10 Shonen Anime That Treat Their Female Characters Right
Image
Female characters don’t always need to be ultra-powerful or lead the plot to its conclusion; they just need to be written well and treated right. Nobody wants to be immediately reminded that a character is ‘female’ through fan service or token feminism. Despite shonen anime’s horrible track record with female characters, there are many series that give fair treatment to the female cast.

From the primarily female cast of Claymore to Kakegurui’s fierce protagonist, here are 10 shonen anime that portray female characters in a well-rounded manner without indulging in fan service or using them as plot devices.

1. Hunter x Hunter Shizuku attacks Baise in Hunter x Hunter | Credits: Studio Madhouse

Hunter x Hunter doesn’t have enough female characters, but the few that it does are exemplary. Yoshihiro Togashi doesn’t follow a definite formula, and every character is distinct. For instance, Machi is cautious, Shizuku is nonchalant,...

Monster Hunter Wilds' Big Update Reveals Fixes For "Mostly Negative" Version
Image
The next major update for Monster Hunter Wilds is coming very soon, and it's bringing some hefty additions and changes. Mh Wilds's reception has been inconsistent, especially from PC players, who have found the game to have numerous performance issues, resulting in a "mostly negative" reception on Steam. Posted on the official Monster Hunter website, the patch notes for Version 1.021.00 have been posted, and it's a sizable 2 Gb update. Adjustments will be made to almost every weapon, some network and performance issues will be addressed, tempered versions of nine monsters will begin to appear in the wild at Hunter Rank 100, and a lot more. The update will be available tomorrow, August 13.

Monster Hunter Wilds 1.021 Update Patch Notes Reveal Big Fixes Fewer Crashes, Text Issues, & More

KPop Demon Hunters Is the First One to Dethrone Beyonce’s Destiny’s Child in 24 Years
Image
Continuing its record-breaking streak, Netflix’s animated hit, KPop Demon Hunters, has now dethroned Destiny’s Child, with its standout track ‘Golden‘ soaring to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. This achievement overtakes Destiny’s Child’s untouchable milestone that stood for 24 years.

The last girl group song to top the chart was Bootylicious, from Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams’ Destiny’s Child third studio album, Survivor. Now, more than two decades later, the trio’s historic position has been replaced by a fictional act performed by Ejae, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami for the Netflix sensation.

Additionally, the song also made history as the first No. 1 Hot 100 hit by a female K-pop group on the chart. The milestone comes on the heels of the song topping the Billboard 200 and breaking numerous other records. The film’s unprecedented success on Netflix has stunned audiences and industry alike, cementing KPop Demon Hunters as a global cultural phenomenon.

Tyler Childers Takes Big Risks and Reaps Huge Rewards on ‘Snipe Hunter’
Image
Tyler Childers has always seemed comfortable in his contradictions. He’s an old-soul traditionalist whose throwback ballads regularly go TikTok viral, a recovering alcoholic who still releases some of the 21st century’s best drinking music, a stadium-sized star who hasn’t performed his most popular song in a half-decade.

For the past 10 years, Childers has been preaching his righteous Kentucky gospel (see “Long Violent History,” written in the wake of George Floyd protests). Part of that project is showing that, in contrast to how it’s typically portrayed, Childers...

Tyler Childers ‘Snipe Hunter’ Review: A Profound Reflection on the Human Condition
Image
Tyler Childers’s seventh studio album, Snipe Hunter, homes in on a set of seemingly disparate topics—religion and our relationship to nature—alongside more personal issues like the singer’s alcoholism and life as a musician. Often tuneful, sometimes plaintive, these 13 songs are as electrifying and affecting as they are profound.

Snipe Hunter’s most persistent theme is the supposed dominance of humans over nature. On the album’s opening track, “Eatin’ Big Time,” Childers’s voice, sounding almost enraged, is at odds with his words as he describes shooting and carving up livestock and the domestic comforts that separate him from the animals. The contrast between the vocal delivery and the lyrics suggests an ambivalence about the narrator’s impact on the world.

Later, “Watch Out” positions nature as a mystery to be managed with the help of family and friends, while “Down Under” uses it as a...

Supernatural’s Queer Coding Was Never Subtle Especially With One Demon
Image
Supernatural’s lore is brimming with covert and overt subtext. Over the years, we’ve seen many cameos, supernatural crossovers, and new characters. But one integral character continues to spark speculation to date: Yellow Eyes, aka Azazel. While the show never officially confirmed his character was queer-coded, an undercurrent rooted in subtle onscreen chemistry and ambiguous motivations that defied labeling could always be sensed.

Azazel gave us some of the most iconic Supernatural demon scenes, and as we revisit the series, it becomes even clearer that Yellow Eyes definitely gave off queer vibes. And with the show’s history of queer subtext, it’s not too hard to believe the writers intentionally blurred lines to keep audiences guessing. This feature will delve into Azazel’s depiction as a character who is saturated with subtext that resonates with LGBTQ+ readings.

13 comic book characters who would totally run a Squid Game competition
Image
What if comic book characters held their own Squid Game? Would they give out prizes at the end, or would it conclude with disappointment and (worse) death? For example, the Viltrumites' contest would be a challenge of strength, with the prize being the ability to continue living. With that in mind, here are ten comic book characters who would (for better or worse) run a Squid Game competition.

Aaron Taylor Johnson in Columbia Pictures and Marvel Kraven The Hunter Kraven the Hunter

Kraven would make this a tournament to see who’s worthy to fight him, but mask this as something for money. This would probably infuriate the winner. Depending on who won determines if this works in Kraven's or his opponent's favor.

13 Years Later, and Supernatural Still Owes Us An Explanation For That Madison Scene
Image
There is one Supernatural episode that still packs quite a punch even after thirteen years since its original airing date on the CW. Heart was the seventeenth episode of Supernatural’s sophomore season and is remembered even to this day on account of the high emotional pitch hit by the performances of the leading pair of actors.

The reason why the show still owes us an explanation for the scene involving Madison is that we can’t fathom the reason why Sam had to put Madison down. The scene was dramatically moving as Sam had to swallow down his love for Madison and do what was necessary to save the lives of others involved.

Apart from Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, guest star Emmanuelle Vaugier delivered a top-notch performance in her role of Madison, a lawyer’s assistant who assumed immense importance during the episode.

Vin Diesel's Critically-Panned 2015 Movie Has Become A Streaming Hit On Netflix
Vin Diesel
Vin Diesel’s 2015 fantasy-action movie The Last Witch Hunter has surged into Netflix’s feature-length top five in the US. The critically panned film starring Diesel in the titular role has become a major streaming hit a decade after taking a respectable $147 million at the box office. The movie’s Netflix success comes despite it being one of the worst-reviewed releases of Vin Diesel’s career.

The platform first dropped The Last Witch Hunter, which features Diesel's most powerful character, on June 16, 2025, for its streaming debut, nine and a half years after it was first released in cinemas. Diesel’s movie going straight into Netflix’s American top 10 movies chart is good news for its prospective sequel, The Last Witch Hunter 2, which is still in development hell several years after the actor first confirmed this follow-up project.

Vin Diesel’s Critically Panned Fantasy Epic With Elijah Wood Lands on Streaming as Fans Await a Sequel
Image
When you think of Vin Diesel, chances are theFast & Furious franchise is the first thing that comes to mind. The billion-dollar juggernaut provided the vehicle with which he rode to superstardom, and while it's often hard to separate Diesel from Dom Toretto, fast cars are not all that the actor is about. Fun Trivia? Diesel is a longtime Dungeons & Dragonsfan, and he even starred in a fantasy action epic based on a character he created for the game. That film, The Last Witch Hunter, flew under the radar for many casual fans, largely due to its unfair critical reception. The few who saw it found it entertaining enough, and now, amidst whispers of a sequel, The Last Witch Hunter is set for greater visibility as it's found a new home on Netflix.

The Last Witch Hunter, released in 2015, was written by Cory Goodman, Matt Sazama, and Burk Sharples, who based...

Beloved 'James Bond' Star Offers Perfect Advice to Daniel Craig's Replacement
Image
The James Bond franchise is undergoing arguably its biggest shake-up in history. As well as Daniel Craig being replaced as the eponymous spy, the franchise is under new ownership, with Amazon MGM Studios having bought the rights to the IP earlier this year. With the next movie currently in development, all eyes are on who will play the next James Bond. Every fan has their favorite pick. One fan who knows a thing or two about being a good 007 is Pierce Brosnan, who played the iconic character four times on the big screen, and the Irish star has defined what makes an actor worthy of taking on the mantle.

During an interview with MovieWeb's George Edelman, Pierce Brosnan discussed the future of James Bond and what the next actor to play the role will need in order to succeed. Much like Bond himself, Brosnan's advice was no-nonsense and to the point.

He spends almost as much time watching movies as he does making them, maybe even more. His Letterboxd profile is filled with a flurry of activity, suggesting the filmmaker rarely has time to come up for air. He keeps a list of his favorite horror films on the platform, and spoiler alert, one of them is now available to stream on Hulu. 'Madame Web' Star Dakota Johnson Says Marvel Superhero Flop Wasn't Her Fault
Image
Dakota Johnson reflects on what went wrong with Madame Web, the 2024 Sony Pictures Marvel adaptation. When the plans for Madame Web were first announced, the film faced much trepidation. It was another in Sony Pictures' attempts to make a Spider-Man spin-off shared universe without the webhead. The film's trailer became widely mocked, and when the movie opened in theaters on Feb. 14, 2024, it became a box office and critical flop. It was only saved from the embarrassment of being the lowest-grossing Spider-Man spin-off thanks to Kraven the Hunter.

Speaking with People to promote her latest film, Materialist, Johnson talked about what happened on Madame Web. "It wasn’t my fault," Johnson said, laughing alongside Materialist director Celine Song. Johnson went on, hinting that the Madame Web film she signed on for was not the finished product and that it was tampered with by studio executives. Johnson said:

"There’s this...

The Book Of Boba Fett Star Confirms Status For The Mandalorian And Grogu Movie
Image
A major star from The Book of Boba Fett – and the wider Mandalorian era – has confirmed whether they’ll make their big-screen Star Wars debut in next year’s The Mandalorian and Grogu. Seven years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premiered, Lucasfilm is hedging its bets and using its most successful live-action TV streaming series to push the franchise back into cinemas. The result is The Mandalorianand Grogu, which will reunite viewers with Din Djarin and Grogu after the events of The Mandalorian season 3.

Of course, Din’s and Grogu’s story is inextricably intertwined with another Mandalorian-era show, The Book of Boba Fett, which saw Temuera Morrison’s Boba Fett and Ming-Na Wen’s Fennec Shand take over Jabba the Hutt’s palace and criminal empire on Tatooine. Speaking with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley at the Karate Kid: Legends NYC premiere, Ming-Na Wen confirmed whether bounty hunter...

James Cameron Was Blown Away by ‘The Mandalorian’ Star Who Rarely Gets Any Credit Because of Pedro Pascal
Image
When it first came out back in 2019, The Mandalorian proved to be among the finer additions to the Star Wars lore, perfectly brought to the screens by Jon Favreau. Led by Pedro Pascal as the titular character, it has earned remarkable praise from fans and critics worldwide. In fact, even James Cameron couldn’t help but praise it.

Yet, while Cameron became one of the people shell-shocked by the cast’s performance, he was actually the most blown away by the one star who rarely gets any credit because Pascal seems to take home all the acclaim, being the face of the main character. This one star was none other than the one in Din Djarin’s suit, Brendan Wayne.

‘Real Fan’ Backlash: Borderlands Review Bombing Continues Despite Pitchford’s Apology
Image
Gearbox Software’s highly anticipated Borderlands 4 has yet to hit store shelves, but it’s already knee deep in controversy. Last week, Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox Software, picked a fight against the entire gaming community by saying that “real fans” would buy the game regardless of a $80 price tag.

This seems to have triggered a whole chain of reactions because the entire Borderlands trilogy has gotten review-bombed on Steam. But not just because of his words. Publisher Take-Two apparently made changes to the End User License Agreement for the games that didn’t sit well with fans. What is the next move for Take-Two and Gearbox?

Borderlands 4 has started a whole mess for the franchise

It all began last week when we saw Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox, respond to a fan expressing concern about a potential $80 price tag for Borderlands 4. Pitchford defended the potential price tag by saying, “If you’re a real fan,...

Highest 2 Lowest (2025) ‘Cannes’ Movie Review: Spike Lee Respectfully Reenvisions a Kurosawa Classic With Strong New York Flavor
Image
Needless to say, remaking one of the greatest films of all time by arguably the greatest filmmaker of all time for an American crowd is a recipe for probable cinematic sacrilege. Add to this the fact that the American doing the remaking happens to be a director who’s already famously desecrated one classic of Asian cinema, and the prospects for Spike Lee’s “Highest 2 Lowest” appear rather dim from the outset. Fortunately, while his rehash of “Oldboy” was the work of a man clearly indifferent to his product, his reinterpretation of “High and Low” indicates a man who knew what made the original work, and what else could benefit from a modern update.

In a sense, “Highest 2 Lowest” can very well describe the trajectory of Lee’s entire career—a man who, over the course of his storied history, has made unimpeachable classics in between baffling misfires—but through it all,...

The cash injection was part of a plan to expand internationally. Azzani, a 20-year industry veteran, led Prime Video between 2021 and 2025, having previously joined as Country Manager for Audible. Starring two-time Academy Award nominee Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) and Billy Barratt (Kraven the Hunter), Bring Her Back follows two siblings who uncover a terrifying ritual at the secluded home of their new foster mother.

Debuting on Rotten Tomatoes with a 95%, Rocco T. Thompson from Slant Magazine says Bring Her Back "has a white-hot nerve of pain running inside it that burns right through the screen." Ross Bonaime from Collider echoes those sentiments, while also calling the Australian film one of the best horror flicks of the year:

"Bring Her Back captures the darkness and fear of losing someone, all while making one of the year's best horror films.
