Despite starring in 2006's The Omen, Julia Stiles still has not seen The First Omen (2024). Stiles was the leading female star of the 2006 remake, which attempted to share Damien Thorn's story with a more modern audience. It was a financial success, earning $120 million on a $25 million budget, though it earned divisive responses from critics. Its prequel, The First Omen, earned far more love from critics, though it still struggled at the box office. Stiles did not appear in the prequel, as Rachel Hurd-Wood instead took the role of Katherine.
In an interview with Screen Rant's Grant Hermanns, Stiles explained that she has little interest in the prequel. While she was partly delayed by the production of her upcoming romance, Wish You Were Here (2025), she also generally dislikes watching horror movies. She might have been willing to star in a horror remake, but watching it is something else entirely.

Before he made us believe a man could fly and before he made arguably the quintessential '80s buddy cop movie, Richard Donner directed a terrific supernatural horror film that feels like a predecessor of the "Final Destination" franchise: "The Omen." One of the best '70s horror movies, "The Omen" is a movie about an adopted child, Damien, who may be the prophesied antichrist, whose very existence means the coming of the end of the world and utter ruin for humanity.
Starring Gregory Peck, the original 1976 film was a huge hit despite mixed reviews and even got nominated for two Oscars: Best Original Score and Best Original Song (it won Best Original Score for composer Jerry Goldsmith).
Interestingly enough, Richard Donner initially didn't want to treat this as a horror movie. Instead, he wanted to leave the supernatural aspects of the story open to interpretation, with the audience unsure...

Damien Thorn is the Antichrist, and the trilogy that tells his unholy tale remains popular almost fifty years later. Indeed, while putting together this movie ranked list and revisiting the original Omen franchise, we were surprised at how well the old movies held up. Omen fans will be happy that the series has been restarted in a pretty interesting way earlier this year, with The First Omen a surprisingly excellent prequel to the original trilogy (check out our interviews with the director and cast here), even if it takes one large liberty involving Damien’s birth that some fans may have an issue with. So, how do the Omen films rank against each other? Let’s take a look, but remember that the TV series Damien (which lasted for one season in 2016) is not included, as we’re sticking with feature films.
The Omen (2006)
There’s honestly no reason for this movie to exist.

Although The Omen franchise might seem complicated, watching The Omen movies in order perfectly aligned until 2024s prequel The First Omen. 2024s The First Omen is the latest addition to The Omen series. The Omen franchise began in 1976 with director Richard Donners seminal classic The Omen, which follows the story of an American diplomat who begins to fear that his son is secretly the Antichrist. The Omen was a box office hit, resulting in 1978s sequel Damien: Omen II.
The series continued throughout the 70s and 80s, ending in the early 90s with Omen IV: The Awakening. The series was then dormant until 2024s prequel The First Omen, which complicated the timeline of the franchise by flashing back to the years before the original movie. The First Omen takes place before The Omen, with its final scenes leading directly into the original horror hit.

The Omen's eerie events during production, like lightning striking and plane incidents, add to the film's cursed reputation. Real-life incidents eerily mirrored movie scenes, from impalement to beheading, sparking fears of a curse on the cast. Animals on set at Windsor Wild Safari Park went wild, attacking and even killing people, adding to the film's creepy aura.

A new streaming popularity chart sees The First Omen rank as the sixth most popular title for the week of May 30 June 5. The horror prequel earned positive reviews, but struggled at the box office. The First Omen likely struggled due to its higher budget and lack of audience interest in continuations of decades-old horror properties.
The First Omen has become a streaming success after its lackluster box office performance earlier this year. Directed by Arkasha Stevenson, the prequel to Richard Donner's 1976 film, The Omen, stars Nell Tiger Free as Margaret, an American woman who joins a convent in Rome before uncovering a dark conspiracy to bring about the birth of pure evil. The First Omen reviews were mostly positive from critics, but the film struggled at the box office and has only earned $53.8 million worldwide.

The First Omen crosses $50 million box office mark with positive reviews, but still falls short of other films in the horror franchise. The First Omen has recevied positive reviews, getting an 81% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. To reach profitability, The First Omen needs to double its budget with $60 million box office total, with increasingly slim chances of reaching that goal.
The First Omen manages to get past a major box office milestone despite a tough track record. The First Omen is a prequel to the classic 1970s horror film The Omen. Its plot focuses on the story of a young woman named Magaret who is sent off to a convent in Rome in order to begin a pious lifestyle, only to discover a darkness in the church that leads her to uncover a terrifying conspiracy and question her faith.
As per Collider, The First Omen has now crossed a major box office milestone.

Despite its long-standing success, The Omen was never intended to spawn an entire media franchise. The original horror film was a gigantic hit in the 1970s and 80s, eventually leading to an entire film trilogy that concluded with The Final Conflict in 1981. Over the following decades, fans continued to show a clear interest in the sinister franchise, eventually leading to several reboots across a variety of mediums.

Since then, the creators of the three films and one television series have expanded upon The Omen franchise, and although some of them failed to capture the magic of the original, they've yielded plenty of quality content for fans of the horror genre.

On April 5th, 20th Century Studios gave a theatrical release to The First Omen, which serves as a prequel to the 1976 horror classic The Omen (watch it Here) – and the movie was surprisingly well-received, with JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray giving it an 8/10 review and Tyler Nichols writing an article about why it works so well. The movie hasn’t been burning up the box office charts; made on a budget of $30 million, it has only pulled in $36 million so far. But if a sequel were to get the greenlight, director Arkasha Stevenson knows one subject she would want to cover in the follow-up: the mystery of the jackal.
In the original The Omen, we were told that the Antichrist was born of a jackal. The First Omen digs deeper into his parentage, letting us know that it wasn’t quite as simple (although very strange) as it appeared to be in the original movie,...

The First Omen is the sixth installment in The Omen franchise, but despite its positive critical reviews, it failed to attract a wide theatrical audience. The disappointing box office performance may be attributed to prequel fatigue, long-gestating lore alterations, and competition from rival horror films. Originally intended for streaming, the prequel's theatrical release raised its profile but has yet to become a true box-office success.
The First Omen, a prequel to the classic 1976 supernatural horror film The Omen, tells the story of a young American woman, a devout nun in training, who uncovers a horrifying conspiracy to facilitate the birth of the Antichrist in Rome, where American diplomat Robert Thorn takes custody of the Antichrist, renamed Damien Thorn, in The Omen.
The First Omen marks the sixth installment in the now nearly 50-year-old The Omen film series, which had been previously dormant since the release of the 2006 The Omen remake.

The infamous Satanic Panic is often referred to as the 20th century equivalent of the Salem Witch Trials, with innocent heavy metal fans and Dungeons & Dragons players being accused of worshipping Satan while apocalyptic conspiracy theories about the rise of the Antichrist and the supposed “Mark of the Beast” ran rampant amongst radical believers. However, what a lot of people don’t know is that horror cinema played an accidentally crucial role in inspiring this regrettable era of prejudice and misinformation.
In fact, there are a handful of specific horror films that informed most of the fears we now associate with the Satanic Panic, with some of the most influential being Richard Donner’s 1977 classic The Omen and its numerous follow-ups. Despite playing fast and loose with their religious influences, these movies would go on to popularize then-obscure bits of biblical lore (like the Satanic connotations of “666”) that most...

The First Omen is set to earn over $8 million in its opening weekend, the franchise's second-best debut. However, the movie's opening weekend box office performance is not enough to make up for its $30 million budget. The Omen franchise started in 1976 and remains iconic, with the original being a precursor to the slasher craze of the 1980s. The Omen sequels have had mixed reviews and commercial success but most remain entertaining in their own ways. The latest entry, 2024's The First Omen, is a prequel that could lead to future sequels.
The Omen franchise is one of horror's most iconic, and is still running decades on from its 1976 debut. Before the likes of Michael Myers or Freddy Krueger stole his limelight, The Omen's Antichrist villain Damien Thorn was one of the genre's first icons. The original film's emphasis on gory deaths was also a precursor to the slasher craze of the 1980s, even if The Omen saga is a (somewhat) classier affair. Pretty much every decade since the 1970s has seen a new entry in the property too, be it on the big or small screen.

Plot: A young novitiate in Rome (Nell Tiger Free) is warned by an ex-communicated priest (Ralph Ineson) that she’s at the center of a sinister conspiracy at her church dedicated to spawning the anti-Christ.
Review: I’ve always really enjoyed The Omen as a franchise. Even as a kid, I found something about the original trilogy centring around Damien Thorn especially gripping. However, I never had much use for the cheap TV movie sequel (Omen IV: The Awakening) or the scene-for-scene remake, which, despite a game cast, didn’t come close to recapturing the grisly spirit of Richard Donner’s original.
As such, I figured The First Omen would be just another would-be franchise starter, but I have to give 20th Century Studios and Disney credit – they made one hell of a cool horror flick (pun intended). In some ways, it’s a bit like Wonka (bear with...

This article contains major spoilers for "The First Omen."Hello folks! Welcome back to Nunsploitation 2024: Battle of the Babies.
When last we left the saga of Damien Thorn, it was 1981, and Damien was played by the devilishly handsome Sam Neill in "The Final Conflict." In that film, the Antichrist nearly fulfilled his evil purpose in halting the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, but was foiled by his one-time lover, journalist Kate Reynolds (Lisa Harrow), who through the grace of God and her own strength was able to fatally stab Damien with the magical dagger of Megiddo, the weapon that poor Robert Thorn (Gregory Peck) failed to use against his adopted son Damien (Harvey Spencer Stephens) when he was a child in 1976.
If a 33-year-old Damien in 1981 seems implausible given that the first film sees Damien as merely five years of age and the 1978 sequel, "Damien: Omen II" follows the...

Over the almost fifty years of its existence, The Omen franchise has been a rollercoaster. The original The Omen was terrifying. I am not sure the world asked for yet another take on 20th Century Fox’s Omen franchise, the constantly regurgitated series with Damien (who made the numbers 666 iconic) and company. Since the 1976 original, when Damien first appeared in the movie with Gregory Peck and Lee Remick, we have had Damien: Omen II, The Final Conflict, Omen IV: The Awakening (in which a girl becomes the antichrist for the first time), the 2006 remake The Omen, and even a 2016 Damien TV series. Of course, like all these horror franchises, it is inevitable someone would come up with the idea for an origin story, and that is what we now have with The First Omen, which is, of course, not the first, just the latest. But, set in 1971, it does attempt to take us right to the doorstep of the actual first, the Richard Donner-directed 1976 starter.

This 70s-set prelude to the classic satanic horror has flair but struggles with the weight and familiarity of what came before
We didn’t need a prequel to landmark 1976 horror The Omen but we’d have been foolish not to expect one. The major genre films of that era – Halloween, The Exorcist, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Alien, Suspiria – have all seen a new round of remakes, reboots and remixes in the last few years – some tolerable, most not – and so another Damien chapter is as inevitable as the rise of Damien himself.
It’s not the first time anyone has tried either. After the series sputtered out in 1991 with the cheapo gender-swapped TV movie Omen IV: The Awakening, the films went the way of most horror during that decade and it took until 2006, a time of anything-goes, mostly gutter-level remakes, for the sixes to align once again. When compared to "classier" Satanic contemporaries like "Rosemary's Baby" and "The Exorcist," Richard Donner's 1976 hit "The Omen" is the pulpiest of the lot. "The Omen" had no interest in the sexist panic of the former, nor the religious angst of the latter, settling instead in the realm of spooky thrillers, replete with cool kills, portentous Satanic language, and an awesome score (a score that brought Jerry Goldsmith his only Oscar). There's no ambiguity to "The Omen," being clear from the start that Gregory Peck and Lee Remick are indeed raising the Antichrist. The pop Satanism "The Omen" introduced into the lexicon has now become standard horror fare, and was even spoofed at length in the TV series "Good Omens."
"The Omen" spawned one okay sequel ("Damien: Omen II" in 1978), one risibly bad sequel ("The Final Conflict" in 1981), and one miserably bad sequel ("Omen IV: The Awakening" in 1991) before succumbing...

The First Omen director Arkasha Stevenson recently opened up about the possibility for more installments in the long-running horror franchise beyond the upcoming prequel.
Speaking with Screen Rant, Stevenson — who makes her feature directorial debut with The First Omen — revealed her hopes for the future of The Omen franchise. "There’s so many questions and so many adventures in the Omen universe, and it’s hard to work on a film and not think about all of these tangent stories, so yeah, there’s like a spiderweb in my brain," she shared, which strongly suggests that she might already have ideas for a sequel. "I hope the Omen franchise keeps expanding because it’s one of my favorites."

The trailer and synopsis for The First Omen suggest that the film will revive a storyline from Omen 3, potentially involving a satanic cult. The First Omen could improve upon Omen 3's execution by showcasing the power and resources of the Disciples of the Watch, turning them into a serious threat. With references to Catholicism, The First Omen has the opportunity to establish a hierarchy for the cult, similar to the Pope and cardinals, further emphasizing their evil desires.
This article contains discussions of infanticide.
The trailer and synopsis for The First Omen hint that the film will bring back an underutilized storyline from The Omen 3. One of the scariest movies of all time is the 1976 film The Omen. The film follows the family that raises a baby named Damien Thorne, who turns out to be the Antichrist. The Omen was so successful that it inspired 3 sequels and a reboot.

The First Omen is likely set in late 1970 or early 1971, as indicated by the premise and trailer. In 1976, audiences were introduced to Damien, a little kid with jet-black hair who may or may not be the Antichrist (spoiler: he is/was). In "The Omen," a diplomat (Gregory Peck) and his wife (Lee Remick) become the parents of a bouncing baby boy. But there's a twist: the diplomat is told that their actual baby died during childbirth. Rather than go home empty-handed, Peck's character is convinced to adopt another baby. He passes the child off as his own and neglects to tell his wife about the whole "our real kid died" thing. Men, am I right? Anyway, as it turns out, the child the couple welcomes into their home ends up being the spawn of Satan, and that could spell certain doom for us all.

Horror movie franchises are certainly not a rarity in the genre, with some of the biggest names in the horror game having multiple movies in their cinematic collection. While many of these long-running movie series have come to a conclusion, other franchises have promised a final film, going so far as to include that very word in the movie's title, only to renege on that promise and continue to add more entries following that "final" feature.
Although not contained solely to the horror genre, the prevalence of final chapters that do not actually conclude their franchises is higher when it comes to horror movies. Most of these horror movie franchises continued long beyond their claim to cap off their story, as is the case with Children of the Corn and Puppet Master, and one of the most popular horror properties is a repeat offender. With Saw X debuting in theaters...

An Academy Awards nominee for his performance in 1991’s Coen Brothers-directed film Barton Fink, veteran actor Michael Lerner has passed away at the age of 81 years old.

You’ll also remember Lerner from the 1993 episode of “Tales from the Crypt” titled ‘People Who Live in Brass Hearses,’ one of the show’s most memorable tales.
Later in the 1990s, Michael Lerner played Mayor Ebert in the big screen movie Godzilla (1998), a role he soon thereafter reprised in the animated “Godzilla: The Series.”
Lerner’s nearly 200 credits in film and television also include The Candidate, Reflections of Murder, The Missiles of October, Ruby and Oswald, The Postman Always Rings Twice, Strange Invaders, Eight Men Out, Harlem Nights, Newsies, Blank Check, Tale of the Mummy, My Favorite Martian,...

Six years have gone by since we first heard that 20th Century Fox was developing a prequel to the horror classic The Omen (watch it Here), a prequel that was to be titled The First Omen. Now going by the slightly shorter title First Omen, the project is still moving forward after Fox was acquired by Disney. A few months ago, it was announced that the film will be directed by Arkasha Stevenson – who has previously directed episodes of the genre shows Channel Zero, Legion, and Brand New Cherry Flavor. Now Deadline reports that First Omen has found its lead, as Nell Tiger Free of the Apple TV+ series Servant has signed on to star in the film. This will be her first leading role in a major studio film.

Mace Neufeld, the producer whose star-driven action films were blockbusters, died overnight in his sleep at his home in Beverly Hills, his family told Deadline. He was 93.
Neufeld’s hit films included The Omen and its sequels, The Equalizer pics and several adaptations of Tom Clancy-penned Jack Ryan thrillers including Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, The Sum of All Fears and The Hunt for Red October. He was Emmy-nominated for East of Eden and exec produced the Prime Video series Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan starring John Kasinski.
A family friend told Deadline that Neufeld was working on a third Equalizer pic and another Tom Clancy series for Prime Video at the time of his death.
Neufeld was at his zenith in the ’90s when, with partner Bob Rehme, he formed Neufeld/Rehme and produced a string of hit films such as Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games and Beverly Hills Cop III.
