Frazer Brown, co-producer of the 2021 film Election Night, has become the center of a major controversy within the comics community. In 2020, Brown launched a Kickstarter campaign for a charity comic anthology titled Tales from the Quarantine, which featured contributions from over 400 creators. The campaign raised £37,185 (approximately $47,000 USD at the time), nearly tripling its original goal of £13,000 (around $16,500 USD). Despite the substantial funding, the project quickly fell apart. Years later, the physical anthology-both hardcover and paperback-remains undelivered. Although some backers received minor rewards like trading cards and posters, the main product never shipped. A digital version was eventually released, but it drew criticism for being incomplete and containing numerous errors.
Brown's handling of the situation only worsened matters. Reports indicate that backers and contributors who asked for updates were frequently met with hostility. Several were blocked on social media, and some received threats of legal or even police action for publicly questioning the project's status. Brown's communication has been erratic, often citing lost emails and vague promises of imminent fulfillment that were never kept.
The project's promised charitable donations have also raised alarm. Brown originally pledged to donate proceeds to NHS Charities and The Hero Initiative, but no public documentation of any contributions has been provided. This lack of transparency surrounding the approximately $47,000 raised has fueled distrust and frustration among supporters and professionals in the comics industry.
Kickstarter's legal team reportedly investigated the campaign and imposed restrictions on Brown's account as a result. The Tales from the Quarantine debacle has become a cautionary example within the crowdfunding world, underscoring the importance of transparency, accountability, and respect for both backers and contributors in creator-led projects.
