I had just finished interviewing Ariana Grande on this year’s Oscars red carpet when someone from her team asked me, “Are you going to get away after all this, take a little vacation?”
I nodded my head and smiled.
The “all this” was awards season. In the past, I spent my post-Academy Awards days and nights getting much needed rest and relaxation after a seemingly endless cycle of red carpets, FYC panels and events and parties.
I did take time off again this year. But it wasn’t a vacation.
On March 19, I underwent open-heart surgery.
It all began three years ago when my brother, Kevin, my only sibling, died of a heart attack at age 54. He collapsed while shoveling snow for a neighbor. He was rushed to a hospital. He never woke up. It was during Covid, so my mother and I said goodbye to Kevin via a...

"I keep saying to people, it feels like I've come home in a lot of ways," Jeremiah Brent tells Gold Derby about being the newest host of Queer Eye, joining fellow Fab Five members Antoni Porowski, Jonathan Van Ness, Karamo Brown, and Tan France. "It's the culmination of everything that I've learned, and I get to do it alongside people that I love and admire, and I get to help people. So, it's been a really wild journey."
Brent reveals he was "originally" asked to do the reality TV show when Netflix "brought it back" in 2018; previously, it was called Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and aired between 2003 and 2007 on Bravo. "But at the time, my husband and I had just welcomed our first child, and she was just under a year old, and there was no world that I could imagine leaving and going off to shoot," he notes.

Exclusive: Netflix has hired another unscripted executive from Amazon.
The Love Is Blind streamer has appointed Jenny Falkoff, fresh from the success of Beast Games, to its Jeff Gaspin-led unscripted team.
Falkoff is being tasked with helping Netflix find more large, “splashy” competition formats and “buzzy” social experiments. As Gaspin told Deadline last year, he is now focusing on “bigger formats, more of what you would call broadcast-style shows versus the cable style shows”. It comes after recent greenlights for series such as The Golden Ticket, first revealed by Deadline, and Star Search.
Falkoff was previously head of unscripted series at Amazon, having spent seven months in that role, after previously having been head of reality series for nearly two years.
It comes eight months after her former colleague Alysia Russo, who was head of docuseries at Amazon, made the same move to join Netflix. It used to be...

“I thought that ‘Queer Eye’ was going to be a tiny show that only the gays watched,” Tan told Julia. “Then, Netflix was like, ‘Hey, just so you know, we’re planning on this being a massive global show and we’re doing a big push, so your family is going to find out. You definitely want to come out to them real quick.’ … It was a lot. It was intense.”

Millennials of a certain vintage may know “Deli Boys” creator Abdullah Saeed from his cannabis-related content for Vice, including shows like “Weediquette” and “Bong Appetit.” With his new Hulu sitcom, Saeed has both made the switch to scripted series and upgraded to harder stuff. The namesake protagonists of “Deli Boys,” two spoiled rich kids who suddenly lose their father, are stunned to learn their family legacy isn’t actually a regional chain of Delaware Valley convenience stores: It’s the cocaine smuggling ring for which the delis were just a distribution front.
A crime comedy with a heavy skew toward the comedy, “Deli Boys” sets its unserious tone with the slapstick demise of patriarch Baba Dar (Iqbal Theba), who gushes blood after taking a golf ball to the head as his slack-jawed failsons Mir (Asif Ali) and Raj (Saagar Shaikh) look on in horror. Antoni Porowski may not be as queer as you think he is.
On today’s “Just for Variety” podcast, he says he’s the “Wicked” movie but that was actually his introduction to the beloved “Wizard of Oz” origin story. “Full disclosure, I hadn’t seen the musical and I wasn’t really sure what it was about before,” Porowski says. “I check some gay boxes, but not all of them.”
“Wicked” or not, Porowski has spent the last seven years as one of Hollywood’s most visible out celebrities as a member of the fab five of the award-winning “Queer Eye?”
Now in its ninth season, Porowski is hoping for an even 10. However, he says things may have gotten a little stale along the way. “I’m not going to say that I became jaded over time, but it’s like when you do anything…I think I just wasn’t as grateful,...

Just a short few months after last year’s Oscars had ended, Academy CEO Bill Kramer confidently told me the 97th annual Academy Awards broadcast was in many ways planned and well on its way to being locked in terms of what the show would be and how it would be executed. That sounded impressive.
Then the Los Angeles wildfires changed everything.
That was definitely acknowledged in my conversation recently with this year’s returning producers of the Oscars, Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan. Each won Emmys for last year’s highly praised show (along with host Jimmy Kimmel and his producer/wife Molly McNearney), the first Oscar show to take a top Emmy in several years.

Red Hill Creative is stepping up to bat with “Strikers,” a new cricket-centered comedy series starring “Queer Eye” personality Bobby Berk and creator-actor Dana Abraham. The six-episode, half-hour series is set to begin production in summer 2025.

When steel company heir Aj Joshi (Shaun Majumder) and his publicist niece Maya (Nazanin Mandi) recruit him to revitalize their struggling cricket team, the Steel City Strikers, Amar finds an unexpected second chance at sports glory, guided by his struggling but well-connected manager Mickey (Berk).

The Academy Awards will apparently avoid a looming embarrassment for this year’s show and won’t be asking any past winners to take to the stage and speak glowingly about “Emilia Pérez” star and Best Actress nominee Karla Sofía Gascón.
Ever since the Oscar campaign for Gascón began to crumble over her history of racist and anti-Muslim tweets, Oscar-watchers have been wondering how the Academy was going to deal with her on the show.
Of particular concern was the fact that the Oscar producers previously announced that they would bring back the “Fab 5” format, which was first used in 2009, in which five previous winners present an award together, with each of the past winners praising one of this year’s nominees.

Netflix started its move into original programming with dark and broody dramas such as Lilyhammer, House of Cards and Narcos.
