-network crossovers are rare. Dave Chappelle Joins Mo Amer for Rare Interview on Political Comedy, Fiery ‘SNL’ Monologues and Crying Over Netflix’s ‘Mo’: ‘I’m Not Doing This S—‘ If the ‘Show Sucked’
Image
Dave Chappelle and Mo Amer became close during the pandemic, when Chappelle managed to secure a Covid testing machine and created a bubble at his Ohio home to bring in comedians to perform. Amer was one of them. “We spent all the summer of 2020 together doing shows,” Chappelle says. “The best comedians in the world flew into Ohio, and we had a blast.”

Those early comedy shows were held in a cornfield, while the comedians were tested every day. But beyond that, Amer was mostly holed up in his Airbnb as he started writing Season 1 of “Mo,” his critically acclaimed Netflix series, which wrapped this year after two seasons.

“It was so nerve-racking because everything was so unsettling,” Amer recalls. “It was Covid; it was civil unrest; it was my own personal stuff. And every one of my writers was juggling things emotionally. It was really overwhelming. But you really saved my life.

Despite being outnumbered fifty-to-one by the Five Families of the Italian Mafia, the Westies’ legendary brutality and cunning have given them the leverage necessary to share the spoils through a fragile détente. Laura Linney set to take the stage with Kevin Kline & Jon Tenney for the MGM+ comedy series American Classic
Image
Kevin Kline and Jon Tenney need to make room on the stage for Laura Linney as she joins the cast of MGM+’s upcoming eight-episode series American Classic. Michael Hoffman and Bob Martin (The Prom, Slings and Arrows) co-created American Classic, with Hoffman directing the series focusing on a narcissistic Broadway star looking to bring his old stomping grounds back to form.

Here’s an official description of American Classic courtesy of MGM+:

“American Classic centers on Broadway star and notorious narcissist Richard Bean, played by Kline, who suffers a spectacular public meltdown and returns to his hometown and the family-run theater where he first became aware of his own brilliance. When he arrives, he is shocked to discover that his father, the former artistic director, has lost a step and that the once-respected theater, now run by his brother Jon (Tenney), played by Tenney, and his wife Kristen (Linney), has become,...

Ted Sarandos Defends Giving Netflix Comedy Specials to Dave Chappelle and Tony Hinchcliffe: ‘You Can’t Say That’s Not Funny’
Image
Netflix head Ted Sarandos is once again sticking to his guns when it comes to the streamer’s comedy specials. During a conversation Friday at a Paley Media Council event in New York that TheWrap attended, the CEO defended giving comedy specials to both Dave Chappelle and Tony Hinchcliffe.

After the release of Chappelle’s 2021 special “The Closer,” the comedian came under fire for his jokes about the transgender community. Sarandos admitted that whether or not to stick by an artist are “never easy calls” and said that the decision to back Chappelle came down to “protecting free speech and free expression.”

“I knew that the art form itself always needed a safe place to try things out. Comedians define the culture in a bunch of ways, and they do that by figuring out where the lines are and the joke is,” the Netflix head explained during Friday’s “Beyond...

Netflix’s Ted Sarandos Says Trump Didn’t Pitch Him on Melania Documentary, Continues to Defend Dave Chappelle
Image
Ted Sarandos, co-ceo of Netflix, met with Donald Trump in December at the then-President-elect’s Mar-a-Lago compound in Florida. But according to Sarandos, the two didn’t “talk shop.”

The Netflix boss, speaking Friday at the Paley Media Council event “Beyond the Stream: A Conversation with Ted Sarandos” in New York City, said it was the first time he met Trump. “We had a nice long dinner together,” he said.

Asked by interviewer Ben Smith, editor in chief of Semafor, whether Trump tried to sell Sarandos on the documentary featuring his third wife, Melania — the rights to which were acquired by Amazon — Sarandos said, no, Trump did not. Is Trump a fan of Netflix? “He said Melania and [son] Barron were big fans,” Sarandos said.

Meanwhile, Smith continued, did Amazon “overpay” for the Melania doc? (Amazon is reportedly shelling out $40 million for the film and docu-series about the First Lady.) Sarandos said he didn’t know.

Netflix’s Ted Sarandos on Dave Chappelle, Massive First-Look Deals and Dinner With Trump
Image
Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos said his decision to stand by Dave Chappelle and his Netflix special, The Closer, after backlash about what was seen as transphobic jokes was not an easy choice, but one that he continues to stand by.

“They’re never easy calls. But I think it’s rooted in a principle of protecting free speech and expression,” Sarandos said.

Speaking at an event at the Paley Center For Media, where Sarandos was interviewed by Semafor editor-in-chief Ben Smith, Sarandos was asked whether there are certain lines he would not cross for standup specials on the show, including the decision to order three comedy specials from Tony Hinchcliffe, after the comedian made derogatory remarks about Puerto Rico and at rally for Donald Trump.

“The cost of entry is you do have to be funny for enough people, so there’s a bit of a juice worth the squeeze argument,...

“Censoring a comedian didn’t feel right”: Netflix Boss Still Stands By Dave Chappelle Despite Transgender Controversy
Image
Netflix is no stranger to controversy. Being as big of a company as it is, many original shows have had questionable moments that have been pinned on the company. At the same time, the company seems to have quite a complicated relationship with the LGBTQ+ community.

Dave Chappelle in his latest appearance on Saturday Night Live | Credits: NBC

While it has gained a reputation for being diverse, not only in its content but also in its employees, a number of shows and films have ended up countering its outward belief. The best example of this would be the controversy that Dave Chappelle found himself in a few years ago.

The CEO of the company, Ted Sarandos, had quite an interesting response to the situation when it first happened, and times have not changed his opinion on the matter.

The queer community does not like Dave Chappelle

NAACP Image Awards: Dave Chappelle, the Wayans Family Named Special Honorees
Image
Updated: The Wayans Family will be inducted into the NAACP Hall of Fame at the 56th NAACP Image Awards ceremony on Feb. 22.

The Wayanses — namely Keenen Ivory Wayans, Damon Wayans Sr., Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Kim Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr. — join previous inductees including New Edition, Eddie Murphy, Oprah Winfrey, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Spike Lee and Earth Wind and Fire.

The Hall of Fame Award is presented to “individuals or groups who have been pioneers in their respective fields and whose influence continues to shape their industry for generation.” And as one of the most influential families in comedy and entertainment — collectively behind such culture-defining hits as “In Living Color,” “My Wife and Kids,” “Hollywood Shuffle,” the “Scary Movie” franchise, “White Chicks” and the hit CBS sitcom “Poppa’s House” — they certainly fit the bill.

Parks & Rec Features a Hilarious Career Trend for 1 of the Show's Most Underrated Stars
Image
A lot of fans might recognize actor Jay Jackson as the iconic and hilarious newscaster Perd Hapley on the hit comedy series Parks & Recreation. His first appearance actually came later in the series in season two, episode four, "Practice Date." He doesn't play a significant role in the episode from a story standpoint, but fans quickly became more and more enamored by the newscaster as he got more and more story. Perd Hapley would appear as his goofy, rich-voiced self in 31 episodes throughout the rest of the show's run. Jackson would become mostly known for the character. After watching the show, many fans were happy to know that Jackson has appeared in plenty of other shows and movies as well, but interestingly enough, a majority of those roles have been as a newscaster.

Being typecast in Hollywood is rarely a good thing, as it can unintentionally define an actor for their entire career.

Dave Chappelle Wins Third Comedy Album Grammy in a Row
Image
Dave Chappelle won best comedy album at the 2025 Grammys on Sunday, his third win in a row in the category and sixth win overall.

The Recording Academy presented the comedy album trophy during the premiere ceremony, which took place before the televised event later on Sunday. Chappelle was not present to accept the trophy.

Chappelle won for The Dreamer, his 2023 New Year’s Eve Netflix special. The new hour was Chappelle’s seventh for the streamer, and his first since the ultra-controversial 2021 special The Closer, which brought the comedian under fire for jokes about the transgender community.

In The Dreamer, Chappelle still targeted several different marginalized groups, including trans people and the disabled. “I love punching down!” he said at one point in the special.

Chappelle’s win beat Ricky Gervais’ Armageddon, Jim Gaffigan’s The Prisoner, Nikki Glaser’s Someday You’ll Die and Trevor Noah’s Where Was I.

Dave Chappelle wins sixth Best Comedy Album Grammy, remains undefeated in category despite continued controversy
Image
Dave Chappelle has been nominated six times for Best Comedy Album at the Grammys and now has won six times, continuing his undefeated streak in the category with his Feb. 2 victory for The Dreamer. He now stands alone as the Grammys’ second-most-awarded comedian, breaking his tie with George Carlin and Richard Pryor and just one trophy shy of seven-time champ Bill Cosby. His previous five victories were for The Age of Spin and Deep in the Heart of Texas (2018), Equanimity and The Bird Revelation (2019), Sticks and Stones (2020), The Closer (2023), and What’s in a Name? (2024).

This year Chappelle defeated first-time nominees Ricky Gervais (Armageddon) and Nikki Glaser (Someday You’ll Die), three-time nominee and fifth-year Grammy host Trevor Noah (Where Was I?), and eight-time nominee Jim Gaffigan (The Prisoner). All four are awaiting their first Grammy.

Chappelle is clearly still loved by his peers in the industry, undiminished since his satirical...

Kevin Kline Returns to Comedy with 'American Classic'
Image
The voice of Kevin Kline has been pleasantly popping up from time to time on the animated comedy show Bob's Burgers for nearly 15 years. His distinct (and distinguished) voice is perfect for his rich and elitist landlord character, Mr. Fischoeder, and he always brings a chuckle. But in the live-action scene, Kline has mostly been a dramatic force, especially in the recent series, Disclaimer. Of course, the Oscar winner has given great dramatic performances ever since 1982's Sophie's Choice, but it's always a treat when he busts his comedy chops in live-action. On that note, MGM+ announced today an eight-episode series order for American Classic, a half-hour comedy series starring none other than Kevin Kline.

American Classic comes from co-creators Michael Hoffman and Bob Martin. The series, which will debut with eight episodes, comes from Fifth Season as the studio with Mar-Key Pictures, Likely Story, and Anonymous Content producing. Kevin...

MGM+ orders the American Classic comedy series starring Kevin Kline as a narcissistic Broadway star returning to his hometown stage

William Shakespeare once said, “All the world’s a stage,” but for Kevin Kline, the stage is a way of life, and his love for theater is vast. American Classic stars Kevin Sline as Richard Bean and Jon Tenney as Jon Bean. Hoffman directs the series, with production kicking into high gear later this year in New Jersey.

Exclusive: MGM+ has given an eight-episode series order to American Classic, a half-hour comedy starring and executive produced by Oscar winner Kevin Kline. Jon Tenney co-stars in the series from co-creators Michael Hoffman and Bob Martin.

This marks only the second half-hour comedy series in MGM+’s history after 2016’s Graves, starring Nick Nolte, which ran for two seasons. (The linear channel and streaming service’s other half-hour original was the 2021 dramedy Bridge and Tunnel.)

American Classic had been in the works at MGM+ for more than three years; it was announced as part of the development slate of the platform (then named Epix) on February 3, 2022. Fifth Season has since come on board as studio, with Mar-Key Pictures, Likely Story and Anonymous Content producing.

The comedy centers on Broadway star and notorious narcissist Richard Bean (Kline) who suffers a spectacular...

Dave Chappelle and Bowen Yang Hug It Out After Earlier Standoff
Image
After a brief embrace at the end of the latest episode of Saturday Night Live, it appears a truce has been called in the cold war between funny guys Dave Chappelle and Bowen Yang. If, in fact, they were ever in a war at all.

The whispers began early last year when Chappelle unexpectedly turned up for the goodnight portion of Dakota Johnson’s episode. Eagle-eyed fans noted that while Chappelle positioned himself stage left, Yang found a spot on the opposite side of the stage as far from Chappelle as possible.

Pride.com had theories about the icy distance, suggesting Yang was angry about Chappelle’s “self-identifying as a trans-exclusionary radical feminist, or Terf, and for promoting nasty and homophobic rhetoric in his Netflix specials The Closer and The Dreamer.” The site also noted that Yang, Sarah Sherman and Molly Kearney didn’t participate in taping the previous episode...

Dave Chappelle Returns To ‘SNL’ With Controversial Monologue, Urges Trump To ‘Do Better This Time!’
Image
Dave Chappelle hosted Saturday Night Live for the fourth time on Jan. 18, delivering a monologue filled with his signature humor and social commentary.

The comedian, 51, tackled topics ranging from the California wildfires and Donald Trump’s return to the presidency to the allegations surrounding music mogul Sean Combs.

Chappelle opened his set by addressing the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, joking that their high cost was due to the city’s wealth.

“I think that’s because people in L.A. have nice stuff. I could burn 40,000 acres in Mississippi for like $600 or $700,” he quipped.

He also touched on conspiracy theories regarding the fires, referencing Luigi Mangione, the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, and noting how some individuals “lost their fire insurance” shortly before the blazes began.

Michelle Buteau Slams Dave Chappelle’s Trans Jokes In New Netflix Special: “We Can Tell Jokes And Stories & Not Disparage A Whole Community”
Image
Michelle Buteau has a few choice words for Dave Chappelle and his past comments about the trans community in her new Netflix comedy special.

Halfway through her comedy show dubbed “Michelle Buteau: A Buteau-ful Mind at Radio City Music Hall,” the comedienne transitions out of a lively discussion about her Black lesbian friend by saying “we can tell jokes and stories and not disparage a whole community.”

“We can do that,” she continues in her special, which dropped Dec. 31. “We can make it funny, we just have to work at it. So if you guys ever run into Dave Chappelle, can you let him know that shit? I don’t think he knows that shit. I don’t think we’ll ever run into Dave, though, because he is the Goat and that means going off about trans people. Dave, it’s not funny. It’s dangerous.”

“I can’t...

Michelle Buteau Calls Out Dave Chappelle for Anti-Trans Jokes in New Netflix Special
Image
Michelle Buteau, comedian and star of the underrated 2024 film Babes, slammed fellow comedian Dave Chappelle over the anti-trans rhetoric rampant in the comedy routines. The Survival of the Thickest star returned to Netflix for her second special, where she didn't shy away from addressing her fellow Netflix stand-up.

Per Variety, Buteau unleashed on Chappelle in her latest Netflix special, Michelle Buteau: A Buteau-ful Mind at Radio City Music Hall, after telling a story about her "Black lesbian friend." Noting the variety of reactions from the audience – some laughing, some uncomfortable – Buteau said comedians should be able "to tell jokes and stories and not disparage a whole community," adding, "We can do that. We can make it funny... We just have to work at it, right? So, if you ever run into Dave Chappelle, can you let him know that sh-t? I don't think he knows that sh-t."

She then referred to Chappelle as "the Goat,...

Michelle Buteau Slams Dave Chappelle’s ‘Dangerous’ Anti-Trans Jokes: ‘Doesn’t Feel Funny’
Image
Michelle Buteau knows a thing or two about telling jokes about marginalized people without offending “a whole community.” Dave Chappelle, on the other hand, not so much.

During her Michelle Buteau: A Buteau-ful Mind at Radio City Music Hall Netflix special that premiered Tuesday, the comedian came for Chappelle and his penchant for unfunny, targeted jokes about trans people.

After telling her own story about a lesbian friend of hers, Buteau said that comedians can “tell jokes and stories and not disparage a whole community.”

“We can do that. We can make it funny,...

Image
Michelle Buteau slammed Dave Chappelle and his controversial jokes about the transgender community in her new comedy special “Michelle Buteau: A Buteau-ful Mind at Radio City Music Hall,” which debuted Tuesday on Netflix.

Buteau began criticizing Chappelle after telling a story about her “Black lesbian friend.” She noted the subject matter elicited a spectrum of reactions from the crowd, with some laughing and some uncomfortable, but emphasized that comedians should be able “to tell jokes and stories and not disparage a whole community.”

“We can do that. We can make it funny,” Buteau said. “We just have to work at it, right? So, if you ever run into Dave Chappelle can you let him know that shit? I don’t think he knows that shit.”

Buteau then facetiously referred to Chappelle as “the Goat,” an acronym usually meaning “greatest of all time.” However, Buteau said in Chappelle’s case, “Goat...

Where You've Seen The Resident Alien Cast Before
Image
A sleeper science fiction comedy hit since its debut in 2021, "Resident Alien" has steadily been entertaining audiences with its extraterrestrial hijinks. The show adapts the comic book of the same name by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse, starring Alan Tudyk as an alien hiding in the small town of Patience, Colorado. Posing as the town's doctor Harry Vanderspeigle, the alien initially intends to wipe out humanity as part of his otherworldly directive, but then he learns to appreciate it. This change of heart is informed by the friends that Harry makes in town, with "Resident Alien" boasting a strong ensemble of actors joining Tudyk.

A lot of the charm in "Resident Alien" comes from its principal cast, along with the solid writing by series creator Chris Sheridan. As the series progresses, much of these characters' backstories are gradually revealed, giving heart to the wacky sci-fi antics Harry unleashes on the town.

10 TV Shows Like Fox's Bones Fans Should Binge-Watch Now
Image
If you're reading this, congrats on having likely finished watching "Bones," whether it's for the first or fifth time. The Fox show about a forensic anthropologist (Emily Deschanel), an FBI special agent (David Boreanaz), and the love and rotting skeletons between them is a daunting watchlist prospect, topping out at a whopping 246 episodes, but it's worth it if you love a good procedural. "Bones" debuted during an arguable high point in crime drama history, premiering in 2005 and wrapping up its lengthy run in 2017. The show isn't often recognized as particularly groundbreaking, but it certainly (re)started a trend toward forensics-based crime sagas led by partners who make moon eyes at each other every episode.

So what do you do when you finish watching a show this long? If you love TV as much as we do, the answer is naturally to find another show that'll make you feel the same thrill as "Bones" did.

Why Captain Zoe Andersen Was Killed Off The Rookie Her Death Explained
Image
While death is part of the job in the LAPD-focused procedural The Rookie, Captain Zoe Andersen's (Mercedes Mason) passing was particularly shocking. The Rookie is now going into its seventh season, and for over 100 episodes, it has chronicled the career trajectory of John Nolan (Nathan Fillion), who began the series as the LAPD's oldest rookie, graduating from the Police Academy in his 40s. He eventually worked his way up to training new crops of officers, but back in season 1, very few people had faith in the older rookie.

However, one person who did see Nolan's value was Captain Andersen. Having served with the United States Pentagon Police and in the Marines, Andersen brought a work ethic full of discipline and order to the LAPD. But while she was extremely by-the-book and tough, she was also compassionate and mindful, traits lacking in many TV cops. Andersen recognized that Nolan's...

Jonathan Del Arcos Hugh Borg In Star Trek: Tng & Picard Explained
Image
Jonathan Del Arco portrayed a former Borg drone named Hugh on Star Trek: The Next Generation and returned years later in Star Trek: Picard. The Borg first debuted in Tng season 2 and went on to become one of the franchise's most formidable villains. Throughout Tng, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) defeated the Borg several times, most notably in the iconic two-parter, "The Best of Both Worlds." After the Borg assimilated Picard and turned him into their mouthpiece, Locutus, the Enterprise-d captain developed an understandable fear and even hatred of the Borg.

Hugh came along in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 5, episode 23, "I, Borg," and completely changed the way Captain Picard and his crew understood the Borg. Jonathan Del Arco landed the role of Hugh in 1992 after a series of guest roles on other popular television shows. Del Arco continued to appear regularly on television throughout the 1990s and 2000s,...

Image
Martin Lawrence is set to develop a sequel to the 1999 film Blue Streak, which had come on the heels of his success with Michael Bay's Bad Boys. The original film, which co-starred Luke Wilson, Dave Chappelle, Peter Greene, Nicole Parker, John Hawkes, Octavia Spencer, Nicole Ari Parker, and William Forsythe, followed a jewel thief who attempts to retrieve a diamond he left behind at a police station, eventually pretending to be an officer, only to inadvertently get partnered with a real detective. Blue Streak has generally been considered a fan-favorite among Lawrence's filmography.

Now, a quarter of a century later, Deadline reports that a Blue Streak sequel is in early development through Lawrence's production company Run Tel Dat, with Cole Maliska currently writing the screenplay. Star Trek: Picard Wouldve Been A Borg Show If Patrick Stewart Didnt Return
Image
Jonathan Del Arco reveals Star Trek: Picard would have been a Borg spinoff show if Patrick Stewart didn't return as Admiral Jean-Luc Picard. Star Trek: Picard ran for 3 seasons on Paramount+ from 2020-2023. Picard had three different sets of showrunners, from Michael Chabon in season 1, to Akiva Goldsman and Terry Matalas in season 2, to Matalas running season 3 solo to great acclaim. Along with Jean-Luc, the Borg were part of every season of Star Trek: Picard.

The Borg originated in Star Trek: The Next Generation, with Jonathan Del Arco guest starring as Hugh in Tng's season 5 episode, "I, Borg." Del Arco reprised Hugh, a Borg drone separated from the Collective and adopting a personal identity, in Tng season 6 and 7's "Descent" two-parter. Jonathan returning as Hugh in Star Trek: Picard 27 years later was a welcome surprise. However, Hugh's story was underserved by Star Trek: Picard season 1, and abruptly ended when Hugh...
