Mega Man Xtreme is the first of two Mega Man X titles for the Game Boy Color (although this first entry is playable on older Game Boy models). Set between the second and third Mega Man X games, the game sees Mega Man X (or X for short) as hackers have hacked into the mother computer of Maverick Hunter base. To get to the bottom of this, X is transferred into the mother computer with the help of Middy, a computer genius who appears only in this game, and must face Mavericks from his past adventures serving a protection to the core.
Mega Man Xtreme does a good job emulating what Mega Man X would look like on NES. Like the Mega Man Gamy Boy games (known in Japan as Rockman World), Mega Man Xtreme takes Mavericks from Mega Man X and Mega Man X2. Unlike those games, Xtreme separates them in two difficulty settings, with the second unlocked by beating the first, with a third "Extreme" difficulty unlocked after the second (Hard) difficulty is beaten, which allows to fight all eight. As a result, the stages are redone to add capsules (the first four containing the armor from Mega Man X, with some limited additions, with the second four containing Zero Scramble Programs, which summons Zero to perform one of four different attacks.
While this does a good job, it is sadly far from perfect. The controls are a wee bit messy, as button inputs seem to to not register sometimes (especially when attacking). Also, the game does have places where cheap hits can happen, and the bosses can overpower you (even with the full armor upgrade) and frame rate and collision issues can ruin timing, especially when it comes to jumping. over spikes and botomless pits.
