Barsaat (1949)
Pran and Gopal are traveling in a convertible in the Indian countryside but the car breaks down. Near Satpur they come across a village and rest there for a few days. While there Gopal meets with Neela, while Pran meets with Reshma, and the couples fall in love with each other. Gopal, who fancies himself a Casanova of sorts, has no qualms whatsoever of leaving Neela and going out with other women, while Pran is unable to get Reshma out of his mind. The two leave, promising to return during the monsoon season. While in the city, Pran is unable to make up his mind about returning to Reshma, and Gopal prefers the company of two dancing girls, Lily and Ruby, not knowing that Reshma is shortly to be married to Bholu, while Neela, on the verge of killing herself, is anxiously awaiting Gopal's return. Watch what happens when Bholu takes Reshma to the city.

          Barsaat (1949) - 70%

Not One Of The Best Works Of Raj Kapoor By Any Standard, But Still A Fine Watch... "Barsaat" Has All The Ingredients Of A True-Blue Romantic Musical, Including Chartbuster Soundtrack (Shankar-Jaikishan), Beautiful Locations (Kashmir), Memorable Performances (Kapoor, Nargis, Prem Nath, Nimmi) & A Heartfelt Story (Power Of Love), But What It Lacks Is An Engaging Screenplay, Which Prevents It From Becoming An Evergreen Classic Like Awaara, Shree 420, Sangam Or Mera Naam Joker, But As I Said Earlier... The Plusses In The Film Majorly Overpower The Negatives & Leave You Satisfied In The End.

          Golden Rain

This was from the early days of Bollywood, when the film industry was just beginning to be just that – and one of the first golden age classics. Barsaat was so popular that skinny Raj Kapoor established RK Studios on the back of its success, so without this film it might have been a different movie story in the 1950's.

How to sum up a 3 hour film … the famous love triangle – 2 brothers, Kapoor serious and Prem Nath out for a good time fall in love with the same woman, the beautiful 20 year old Nargis. The relationships have their ups and downs but ultimately alas! Cut into this are some iconic images of Nargis and many mesmerising songs from Shankar-Jaikashan in their debut, apparently all of them sung by Lata – although they let Mukesh in for a few minutes with Chhod Gaye Balaam (with some especially lovely moody photography here starting with Kapoor brooding at the piano). Favourite bit: Ab Mera Kaun Sahara with Nargis in a wistful and sorrowful vein and Lata displaying a marvellously steady vocal control.

If you have tears prepare to shed them at this unless you have a heart of stone or have seen too many modern movies! I've not seen either Barsaat 1995 or 2005 but I don't think they're re-makes, in any case I shouldn't have thought they'd be anywhere near as good as this was.

Exaggerated & melodramatic exploration of love vs. lust despite fabulous performances.

Story: Senseless & Predictable The film tells two love stories: Pran and Reshma's true love, and Gopal and Neela's tumultuous relationship.

The story was predictable right from the interval. The story was unnecessary made emotional. In many parts the story didn't made any sense, just unnecessary overdramatic scenes. Story had a message of love over lust.

Screenplay: Overdramatic & Slow The screenplay was too sluggish, some scenes could be trimmed. The major drawback was too much amplification of senseless story. Some scenes had songs going together with story.

Characters: Average Reshma: She was a simple mountain girl who fell for Pran. She was shown very innocent who loved pran unconditionally.

Pran: He was a rich person who loved Reshma unconditionally.

Gopal: He was rich man who just wanted lust from women. As the film progressed his character changed.

Neelam: She was a mountain girl who was madly in love with Gopal. Her character was totally senseless & illogical.

          Rest all characters were irrelevant.

          Dialogues: Good

Performances: Good Raj kapoor: He did a fabulous performance especially dialogue delivery & expressions were superb.

Nargis: She did a impressive performance especially in emotional scenes aced in expressions.

Prem nath: He did a good performance.

Nimmi: She did her part well.

Rest all actors had a small role.

Direction: Good The direction was superb. Some scenes were shot beautifully.

          Editing: Satisfactory

Music and BGM: Good All. Songs were melodious & BGM was superb.

          Production value: To the point

Ideology: The writer aimed to convey the message that love triumphs over lust, but in doing so, some scenes were exaggerated and overly sentimental, while others lacked logical coherence. The narrative's emotional resonance was amplified at the expense of realism, resulting in an inconsistent viewing experience.

Final verdict: The film had a senseless story & sluggish overdramatic screenplay with good performances & dialogues to balance. Director had shot some beautiful locations along with melodious songs.

          0.25- Story 0.25- Screenplay 1- Performances 0.25- Characters 0.25- Editing 0.5- Direction 1- Music and BGM 0.5- Production value.

          Displaying the power of love

This film shows that if means is love, the end is life. If means is flirt, the end is death. If you face natural tragedy in love, you will finally unite. If you create a tragedy by yourselves, you will separate forever. The film's title 'Barsaat' is very appropriate as all main characters in the film cry in a specific time period. Also, Reshma is lost in river water which is filled by rain. The song 'Mujhe Kisi Se Pyaar Ho Gayaa' and 'Jiya Beqarar' are the most attractive songs. Shankar-Jaikishan have created their first best soundtrack in this movie. Nimmi had a huge role in the beginning of the film but Nargis overtook in the later part of the film. Both Raj Kapoor and PremNath have also done very well.
