The Stork Pays Off

In the old days, Victory Jory was a beer baron whose cohort succeeded by bluffing the competition. Now he runs a series of businesses, based on his laundry: he allows his customers to build up huge back bills, and then takes them over: laundries, night clubs, barber shops. Now he's just taken over the Storks Club. But it's actually a day nursery run by Rochelle Hudson.

Yes, it's a comedy, and a pretty low-brow comedy, with Jory totally out of his depth, rushing through his lines because he knows how stupid the situations are. It's not all bad. Maxie 'Slapsie' Rosenbloom plays one of his assistants; the fact that he's called "Brains" gives you an idea of what the people in charge think is funny, but his constant stream of malapropisms hit fairly often. Other well-remembered player (by me, at any rate) include Horace MacMahon, Ralf Harolde, Fern Emmett, Byron Foulger, and Harry Hayden. But unless u consider the Three Stooges to be high-brow, there's little for you here.
