"Wesele" is a magnificent picture made by the greatest Polish director, Wajda who was given honorary Oscar in 2000. It is made with passion and great aritistic vision like a colourful painting. The screenplay is based on the drama written by Stanis³aw Wyspiañski, one of the greatest Polish writers, who lived in Cracow at the end of 19th century and who participated in wedding which he described in his play. The film is excelent, thanks to the cinematography by Witold Sobociñski, music by Stanis³aw Radwan, and great actors like Daniel Olbrychski (Bridegroom), Franciszek Pieczka (Czepiec) and others.
If Peter Fonda had some how managed to make The Trip under communist oppression, and if he feared the wrath of his ancestors, and the hand of the Red Army, instead of the bourgeois middle class; if a wedding party was as much a life passage in American as is the drug party, these two would have been the same movie.
Turn of the century in Cracow and a wedding celebration takes place. The groom, a noble poet, weds a peasant girl and the ingredients are right for a mixture of social indifferences. After a night of dancing, drinking and talking themselves to stupidity, they reunite for a surreal ending, which is the highlight of the film.

- WissenswertesThe famous rumor has it that during a film festival Andrzej Wajda was approached by the legendary director Elia Kazan, who asked him where he had found such a wonderful writer. Wajda was amused because the play "Wesele" is one of immortal classics of Polish literature, well-known to every school kid in Poland, but considered difficult to appreciate by foreigners. It was written by the renowned Cracovian painter and writer Stanislaw Wyspianski in 1901.
