A new "town of the crazies"!

In this Philippines-shot junkfest, Julia Montgomery portrays Sarah, an ambassador's daughter. It seems the country is in the midst of chaos and revolution (is it meant to be the Philippines?) and some armed marauders kill her beloved father and spirit her away into their terrorist training camp. The leader of these supposed revolutionaries is one Sanchez (Ruel Vernal), a sadistic taskmaster that beats, tortures, rapes and brainwashes Sarah. But there is more to the story, amazingly enough...

Meanwhile, Rick (Memel) is a former soldier who just wants to escape his violent past and find peace. He lives with his wife on a tranquil rice farm and that's where he wants to stay. Unfortunately, when Rick's wife meets her end at the hands of Sanchez's comrades during yet another violent flare-up in the country, Rick and his stonewashed denim jacket vow revenge. Rick and Sarah team up (despite some reluctance at first, naturally) to defeat the Sanchez gang because they both have their own reasons for doing so. But will they ever achieve their sought-after savage justice? Sure, the movie is dumb and low-budget-looking, and it has all the silly blow-ups, laughable dubbing, and machine gun shooting you would expect, but what did you honestly think this would be? But it's not all brainless pap (just about 99%), because the movie takes an unexpected left turn when Sarah and Rick go to a Shaolin temple to pick up some monks to help them on their revenge mission. Seems like the obvious thing to do. They want the whole temple, but the Master says "you may pick five". It's not explained why. Then Sarah, Rick and the five monks enter an abandoned city with spray paint everywhere. It is run by the midget Aldo (Hero Bautista), who resembles a carnival barker. The town is populated by children in strange, half-heartedly applied face paint. Think Gymkata's (1985) "Town of the Crazies" meets an Italian post-apocalyptic film. Strange indeed. Naturally it all comes to a head with the final showdown in the time-tested abandoned warehouse.

Despite the fact that Willie Williams is on hand, and Julia Montgomery is reasonably attractive, and the mastermind behind it all is legendary Australian producer Antony Ginnane, the truth is that Savage Justice's run-of-the-mill stupidity is an obstacle it never really overcame.

    atrocious

Sarah (Revenge of the Nerds' very own Julia Montgomery), the daughter of a wealthy American diplomat waits for the right time to get revenge on Sanchez, a no-good revolutionary who had killed her parents before kidnapping and raping her. She gets help from a Rick, an ex-Green Beret who reluctantly fights by her side after his wife dies from Sanchez and his men storm a nearby town.

One gets the feeling that this film wouldn't have been released (or made, it seems to have been made earlier than 1988) if it wasn't for the quasi-fame that the beautiful Mrs. Montgomery had gotten from the Nerds movie. Because other than her dubious 'star power' this film has nothing else going for it. The action sequences fall flat, the acting is atrocious, the plot is asinine, and as the minutes seem to endlessly tick by, you'll left to wander why you even bothered watching this piece of junk in the first place.

    Ramboline

Sarah, the daughter of the American ambassador in an unnamed Asian country, ends up in the hands of rebel leader Sanchez during a revolution, who forces her to live among them for a year. Sarah finally manages to escape through a jealous rival. Now she's acquiring weapons and helpers, and after a brief stint with kung fu monks, she's ready to get her revenge on Sanchez with a clever plan: frontal assault.

A funny little film about a talentless blonde Ramboline, which was shot in 1988 for a handful of dollars in the Philippines. I first watched it on VHS tape 30 years ago. Due to its naivety, especially in the fight scenes - even the Buddhist monks are happily shooting around with machine guns - it has a certain entertainment factor. But I can't say that watching it a second time this year was a must.
