Ice Cream in the Cupboard

My mom has Alzheimers. She's up there in age, and luckily her and my dad are retired, so he can watch her most of the time. I live at home also to assist, it takes a village. her condition isn't ice cream in the cupboard, its lotion in the refrigerator. This disease is so slowly painful, because day after day u see the person u love becoming less of a person, and more of a shell. I've seen Alzheimer's many times, the end result is always the same. We just wait for it to come, as agonizingly slow as it is. This movie has some genuine insightful moments that, is u are experiencing the same, u know exactly how it feels. Well captured by the writer and well portrayed by the director. The one thing the movie cannot convey is how often those moments happen throughout a regular day.

I loved this movie. I read the book and was happy when I heard it was being made into a film. My family like so many others has had to grapple with many of these challenges, and although the film version takes a bit of artistic license with the original story it seemed very real to me. The story explores the darker side of what happens in a family when dementia strikes a middle-aged suburban mom. Considering the frightening events this movie is based on, the story is told in a way that actually made me laugh almost as much as it made me cry. The performances are great all around, especially the stars Dana Ashbrook and Claudia Ferri, and Tobin Bell is funny and touching as a feisty old Irish grandpa. The beautiful cinematography includes some amazing surrealistic shots that really take the audience into the darkness and confusion of the lead character's mind. The director clearly put a lot of thought into creating a mood that finds humor even in some of the film's darkest moments, while still treating the tragic subject matter with respect. It held my attention from start to finish and kept me entertained while reminding me how important it is to cherish the ones we love while we can. It's a terrific little indie film that bravely goes into the dark waters of the human mind.

"Ice Cream In The Cupboard" is a compelling and gut-wrenching film that benefits from Claudia Ferri's incredible lead performance.

In this drama based on a true story, after a series of unsettling events, a husband begins to question his wife's actions and the result is something none of them can prepare for.

Tackling a subject like Alzheimer's is never easy. "Ice Cream In The Cupboard" takes that subject and brings viewers inside the world of early onset Alzheimer's. Dana Ashbrook gives a solid performance as the husband struggling to move along and help his wife. Claudia Ferri is the powerhouse of this film. An emotional, riveting and raw performance from the exceptional actress. An overall great film that is sure to tackle your emotions.

This movie is incredibly beautiful visually, but that's all it has going for it. I'm sure this was an absolutely lovely book, but the movie does not portray these people as likeable or relatable, and even worse, makes jokes out of this horrible disease. I have worked with Alzheimer's patients in the past, and this depiction of those with it was frankly insulting. This would have benefited greatly from being a short film, as the vision for this movie was clearly focused around a few key scenes with the rest being treated as filler. I would highly recommend spending time watching a more informative film or other first-person account or better yet, just volunteering at an Alzheimer's center if you want to learn more or prepare yourself for the future if someone in your family has been diagnosed.

Hits home when you have been through this yourself and your family. Why it was given low ratings is beyond me.

If you might remember, Julianne Moore won a non-deserved Academy Award for the ridiculous white-washed movie called "Still Alice". That film sugar coated Alzheimers......this movie did not.

Movies like "Iris" , "The Father" and "Amour" and " Ice Cream in the Cupboard" truly depict living with someone with Alzheimers.

There are no happy endings with any of these movies ....but it should be a must watched movie.

It is based on a true story, and I thank this family for sharing this and their love.
