Maria Marusjka

Most know this little gem of a film, "Maria Marusjka", from the Norwegian movie being watched by Matt Dillon's character Randy in the hilarious comedy "One Night at McCool's. He says that it's a great movie, and it really is.

Maria Marusjka is based on Kjell Askildsen's novel "Omgivelser" ("Srrroundings") and is directed by Oddvar Bull-Tuhus which got The Movie Critics Prize for the movie.

This is one of those un justful forgotten films, but is finally out on Blu-Ray Disc from Norwegian Film Classics. Music is made by the very acclaimed jazz saxophonist Jan Garbarek

We're on a remote island in high summer time, where a young writer arrives to get inspiration during his holidays after the family running the lighthouse get s an idea that this would bring som excitement.

The writer's hope for calm days will soon be mere a dream, when he finds out that not only the lighthouse keeper is watching him though binoculars, but also the wife and their daughter, through holes in the walls and through the bushes. So he also starts spying on them...

The film is a pleasant watch until it grows into a mysterious and nervy Hitchcocky spying film with lots of credits to "Rear window".

Acting in this chamber piece is great from all cast of four, Swedish Peter Lindgren as the lighthouse keeper, Anne Gullestad as his wife, Bente Cappelen as the daughter and Pål Løkkeberg as the writer.

The film is well worth a watch, and combines a fresh summer feel with a nervy power game on an remote island.

This movie is made available in november 2024 when it was released on interregional Blu-Ray Disk by Norwegian Film Classics as the 44th release in a new series on classics, NFK0044, with subtitles in English, and is supposed to be held in stock for film lovers.
