BLACK MIRROR: High Hopes, Low Quality

Black Mirror.(2017) If I had to describe my game experience in one word, it would be...

REGRET. I bought this game full of expectation, eager to try something new. Black Mirror sounded like something to take a chance on. The trailer was very intriguing. That trailer pretty much sold me, but it was, unfortunately, very deceiving. Needless to say, I was very disappointed. It was a complete waste of my time and money.

Graphically it was pretty low quality. Nowadays, even average games have pretty nice graphics. Black Mirror is early PS2 era graphics, very mediocre and forgettable. If you care at all about the graphics, design and visual art, then this game will certainly not impress. The character animations made them seem like plastic and cardboard cutouts, very hard to watch. Voice acting was not very good either, and did nothing to help the bad graphics.

Mechanically, it was very boring and tedious. The controls overall were awkward and irritating. Camera angles were just terrible. You spend wayyyyy too much time in one area, which isn't very interesting. There were not enough things going on. In narratives driven games details matter so much, they propel you onward. This game just felt extremely lacking, on all fronts. There were not enough things to interact with, puzzles to solves, clues to find. Everything happens so slow, I constantly struggled to stay awake playing this. I can't remember the last time a game put me to sleep.

The story, which seemed promising, was the only thing that kept me going, but it was too slow coming and eventually it became a chore. It became very predictable. It was very hard to keep any interest in this game. I literally don't know why I kept playing at all, and could not wait for it to be over. The only good aspect of it was the music, which was very decent when it played. (Not that often)

Otherwise, this was a bust. I do not recommend.

    STORY: 4/10 GAMEPLAY: 3/10 GRAPHICS: 2/10 ART DESIGN: 3/10 MUSIC: 7/10 OVERALL RATING: 2.5.

    Terrible

Completely horrible game. I was lured in by the trailer... I really like RPG games, I love the Gothic setting, I Love H P Lovecraft. But this was painful. Loading time lengths that we had in the early 00's or even the 90s, glitches. bugs. awkward moving/controls. extremely linear game play, cringey mouth animations. wooden voice acting.

The set pieces and story were fairly good but they didn't compensate for the game as a whole.

As the game came to a close i realized the trailer was more engaging but didn't even feature anything remotely similar to the trailer.

Very expensive for a short dated low budget game too.

on HLTB.com says the game is 5 hours long...but i think the game was about 2hrs and the loading times were 3 hours.... :/

Great backdrops, good story, awful controls

Decent first work if by a new team of developers, and back in the days of the first Resident Evil, something like this would've been short but impressive. Unfortunately, games have progressed so much since then, that this is a pretty frustrating game to play.

Basically, the setting is appropriately mysterious and creepy for this type of exploration-puzzle-solving horror. And the artwork for the backdrop is honestly really well done. The story isn't mind blowing, but is far from bad either. Just a solid horror mystery with a satisfying, if expected, ending.

The main problems are the camera angles and controls, plus loading times.

    • The camera angles are like the first Resident Evil game, and other games around that time, including Final Fantasy games, for example. That is, the background is fixed, and the character walks around in an open area until reaching the edge of the screen. At that point, it jumps to a new backdrop, and so on. Kind of semi-3D. At points it's fine, and a nice change of pace from all the first-person and over-the-shoulder shooters. But at other times, it's pretty awkwardly done.

    • The controls are finicky. You can get stuck on something without an obvious reason for it. Pushing directly in one direction can drift off on an a angle. And when scenes change, it can flip in the opposite direction so the direction you were pushing is now back towards where you came.

    • Loading between some scenes is really slow for modern gaming, especially given that it doesn't look like a particularly demanding game for modern systems. Worst of all, though, is that combined with the previous point - you might, eg. Push in one direction to go to another room; wait ages for it to load; realise you still had your hand on the stick too late, and see the character run back the way you came; wait for it to load back to where you come from; and then do it all over agin to get where you were trying to go.

There are some other minor annoyances, like many collectible objects being invisible until your close enough for a 'pick it up' button to appears But it's the three above that make the game's disadvantages slightly outweigh its strengths.

The loading sceans oh the loading sceans!!

Every room you enter the game stops to load.i couldn't make it past chapter 3 it was just too slow and not enjoyable to play. I love these kinds of games but this one I gave up!
