Maggie May

One of the most disturbing short horrors. Because, in many ways, it is just reflection of reality. Death of mother, two sisters reunited, the wrong option of one of them, the other as the terrible portrait of evil in pure form. To not do anything is one of the most powerful seeds of evil. In same measure, the film gives the image of captivity between domestic violence, indifference of the other - as result , maybe, of schizophrenya - , cries of babies. Intense, admirable crafted.

Getting back home at night,I decided to continue viewing the shorts from Shudder's Etheria film festival. Having found Waffle (2019-also reviewed) a pleasingly off-beat title,I turned towards Maggie May.

Hammering the message home that not taking action in the middle of a crisis can lead to horrific, tragic results, writer/director Mia Kate Russell & cinematographer Tim Egan jab at a unpleasant atmosphere of ugly fish eye lens shots and grating howling baby noises. Having the potential to explore the psychological horror across the entire family in the home, the screenplay by Russell stays away from the subtle, to instead go for grotesque nihilistic venom, which fails to unlock any details in the house of Maggie May.

This kind of horror truly scares me. The perfect combination of social commentary and gore. This writer/director has a truly original voice.

Saw this short on Alter and have to say it's one of the best I've seen. Original script and great acting. Not many shorts are a satisfying experience like this one was. Needs to be a feature film.

It's nice to see a horror short I can actually get excited about. Truly grotesque and very well acted.
