The first 15 minutes or so, are OK...but the constant look of dread, pain...and worry on the lead's face, quickly becomes annoying. I mean it's CONSTANT...in every scene he's in. I'm not sure if this was the plan, but if it was, this really spoils the film.
Besides all that weirdness, the supporting actors are awful. Not a single one shone...even in their own light. To be honest, even the lead wasn't that great. He didn't really stand out as a lead.
The cinematography is good though, but the sound is awful...especially in some of the office scenes...the sound is awful. It sounds like the boom mic is miles away from the actors.
Story was abysmal and almost non-sensical.
Just not a great movie in any way, shape, or form.
Sam, the main character, does have a strange, pained expression throughout but I just took that as a character decision either on the part of the actor or director. I kept expecting some kind of twist where this quirky guy turns out to be quirky because of some dark past that gets revealed towards the end, but no, he's just weird and painfully awkward.
The crew seems to have fun with it, and with a movie like this you really can't take it too seriously. I mean, look at some low budget indie horror from years past like Evil Dead and it just went full blow into the camp aspect. This movie doesn't quite "go there" and takes itself a little more seriously, but not so much that you end up feeling sorry for them for missing the mark. If that makes sense.
So... 6 out of 10. Normally I might have bailed on a movie like this within the first few minutes but it was at least entertaining enough that I sat and watched the whole thing merely because I was hooked on the "what's going on" aspect and wanted to find out. It could have been better, but it could have been a lot worse too. For an apparently young crew and a first time director, it wasn't bad and I'll cut them all some slack for the parts that didn't really shine.
The ending explains absolutely NOTHING about the origin of the situation and the root causes of the evil force at play here are left undetermined right up to the credits rolling, but it still was an exciting wrap up.
The acting was quite good with the main character have a very irritating personality, but that was a flaw in the writing and not the acting.
By the last ten minutes you have your concept of who is the good guy and who is the bad guy totally upended which was an unexpected twist, but it contributed to the fairly good conclusion.
The pieces did not fit together seamlessly by any means, but they did bring the film to a satisfying end.
