Eyewitness

This documentary took several years to produce, the resistance coming from the Polish Government. Every piece of authentic art work produced by the inmates during their stay at Auschwitz that was filmed in this documentary was being stored in some back room at the Auschwitz camp and needed approval. The 2 filmmakers first had to find who the artists were that produced the artwork and then contact them individually, getting the artists approval by a certified letter in order to film their artwork, this was an lofty process. This is the only known documentary made based on the authentic art work of the inmates and their accounts in this Holocaust camp in Auschwitz. The artwork filmed was made in assorted sizes, based on what ever was available to the inmates to record history and let the world know what was taking place in these camps, some artwork the size of a postage stamp. Ulf Backstrom dedicated years of work on this film, using some of his and his wife's own personal funds to produce this film. Ulf Backstrom never received any personal pay for his work on this production of this film stating "This is a real story that people need to know and have access to". Ulf Backstrom never received the proper credentials or credit for this film due to the original form being filled out incorrectly at the academy awards.
