In Harihar Nagar (1990) : Briefl Review -

Insane Comic Features and Frenzy Youth Characterisations by Siddiqui-Lal from this Malayalam Classic will be remembered for years. In Harihar Nagar has to be the most hysterical comedy by Siddiqui-Lal in my opinion. And kindly note that i only meant it for the comedy scenes, not the writing quality or other aspects. The first half is complete madness and then the second half is more about the good writing than laughter and yet it has some terrific funny scenes in between. So, the opening scene is about 4 minutes long with credits and then our four heroes show up. I loved that opening song. A complete humming material for youth audience. Then, these four unemployed men try to impress a new neighbor. Hilarity ensues, until the antagonist puts in an appearance. The kind of connect In Harihar Nagar makes with Youth audience is simply unmatchable because it shows that fun side of youth of our country. What would most of the young chaps do? Of course flirting and smarting over girls and this film is entirely based on this affair. Yes, it becomes a completely different matter later but the beginning or better say the entire first half is all about that attraction towards a girl and using macho tricks to woo her. And what hilarious characters they are. Four guys, each one different from another but with only common factor that they all want a beautiful Girlfriend/Wife. Their tricks, those conflicts, that Linear equation of storytelling and how it totally turns 360° around in the second half is all i say is just brilliant. I don't really think any Multi-starrer heroes comedy can do better than this. Acting, story, screenplay, dialogues, cinematography, music, twists, situations, locations and direction everything here is immensely gorgeous. Thank you so Siddiqui-Lal for giving us the best youth oriented comic features of our time. In one Word, CULT!

Four young men living in Harihar Nagar Colony are Mahadevan (Mukesh), Govindan Kutty (Siddique), Appukuttan (Jagadeesh) and Thomas (K. Ashokan). In the colony, Maya (Geetha Vijayan) is coming to a new residence with the girl. The theme of the film is their attempts to take Maya and in the midst of the leaping slopes.

The film In Harihar Nagar, directed by Siddique-Lal, is a multifaceted cinematic work that incorporates elements of comedy, thriller, and drama. It has been widely acclaimed for its ability to engage audiences with a compelling blend of humor, music, and narrative. The film's success has led to the widespread recognition of its characters, including the antagonist, even years after its initial release. The film's memorable dialogues, such as "Thomas kutty, vittoda," have left an indelible mark on the memories of individuals from my generation.

The film depicts the lives of four young men. They celebrate life with joy and excitement. Subsequently, a girl and her grandparents take up residence next door. The men attempt to establish a connection with the girl through various means. They eventually discern that the girl's objective is to ascertain the circumstances surrounding her brother's demise. In an effort to gain her trust, they pretended as friends of the girl's brother and manipulated stories. These actions result in significant challenges for the men in the second half of the film.

The antagonist's primary objective is to recover funds that were stolen by Andrews and subsequently held by Sethu Madhavan, the girl's brother. In pursuit of this goal, the antagonist murdered both individuals but was unable to locate the funds. Consequently, he shifted his focus to their families and subsequently to the four men in question. These individuals employed a series of tactics that persisted until the film's conclusion.

The narrative is of a high standard, and the acting of Mukesh, Jagadeesh, Sidheeque and Ashokan is of an excellent quality. The cameo role of Suresh Gopi is also noteworthy. All other cast members are perfectly suited to their roles.

The film's emotional scenes are executed with great skill, and the musical numbers are of an excellent quality and highly popular.

I always wondered what Malayalam film makers of the so called golden age would have made if they had the resources of Hollywood or at least bollywood. But then again I see movies like In hariharnagar and decide they never needed it.

Four friends trying to impress one girl and their adventures/misadventures finds the perfect setting for Mukesh, Siddique, Asokan and Jagadeesh to dazzle us with their rib ticking performances. The natural comic timing and believability perfected by the director duo of Sidique Lal is something every Malayalam movie bluff talks about.

The simple story is filled with unforgettable moments and iconic lines that still the present day actors and directors aim to achieve. the songs are really good and the movie has an amazing back ground score, which perfectly blends with each mood and scene. the movie gets serious but you wont feel a a thing. A suave and sophisticated villain john honai is still one of the cult favorites. I would recommend this to all who loves a good laugh and awe at the sheer brilliance of malayalam cinema

I heard the sequel is in the makes, hope its at least half as good as the original.
