My Yacht

An awkward length that perhaps does this charming story a disservice. A tighter cut does exist but I've not seen it yet. A charming idea, and a great chance to get a sense of the Cannes vibe if you haven't been and to understand some of the wannabes hanging around the Croisette... some may be love lorn romantics. Slightly let down by the lack of chemistry between the two leads, but Anna Neil makes a beautiful "fair maiden" for Tom Wontner's romantic to yearn for. Huck Melnick has the right level of quirkiness to bring life to what could otherwise be an irritating voice over and the other actors are fine in roles that add colour to the story, such as the best friend's shallow machinations and the stooges brought in to help Tom look more like the big shot producer he thinks Anna wants him to be. A sweet ending where all is revealed is ambiguous enough not to be cloying.

I just finished watching MY YACHT and as I usually would do, I started to write my review for IMDb. However, I was shocked to see that so far the film has an abysmally low score of 1.7! This makes you wonder if some of the people voting never saw the film, as it's fresh and interesting throughout and would make a nice feature-length film.

The story is about a guy who is at Cannes and pretends to be a rich billionaire. The fact is, he's a nobody but he can't bring himself to tell a girl he's smitten with the truth. So, throughout the film he tries to impress her and finagles his way onto a yacht and into a luxury resort in order to convince her that the stories he's telling her are true.

A clever idea and if it were hashed out more, it would make an interesting independent film. Just don't believe the negative scores--it's a very good film.

My Yacht is a classy affair that I greatly enjoyed, full of the little quirks and touches that are so often missing from more mainstream fare. It takes playful swipes at the film industry, but is very much a romance at heart. Some wonderful performances and crisp direction, and I very much hope to see it reaching a wider audience (I caught it at this year's Glastonbury). Cannes looks wonderful in the film, and it made me very much want to go there myself. Lead actor Tom Wontner has a slightly John-Gordon Sinclair air about him, with perhaps a tiny pinch of the less irritating elements of Hugh Grant. All in all, a terrific effort and I hope to see more from those involved very soon.
