Take Five

'R. S. V. P' is one of the truly great short films of the 1990s. The full house went wild when it was first shown at the Castro Theatre during the San Francisco LGBT Film Festival. It was one of the shorts that made the Boy Shorts program the ticket to have and that led to a replay on Sunday. Thirty plus years later, I still have it at home to watch time and again.

It speaks to a time in Gay history and more generally about the relationships between people.

How can something be so sparse and overflowing at once. Who thought pinning something on a tack board could explain a point in time so perfectly.

Part requiem, Part memorial, part movie.

Sid returns to his empty apartment after attending the funeral of Andy, his lover who has died of aids. When Sid turns on the radio, he learns that his Andy has requested a song and as the music plays, we see through current films and memories those who Andy's life (and death) has affected.

This is the best film I have ever seen.

I saw this film at a film festival in Ottawa, Canada, soon after it was released. I was very moved by it, and although I have seen over 200 films since then, I still consider it to be the best film, of any genre, and of any length, that I have ever seen.
