One man army known as Amitabh Bachchan

During his heyday, Amitabh Bachchan was so much popular with so much positive energy flowing in and spreading out of his personality that he was able to pull the movies on the box office all alone, demonstrating himself as bigger than several other aspects of the movie including the story, thus gaining the title of Big B. For many such movies made during a decade spanning from the mid seventies to the mid eighties, he was one man army, capable of winning the battle of the box office on his own. One such movie starring him is Khuddar (1982).

Khuddar (a man of self-respect) is the story of three brothers the eldest of whom is Hari (Sanjeev Kumar) who loves his motherless younger brothers very much but his wife Seema (Tanuja) does not like them and therefore, does not want them to live in her house. When Hari moves out for some time to study law, she expels both of them from the house. Now these two hapless and resourceless lads have to struggle to survive in this cruel world.

The elder of the two grows up as Govind (Amitabh Bachchan) who is fondly called as Chhotu Ustaad by all and sundry (very few people know his real name) and Rajesh (Vinod Mehra) fondly called as Raaja. Now Govind aka Chhotu Ustaad makes it the aim of his life to enable Rajesh aka Raaja to climb the heights of success and prosperity in his life. He works hard as a taxi driver to earn enough money for this purpose, cherishing his dream to see his younger brother to become big in his life. But ! But Raesh gets spoiled due to bad company. And a baddie Bansi (Prem Chopra) takes advantage of this spoilage of his. Though Rajesh is able to get married to Manju (Bindiya Goswaami), the daughter of a rich businessman Mr. Varma (Pinchoo Kapoor), he leaves his brother's house and moves to his in-laws' place. Now Govind is heartbroken only to find some solace from the family of Rahim Chacha (A.K. Hangal) who has stood by him and Raesh since their childhood days and Mary (Parveen Baabi), the love of his life.

As destiny has its own way, one day Mr. Varma, the father-in-law of Rajesh is murdered and Govind is arrested for this murder. When he is brought in the court for the trial, both himself and the person sitting on the chair of the judge are startled like anything to see each other. Why ? Because the judge is none else but Hari only, the elder brother of Govind and Rajesh. Needless to say that Hari resigns from his post of the judge to act as the defense counsel of his younger brother and finally succeeds in unmasking the real culprit and getting Govind exonerated after the courtroom drama.

The biggest USP and the biggest ingredient of the entertainment embedded in this movie is Amitabh Bachchan only. Though the movie features stars like Sanjeev Kumar, Tanuja, Parveen Baabi, Vinod Mehra, Bindiya Goswaami etc., finally it's AB only who turns this ordinary script into an extra-ordinarily movie which none can regret after watching. AB has shown every colour of his acting talent in this movie - comedy, emotion, action and what not ! His comic timing is so perfect that even the seasoned comedians may be envious of that. Despite getting able support from all others, he has carried the entire movie on his shoulders. The title is meant for his character only and he only is the heart and soul of this movie. I doubt whether any other hero would have been able to do justice to the role of Govind aka Chhotu Ustaad which appears to be tailor-made for Big B.

Rajesh Roshan has prepared very good music for Khuddar whose songs are very popular even today. Angrezi Mein Kehte Hain Ki I Love You, Mach Gaya Shor Saari Nagari Re, Hatt Ja Baajoo Nahin To Uda Doonga, Disco 82 etc. are fondly listened to and hummed by the music lovers of today's generation also. Disco 82 was prepared keeping in view the year of release of this movie, i.e., 1982 but it thrills and moves the listener's feet even in 2014. In addition to the songs mentioned supra, the album contains one inspiring song - Oonche Neeche Raaste Aur Manzil Teri Door as well as one emotional song - Maa Ka Pyar, Behan Ka Pyar also.

Technically the movie is perfect in all the respects and despite its excessive length, the editing job has been done so skilfully that the grip of the narrative on the audience is seldom loosened. Despite the predictability of the story, the viewer keeps on watching and enjoying the happenings on the screen without burdening his mind. There is no song which irritates by appearing in-between because it becomes a part of the smooth flow of the story only.

Khuddar was a commercial success and rightly so because it's like a spicy dish with no spice being high or low than required in quantum. The mix of the regular entertainment formulae is the optimum here and there is a balance in all the aspects of the story. I advise all the movie buffs to watch it without any prejudice and allow themselves to be entertained by the one and only Amitabh Bachchan.

      Khud-daar

Hari is forced to marry Seema, who dislikes his stepbrothers, Govind and Rajesh. When he goes to Mumbai, she displaces them to become beggars. However, destiny reunites them with Hari in a courtroom.

A lesser known Bachchan entry when compared to Deewar, Sholay etc., but not any less entertaining than the ones released in his heyday. Between 1974 and 1983 Amitabh was a force to reckon, and was setting the box office on fire with his fabulous screen presence, superb dialogue and style, and he does the same here in this entertaining film that has a winning formula of an engaging story, good songs, fights, comedy and intrigue in the courtroom. The other cast members do fine as well, so does Basanti the taxi car!

An entertaining lost-and-found tale with an excellent court sequence in the end

So, another lost-and-found story starring Bachchan but much better done. Amitabh Bachchan stars as the principled taxi driver who takes care of his younger brother's future. The two of them left their home when they were kids as their vicious sister in-law was mistreating them while their older brother was away. A typical story, indeed, but the development is really very good. Bachchan does a very good job in a role that camr shortly before he started looking too old for the parts he subsequently played. Here he is real and funny and very believable. His leading lady, Parveen Babi, is beautiful and very funny as the beautiful Mary who moves from scoundrel to warm and caring companion. Vinod Mehra is good as the brother but less convincing playing the negative shades of his part as he still gives this vibe of being too decent. Prem Chopra is well cast as the villain, and so is Mehmood who plays his regular comic part with great flair. Then you have Sanjeev Kumar who really was always in his element and this film is no exception. While Khu-Daar has its moments where it doesn't really seem to be going anywhere, it is totally redeemed in its last portions, where it turns into a captivating courtroom drama, which is tense and really well written (assuming it's original). Kudos to the writers for handling this part so well. And kudos to the music director for nicely composed songs. "Disco '82" is a classic and my favourite. Really a nice film, entertaining.

Amitabh Bachchan shines in this predictable lost and found tale!!

Khud-Daar is an action drama film directed by Late Ravi Tandon. The film stars Late Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Late Parveen Babi, Late Vinod Mehra, Prem Chopra, Bindiya Goswami with Late Mehmood and Tanuja in extended cameos.

This film can be best describe as a cocktail of everything that was prevalent in late 70s and early 80s, with lost and found plot mixed with comedy, action, self redemption of the wrong ones and happy union. The film has nothing new or exciting to offer but the film was still successful mainly because of the super stardom of Amitabh Bachchan, the ensemble star-cast and melodious songs.

The plot of the film and it's execution is predictable and average, as mentioned above we have seen such plots in many 70s and 80s films. Screenplay of the film is purely predictable, plain and doesn't excites much.

Acting is good and all the actors were great in their part with special mention for Sanjeev Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan. Climax of the film was also predictable and gives a happy ending.

A must watch for Amitabh Bachchan fans and for others can watch once for the melodious songs.

      Classic

This movie of Amitabh's is undoubtely one of his classics though it is not as famous as other Bachchan classics as Deewaar, Trishul, Kabhi Kabhie, Sholay, Shaan, Shakti, Satte pe Satta, Kasme Vaade or others. This is unfortunate cause the movie is very good. Produced by Mehmood's brother Anwar Ali and directed by Lekh Tandon with a classic score by Rajesh Roshan this movie has songs by Kishore Kumar, Lata, Amit Kumar. All the songs are classics like Angrezi Mein Kehte Hain Ke I Love You, Mach Gaya Shor, Disco 82, Oonche Neeche Raaste, Hatja Baju and Maa Ka Pyar (not in the movie). The film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Tanuja, Parveen babi, Vinod Mehra, Bindiya Goswami, Prem Chopra, Ramesh Deo, Mehmood, AK Hangal and others. The story revolves around 3 brothers played by Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh and Vinod. Sanjeeb is the older brother who dotes on his 2 young stepbrothers. When he marries Tanuja she gets jealous of their bond and the 2 younger brothers run away from home. Amitabh sacrifies everything to get Vinod an education and it seems that everything will turn out right. Then Vinod gets to know rich girl Bindiya Goswami and Amitabh's world falls apart when his brother chooses money over him. Amitabh also meets his older brother by now who is a judge but Sanjeev doesn't recognise him though there is a friendship between the 2 older brothers. Watch when a murder is committed, Amitabh is arrested and tried in court where Sanjeev is the judge. All the performances are first rate. Vinod, Bindiya, AK Hangal. But the movie belongs to Sanjeev Kumar (though in a supportung role) and Amitabh, the main character. These movies don't get made anymore. Amitabh can make you laugh by just saying " yes" (in the Can You Tell Me What Time It Is -scene" and he can make you cry with his taxi. A great film you must watch!

Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar were the only plaback singers of this film. This is the first and last film which had story, screenplay & dialoges by Kader Khan. In 1982 after this film, Kader Khan was going to make debut as director with a film tittled. Jahiil, staring Amitabh Bachchan & Jaya Pradha and the film was to be written, produced & directed by Kader Khan with music by Kalyanji-Anandji and this film was to start after Coolie and Kader Khan had already made arrangements to start shooting, as Amitabh was to start shooting after completing the shooting of Coolie in Banglore, but then the. Coolie accident and. Jahiil was not made.
