This movie caught my attention with historical clips which I have not seen before. It presented early clips of Hitler as he was growing up and into his position of Fuhrer. As well, clips of his master of propaganda Goebels and others such as Hindenberg, Nazi youth, etc. As well, it was interesting to see what was happening up to the point where the Nazi's took over power in Germany and Hitler's own rise to power. There were 2-3 speeches shown at various Nazi party rallies as well as odd but interesting performance clip of Josephine Baker and a shot of Buster Keaton. This movie contains no dialogue except for some clip audio, which did not take away from it viewing experience.
there are no reviews of this film? strange. but then, what is there to say? a lot of pointless footage with scant substance. I watched for 40 minutes, halfway through, we are taken chronologically through 9 years by this point. we hear about 2 minutes total of speeches from der fuhrer, the rest is a random collection of beat up clips of crowded streets, the occasional rural idyll. either the rest of the film is action packed, full filled and crowded to the rafters with information of some kind.... or it continues as it began for the first half, pretty much devoid of substance and utterly lacking in any power whatsoever. I'm amazed at the high rating of this empty snoozefest.
This film was worth watching, if for no other reason than that the unabashed messianic power of Hitler is clearly seen. The scene of Hitler speaking for the first time as Chancellor in 1933, clearly demonstrates his power. The film of the audience, many of them women, are shown absolutely beaming in joy and rapture as they sing the Horst Wessel Lied. Like William L. Shirer noted, (Who by the way was there) It was a like a Bible revival meeting in the deep south, the listeners were ecstatic.
Have you ever had the conversation which goes like this: How could Hitler have Happened? Well, watching this movie you will see why he became so powerful. The fear of the communists, the failing of the economy, the appeal of strength, they are all shown with emotional appeal here. We can't blame the Germans quite as much as we did before we watched this. Was the election of Hitler foolish? Of Course. Was it understandable? More so once this film is watched.
