In typical Raju Hirani fashion the story assumes the role of the superstar hero and you empathize with the characters immediately. The character sketches are so well defined that you can find each of these characters around you without mistaking them for caricatures.
Although, the title betrays what the movie is about there are many layers to enjoy here. Right from the father-son relationship to the role of an extended family, to the importance we give to our traditions or a snarky reference to the exorbitant expenses of health care and the struggles of people who not necessarily have the means to afford such care. The movie definitely leaves you with enough to ponder on. In fact, the title could easily be a play on our relations being on a ventilator and it being up to us when we plug the ventilator off.
A must watch for every family, especially the younger generation to understand that family is there for a reason and Facebook and Twitter can't replace it.
This film treads a fine line and makes you rethink your priorities. Elders may not be able to keep pace, but they will always - in Bharat - continue to carry heart space. The experiences and blessings they bring into our lives can't be exported in pragmatic or medical value. This film is so beautiful - at times funny, at times drama and still ends up making you sentimental. Enjoyed all the performances and the brilliant story line.
It was on TataSky Film Fest channel this evening so I got to watch it. Surprise, surprise ... Ashutosh Gowariker the well known Bollywood director is the lead actor. Have to say, he did a good job.
The plot broadly centres around the decision of when and whether to switched off the ventilator of a man on his death bed and the quirks and foibles of his typical extended family - is quite different from most other movies and certainly from any Bollywood fare. The film is believably realistic for the most part and very well enacted. It did drag slightly around half way but picked up again soon after. Boman Irani had what one would call a surprise "guest appearance". That scene provided a healthy dose of humour and hilarity to the script. Boman is of course a very fine actor and it certainly shows. To give all the actors their due, everyone did a good job. Priyanka had a fleeting appearance as herself on a video call .. nice touch.
In summary, Ventilator is a good movie. Worth watching though it may not appeal to those seeking out and out entertainment.
