'Summer of Fear' is basically an imitation of 'Fear', which had superior production values and was also released in 1996. 'Fear' also starred Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon.
Truth be told, I did enjoy some parts of 'Summer of Fear' in a guilty pleasure sort of way and the story did have potential for an intriguing thriller/horror film. However, it is obvious that it was made as a TV film which was envisaged to be a sort of rip-off of 'Fear', as I have already explained. Some of the acting by Corin Nemec as Simon near the end of this film (prepare for a surprising plot twist), for example, has to be some of the most laughably atrocious acting that I have ever seen! Corin Nemec is definitely not Mark Wahlberg, let me leave it at that; but, to be fair, Corin Nemec did portray the demented aspect of his character well, at least before the ending.

A lot of upsetting and dramatically bad things happen to this family. I sat waiting for the horror to start, but there was nothing but disturbing events. If I liked drama and seeing people upset and hurt, I'd give this a higher rating.
I think that I read a book by Lois Duncan with the same plot. Is this this movie based on that book? I'm not sure, because the names are different and she is not listed in the writing credits. Anyway, this movie has David Gallagher, who is really cute, so if you're a fan of 7th Heaven, go watch it.
I've seen this movie and it is the exact plot as in a book by Lois Duncan called "Summer of Fear", it's a good book you should read it. But still their are no writing credits towards her even though it my say this other lady wrote a book called "Simon Says", it's still the same book and I'm pretty sure "Summer of Fear" was written first. But the movie was ok it really wasn't that suspenseful and it's really a movie you'd have to be up with insomnia to watch.I wouldn't waste 3 dollars to rent it. Though a good movie you should sit through is "Cruel Intentions"!
Average cast. Predictable plot. And a happy ending... Uhh.. What kinda movie is this supposed to be anyways? Too lame to be a thriller, so let's say it's one of those semi-suspense flicks. Pretty standard film all in all that really has not much new to offer... If you don't have anything better to do, you might as well watch this.
