She Wronged Him Right

This time we see throngs of people pouring in at the "Tanktown Theater" to see Betty Boop act in a play called "She Wronged Him Right."

Immediately, we see Betty on stage pacing and all upset. She's reading a note that says, "Pay the mortgage today or else! Signed, Heeza Ratt." Betty is in tears and her pets and the animals on her farm are all pacing in anguish, too.

Anyway, the villain shows up (amid hisses and boos from the theater audience) and winds up singing a duet with Betty and then trying to force himself on her. She yells for "Fearless Fred" to come and save her!

This is corny stuff but it has its share of laughs and the songs are decent.

Not one of the best Betty Boop cartoons, not by a long shot. 'She Wronged Him Right' is still a very good cartoon in many ways however, despite having a slightly slushy happy ending that could be seen coming from miles away.

Fleischer were responsible for some brilliant cartoons, some of them still among my favourites. Their visual style was often stunning and some of the most imaginative and ahead of its time in animation. The character of Betty Boop, one of their most famous and prolific characters, may not be for all tastes and sadly not as popular now, but her sex appeal was quite daring for the time and to me there is an adorable sensual charm about her. That charm, sensuality and adorable factor is not lost anywhere here.

As ever in a Betty Boop cartoon, the animation is still incredibly good, the detail is immaculate, there are the typical imaginative moments (especially with the toys) and everything is beautifully drawn. Every bit as good and even better is the music, which is full of energy and lyrical elegance, and accessible to anybody. The supporting characters are entertaining, archetypal (especially the villain) but that's embraced in a cartoon paying homage to stage melodrama that could be seen as old-fashioned now.

'She Wronged Him Right' is a very funny and clever cartoon, though there are Betty Boop cartoons more surreal and more risqué. The voice acting is fine.

In conclusion, a very good cartoon if not among Betty Boop's best. 8/10 Bethany Cox

"She Wronged Him Right" is a homage to the old fashioned stage melodramas--the sort with a snarling mustachioed villain and a brave hero to save our poor maiden. But, this is meant as a stage production--and you can see the props, stage and audience throughout.

The film begins with the villain demanding Betty pay the mortgage OR else she will need to marry him. She still refuses and calls for help when he attacks her. Soon, Fearless Fred stops chopping apart trees and comes to her rescue. Not surprisingly, the villain is defeated and there is a happy, though water-logged, ending.

All in all, a clever little film that made me chuckle a few time. Not among Betty's best, but darned good.
