Obviously This is Missing Footage

Pinocchio (1911)

Geppetto (Augusto Mastripietri) takes a piece of wood and turns it into a puppet named Pinocchio (Ferdinand Guillaume) who eventually comes to life.

This Italian film from director Giulio Antamoro was the first time the story was told and I must admit that I found it to be quite entertaining. I've seen a couple different sources list the running time somewhere between forty and fifty-minutes but the print I viewed was only five-minutes so obviously these sources are either wrong or the movie is only available in a much shorter version.

I'm going to guess that the majority of the film is lost and we're just left with the five-minutes. We see Geppetto getting the piece of wood and turning it into Pinocchio. We also see Pinocchio in Toyland. The film pretty much ends on a cliffhanger, which is another reason to believe that most of the footage is missing. It's really too bad because I liked the look of Pinocchio and especially early on when we see the tree and the puppet just coming into form.

For many years it was believed that only about six minutes of this film existed. However in 2018 the Fondazione Cineteca Italiana found a near complete nitrate negative from which it restored the film including the original tinting.
