I found Deep Impact to be a very good "study" on how we has humans, may react to an E.L.E. (see this movie for details on that.) The special effects were good, but the best thing about this movie was the focus on the characters. This wasn't loud and stupid as "that other asteroid movie." This film will entertain you and mostly, touch your heart. You actually feel the doom that is about to reach these people, and to me, that is good film making.
About the only thing I could pick on would be the performance of Téa Leoni. To me, she was never convincing. She seemed down and depressed all of the time, even when she was doing the news. Very odd performance.
I give this film a B+

"Deep Impact" was one of two collision-related movies released in summer, 1998 (the other was "Armageddon"). Whereas the latter had no other purpose than to have Bruce Willis kick ass, the former was actually quite good. More than just an action movie, this one shows the human aspect of everything. One of the most interesting aspects is Pres. Tom Beck (Morgan Freeman). Whereas we usually expect black men in movies to be macho, this guy talks about his belief in God. I guess that the only thing of which I would have liked to see more would have been the shelters, but I guess that such an aspect would probably occupy an entire movie on its own. All in all, a really good movie.
Discouraged by the bad rep this movie has, especially in relation to its so-called competitor Armageddon, I was lured into watching from a short TikTok clip I had of the presidents initial address to the nation.
While you can only rate movies in whole numbers, it is movies like this that make that frustrating. For me, giving this movie a 9/10 in an understatement. Never have I been moved by a film enough to write a review on IMDb. Without spoiling the narrative, this film may have literally altered my brain chemistry. The value of your loved ones and the value of having purpose in our world is so clearly examined by this piece through the wide array of character relationships.
This movie has moved me to be the best I can, and make an impact in this world that is worth saving.

I remember being a young boy, and between this, Armageddon, and Independence Day, Hollywood was constantly obsessed with end-of-the-world chaos. Back then, it was all about the destruction, that's what grabbed my attention.
Revisiting Deep Impact now, it's not just the spectacle, but the eerie realism that sticks with you. This isn't just explosions and heroics . It's a film that asks how possible is this to happen? And what happens when humanity has some time to prepare for its own end?
The story kicks off when a young amateur astronomer (Elijah Wood) discovers a comet on a collision course with Earth. What follows is a global effort to stop it, from government cover-ups to a last-ditch space mission to blow it apart. The astronauts, led by Robert Duvall, add that essential sci-fi element, giving the film both tension, energy and hope.
Morgan Freeman absolutely nails it as President Beck. His calm, commanding presence makes every announcement feel weighty, like the world really is about to change.
Téa Leoni plays Jenny Lerner, a journalist who uncovers the government's secret project "E. L. E." (Extinction-Level Event). While her performance felt a bit emotionally flat to me, her final scene, standing on the beach with her estranged father as the wave hits , is quietly powerful and symbolic. It hit me harder now, especially as a parent.
Elijah Wood's character, Leo, is a bit sidelined, but his young-love subplot brings a kind of innocence to the story. He marries his girlfriend to save her from the disaster, and while it doesn't evolve into sweeping intimacy as it could have, it works in the context of everything else collapsing around them.
What makes Deep Impact different is how grounded it feels. The way the government reacts, how people prepare, how families deal with the end, it's all painfully plausible. That's what gives this movie greater staying power.
Honestly, I think there was enough substance here to warrant a Deep Impact II. I'd have been sold.
In the end, this is a thoughtful, emotional disaster film. As an adult, It's not just about the destruction, it's essentially about humanity. Deep Impact is one of those underrated gems from the '90s that's absolutely worth revisiting.

5.9!? I can't believe that. I know disaster movies are usually crap such as The Day After Tomorrow, Armageddon, Godzilla, Independence Day, etc. This however was not crap. It boasted a fine cast that did great work the standout being Morgan Freeman and Robert Duvall. The rest of the cast though also did quite well. The story was handled in a fairly realistic manner and didn't require me to roll my eyes at the many plot contrivances the way the others I listed did. The only major flaw for me was the casting of tea Leoni. The usually dependable actress was extremely bland in this film. She has done much better work in her career. Despite that flaw this is another fine movie that for some reason is really under rated.

- WissenswertesA line was edited in the President's press conference scene. President Beck stated "Life will go on, we will prevail." Originally, President Beck said "Life will go on, we will prevail. This is not Armageddon." The producers later realized that the movie was going to be in box-office competition with the movie Armageddon - Das jüngste Gericht (1998).
- PatzerThe comet is depicted as nearly white when in reality comets are among the darkest objects in the Solar System, normally reflecting about 3% of the light that hits them (in comparison, Earth reflects about 39%). The movie producers were aware of this fact, but special effects technology of the time made it extremely difficult to depict a black object against black space.

- Crazy CreditsThe opening DreamWorks logo ends with the clouds in the logo fading away to show the stars in space in the background, and the title words DEEP IMPACT are filled with a view of the Earth.
