Laurent Ségur (William Holden) has told his son, Pascal, that he can pick where they vacation this year. Oddly, the boy picks Corsica, as he wants to go camping there. Now, I have nothing against Corsica...it just doesn't seem like the usual place for kids to want to go. However, soon after arriving, a plane explodes near them...releasing radiation. The boy is contaminated and will die within a few months, so Laurent decides to try to make that time as good as it can be...and that means indulging the child's every whim and pretending that everything will be just fine.
Despite the title and the film taking place around Christmas, this is NOT a holiday film nor one you'd want to show your family to celebrate the holiday. No, it's incredibly depressing...sort of an anti-holiday film in many ways. Now this is not to say it's bad...it's very well acted.
This is the sort of movie that you really need to think twice about before watching. If you're struggling with depression or have lost a child, for example, I'd avoid the movie...as it's grim to say the least. If you think you can handle this sort of thing, then by all means try. Just be prepared...it's far from fun viewing.

- Alternative VersionenTwo versions of the film were made and released: (1) The far more accessible continental European cut, "L'abre de Noël", where William Holden's English dialogue was dubbed over, and all the European actors spoke in native tongues; (2) and an alternate international English language cut, "The Christmas Tree", where a majority of the cast spoke phonetic English before being dubbed over by voice actors.
