The Miller and the Donkey

When the cat plays the banjo, the donkey dances. Farmer Alfalfa reads in the paper that a circus will pay a lot of money for a dancing donkey, and so he tries to take the donkey to the circus. But the donkey does not wish to go.

Aside from the enormous coincidence and the question of whether the circus is well stocked with fiddling cats, this cartoon is intended to show a stubborn man versus a stubborn mule, leading to the question of who can be stubborner. It's a nice idea for a cartoon, and producer Paul Terry was still ambitious for his studio at this stage, but while the gags are good, the speed at which the studio had to turn out cartoons -- one a week -- work against being able to get anything superior out.
