A Fulfilling Masterpiece of Legacy, Leadership, and Faith

Alija stands as a breathing, nuanced tribute to a man whose leadership and faith helped define Bosnia amidst chaos and despair. Much to the annoyance of proud revisionists tethered to the vanity of their dogma-laced falsehood, this series is rooted in both historical truth and philosophical clarity, emphasizing Alija Izetbegovic's intellectual strength, moral struggle, and commitment to justice. The series beautifully champions his role as a principled statesman, philosopher, paragon of virtue, and defender of human dignity whose vision was marked by transcendent Islamic ethics rather than the common political opportunism of his other contemporaries.

What makes Alija especially resonant is its ideological depth in laying witness to the transformative power of Islam that serves as a bulwark of inner reformation and moral civilizational force. Against the backdrop of fascism and communism, ideologies sprouted from European Christian soil and tragically reflected in the genocidal campaigns of Serb and Croat extremists, the narrative elevates Islam as a counter-model: one of mercy, compassion, and otherworldly resilience. Izetbegovic's thought, as expressed in his writings, offered a daring synthesis: a conscious renunciation of both the soul-crushing control of totalitarianism and the hollow promises of secular materialism. In rejecting these twin engines of moral decay--one that shackles the spirit through oppression, and the other that seduces it into apathy--his philosophy illuminated a third path that is unlike any other. Rooted in faith, it asserts that true liberation is not found in systems that dominate or distract, but in the perfected God-gifted religion and way of life ordained for humanity beginning with Adam, the first human and prophet, to whom upon be peace.

As he wrote in the book Islam Between East and West:

'In order to be Islamic, a solution must fulfill two conditions: it must be maximally efficient and maximally humane.'

This principle echoes throughout the series, where Islamic values are not presented as abstract ideals but as embodied wisdom that guides leadership, inspires resistance, and nurtures hope. In doing so, "Alija" radiates the heart of Islamic political philosophy and demonstrates just how deeply spiritual conviction can guide just governance. The beauty of its dialogue, setting, poetry, song, characterization, interfaith respect, and much more uplift the soul while affirming that religious commitments are not weaknesses or masks to be swiftly abandoned at the first sign of any tempest, but on the contrary of utmost importance and the source of greatest strength, especially against the backdrop of war. This is the pinnacle of principled storytelling that honors people's lived experiences and invites further reflection.

Awful Propaganda, Awful Acting, Awful All Around

If you have spent most of your life living in Bosnia & Herzegovina, you know a lot more about the war & Alija than the producers & writers of this terrible piece of propaganda.

The truth is somewhere, but nowhere in this tv show. It depicts the Bosnian Serbs as comical villains, not genocidal maniacs that had a plan and no mercy. It shows Alija is wise statesman, philosopher & poet, none of which he ever was. He was a small man with big dreams of having his own country, and in the process was ready to sacrifice everyone but his family.

His son was never close to any battlefield, his daughter wasn't at his side, and the rest of his family & friends is made up of criminals & thieves. He sacrifced Srebrenica & 9,000 people so he could have Sarajevo. His pride & greed cost him 50% of the country that went to the Serbs. He is responsible for so much death. He is a war criminal. Not a hero.

In 1970, Izetbegovic published a manifesto entitled the Islamic Declaration, expressing his views on relationships between Islam, state and society. The authorities interpreted the declaration as a call for introduction of fundamentalist Sharia law in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and banned the publication. In it, he tried to reconcile Western-style progress with Islamic tradition. The work issued a call for "Islamic renewal" without mentioning Yugoslavia specifically. However, he and his supporters were accused by the Communist authorities of reviving the "Young Muslims" organization and of a conspiracy to set up an "Islamically pure" Bosnia and Herzegovina.
