Her Lucky Night

Martha O'Driscoll can't find a good man. Acting on the advice of an astrologer, she buys two tickets to a movie and throws one away. Real estate mogul George Barbier shows up. He hires her to vet his hayseed nephew, Noah Beery Jr., who keeps fouling up. Fortunately Miss O'Driscoll's friends, the Andrews Sisters, are on hand to sing a few songs at night clubs and while pretending to be Barbier's servants.

It's a quick second feature meant to round out the Andrews sisters' baker's dozen of movies for Universal. Clyde Bruckman writes a few skits to fill in the comedy. This got Universal sued by Harold Lloyd for stealing from his pictures (which Bruckman had worked on), costing them $100,000 when the court found for Lloyd.

It's fairly silly, and fairly typical of the lightweight fluff that Universal specialized in at this time. The rise in movie attendance during the Second World War probably made this marginally profitable, even with the law suits, but the downturn in attendance would soon render fluff like this unprofitable, even for the most tight-fisted for the majors.
