This Sunday afternoon fare was very good indeed. The music, dancing, and representation of Hispanics in a positive light and not as the usual gang member, drug dealing, etc. was refreshing. It reminded one of the need for courage to be yourself and to follow your own dream not that of someone else. As to the actors, Kamar De los Reyes is quite the talent. His sensitivity and display of frustration not to mention his DANCING! What can I say but that his solo at the festival was incredibly beautiful. I would recommend it to anyone of my friends and will do so. Hope to see more of Senor Reyes in a leading role. Bring on the music!
For anyone who likes dance movies such as DIRTY DANCING, STRICTLY BALLROOM, and SAVE THE LAST DANCE this one is a worthy addition to that genre. Like those films, this one shares the standard plot of romantic leads from different backgrounds overcoming obstacles with comic relief from their sidekicks and lots of enjoyable music and dancing. Once again we have the awkward heroine who faces antagonism but blossoms while taking dance lessons from a hunky homeboy. Kamar De Los Reyes and Annabeth Gish were very appealing as sensitive soulmates. I have two complaints though- it was unbelievable to me that she would even consider marrying the numbskull fiance after connecting with Nick and it didn't make sense that her friends and mother would object to Nick simply because he was Hispanic- when he was a cultured college educated school teacher and even Catholic like she was. Movie writers seem to keep wanting to perpetuate cultural biases by presenting conflicts intended to show that there is something shocking about people of different ethnic backgrounds having relationships when in the real world it has become quite commonplace and accepted-at least in MY world.
this one surprised me. i chose it at the video store, just because. i'd never heard about it, nor the actors, except for Daniel Cosgrove, thanks to life in Pine Valley (AMC) so, i had no bias.
after the first watch, i thought it was ok, but the second time round i enoyed it much more. The leads were well cast, esp Kamar, who plays Nick. He is sexy, a good actor to boot, and he was made to move to music. i could have spent the entire movie just watching him dance. Annabeth Gish was good also, although i thought that she lacked a little in the rhythem department. i will say though, that after the wonderful, natural moves of Kamar and Tesse Santiago, Amy was more than passable.
there were of course little things that irritated me. the fact that she chose to re-commit to her loser fiance, and then practically go through with the wedding! hello! also, her mothers attitude about Nick's heritage as well as her friends anti-nick advice, then the sudden turnabout from both parties in the end, including Tesse's character.
despite that, this movie is a treat for anyone who loves the sultry music, the wonderful beats, the dancing and the eye candy in the form of Kamar. i loved it.

movies I have ever seen....I simply loved the pairing of Annabeth Gish and Kamar De Los Reyes in this movie. They looked good together and danced well together. I can't imagine Annabeth not doing her best at any show or movie, but I have to say this was simply one of her best. I have to say that this movie deserves a big 9 and all of the stars in it as well...simply because I never say 10, no one is perfect. I would (okay I have) watch this movie over and over again. Romance at it's best right there on the screen.
Nicole Sullivan, Kamar de los Reyes' body (Oh yes!!), Tessie Santiago (*singing* "Behind the mask . . ."), and the choreography, this movie would have been terrible. That's unfortunate, because I feel VH1 has produced some of the most original movies/series on Basic Cable.
I like stories that have cultures coming together, because that's how it should be (!), but I REALLY feel they should have gotten a better lead actress. Annabeth Gish acted like she ate a cold, 3 day old burrito prior to shooting this movie. She was extremely dry. There was a moment when she was supposed to look pensive, but she looked braindead for about 40 seconds. I thought it was an outtake. Nicole Sullivan would have been so much better in the lead role.
The movie had a decent plot, but the screenplay lacked. Plus, everyone was pushing someone away from something they wanted without a significant reason for pushing them in the first place. That's not drama, that's a reason to take a screenwriting class--or to pick another career.
I have to give this one a 4, because what I did like, kept it from being disqualified. I can't save the last dance, because the dancehall is closed--indefinitely.
