Hugely underrated

I am surprised this excellent film seems to be so little known, especially considering the fine cast. Jeff Fahey gives a typically mysterious performance as the main character. Gabriel Damon gives an Oscar-worthy performance as his best friend Mikey. He is completely different than the character he portrayed in "Robocop 2", I'm surprised he did not become a major star like Edward Furlong. The locations and the abandoned steel mill are wonderful. J. T. Walsh was one of our best charcater actors. The story will keep you guessing until the end.

A muddled, self-indulgent film

"Iron Maze" has an intriguing script: the story of an attempted murder is unraveled through a series of conflicting flashbacks. Sadly, this script has been poorly directed, poorly photographed and poorly acted. The result is a muddled, unpleasant and self-indulgent film. Jeff Fahey is typically obnoxious, while Bridget Fonda looks pretty and enigmatic, but she doesn't really have to act to achieve those qualities; her actual performance is closer to a zombie than a living human being. And J.T. Walsh plays (surprise!) an officer of the law. The movie also has xenophobic political implications ("those evil Japanese!"), which it tries to reverse in the final scene. (*1/2)

Total waste of time .......

An attempted murder of a Japanese businessman in a dying Pennsylvania steel town had plenty of promise. The red herrings are introduced at a rapid rate, like the disgruntled steel workers who don't want an amusement park taking the place of their union jobs, or the town rebel played by Jeff Fahey wanting to run off with the businessman's wife, or the wife herself, Bridget Fonda, wanting her husband out of the picture. Different characters tell police captain, J.T.Walsh, their version of the murder attempt in flashbacks. If all this sounds confusing, it is. "Iron Maze" is also convoluted, pointless, ridiculous, and a total waste of time. - MERK

Underrated, intriguing mystery

"Iron Maze" is a little-publicized mystery drama from 1991, good for fans of conflicting flashbacks, lies, half-truths and partial truths. Though technically faulty (with often echoing sound, and frequent boom-mike appearances in the frame), it is thematically challenging, with a puzzle-like structure that rewards attention, as people give different accounts of the same events which sometimes confirm, sometimes deny, and sometimes complete the missing pieces of each other. The film's main setting, an abandoned steel mill in the middle of nowhere, is an unusal and evocative one. **1/2 out of 4.

Excellent thriller.

I really liked this compelling thriller, full of twists and turns and keeping me guessing as to who was telling the truth. Good performances from Jeff Fahey, Bridget Fonda and J T Walsh. The Iron Maze refers to a disused steel works that a Japanese business man intends to turn into a theme park for children in this neglected area. The thrills start when Fahey is attracted to the business man's wife, Fonda, and the inevitable two's company, three's a crowd problem takes over. Kept me guessing until the end. Is Fahey a brutal thug who rapes Fonda or really a nice guy with only romantic intentions. The all tell different stories which is what held my attention.
