The visuals of this movie are wonderful. The acting was firm but the plot did have some gaps that Yelena could've elaborated on more. The film was quite repetitive and on the other hand was extremely compelling in some parts. It is an emotional rollercoaster. Highly recommend this film for anyone who wants to have a taste of greece.
The film's language should have been Greek. It's time for Greece to promote their language even in films that are made for international audience.
"Man of God" is a Biography - Drama movie in which we follow the life of Saint Nektarios of Aegina, a man who was exiled unjustly, convicted without trial and slandered without cause.
Firstly, I have to say that I did not have any expectations from this movie but I have also to admit after watching it that it was simply brilliant. The direction which was made by Yelena Popovic who is also the writer, it was amazing and she presented very well the life of Saint Nektarios and made possible for the audience to relate to him and to just follow the plot. In addition to this, the interpretation of Aris Servetalis who played as Nektarios was simply outstanding and he made the difference. Some other interpretations that have to be mentioned were Alexander Petrov's who played as Kostas, Alexandros Mylonas' who played as Metropolitan Meletius and Christos Loulis who played as Christos. Finally, I have to say that "Man of God" is an outstanding movie and I strongly recommend everyone to watch it because I am sure that everyone can learn and even earn something by watching it.

I am a religious man and i really wanted to like the movie! But for my disappointment the edit and the presentation was all over the place! No actual background for any character! Even for Saint Nektarios i couldn't believe how shallow his presentation was. I was trying to feel his injustice, his slander but there is a disconnection to the actual character and the audience. I have read St. Nektarios story and i was remembering things to fill the gaps! Jumping from scene to scene in a hurry to tell us the story of St. Nektarios without actually telling the story! The actors were good don't get me wrong! The problem is definitely with the directing and the editing! Sorry if i sound harsh but the epicenter should be the character of Saint Nektarios, his background and not to just tell his story!
I expected with intense emotion, more than curiosity, to see this film. I saw it as Greek Orthodox front to inspired adaptation of one of the most impressive saints of Orthodoxy of XX century.
So, I am more than subjective.
The great virtue of Yelena Popovich is to propose not exactly a biography. But a precise , profound beautiful, useful at whole image of the essence of sainthood.
The episodes of a life in which the hypocrisies, fears, cowardness, lies and doubts, envies and stupidity of people are front to spiritual courage and totaly loyality to God will, strong faith and clean honesty of a ierarch remaining a humble and courageous in special way monk.
A film for faith, about faith, in which Aris. Servetalis propose a great fruit of his effort and art.
The last scenes of dialogue between Servetalis and Mickey Rooney are just precious .
It is an Orthodox film; out of artistic virtues or cinematography, the message is the essential one. So, difficult to see out of faith area. Because, scene by scene, it is a confession.
So, easy to call it a masterpiece. Indeed, it is one and, from music to image, from tension to the expressions of patience of saint ierarch Nektarios, all is proof for that.
But a masterpiece in very specific terms.
Short, see it !

- WissenswertesNectarios of Aegina (1 October 1846 - 8 November 1920), Metropolitan of Pentapolis and Wonderworker of Aegina, is one of the most renowned Greek saints, venerated in the Eastern Orthodox Church and officially recognized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople in 1961. His feast day is celebrated every year on 9 November.
He served as a bishop in Cairo for one year. Nectarios was very popular with the people, which gave rise to jealousy among his colleagues. They were able to persuade his superior that Nectarios had ambitions to displace the Patriarch. After the conflict in Egypt, he then returned to Greece, and spent several years as a preacher. He was then director of the Rizarios Ecclesiastical School for the education of priests in Athens for 15 years. In 1904, at the request of several nuns, he established Holy Trinity Monastery for them on the island of Aegina. Nectarios ordained two women as deaconesses in 1911, even though rarely done. Up to the 1950s, few Greek Orthodox nuns also became monastic deaconesses.
In 1908, at the age of 62, Nectarios resigned from his post as school director and withdrew to the Holy Trinity Convent on Aegina, where he lived out the rest of his life as a monk. He wrote, published, preached, and heard confessions. He also tended the gardens, carried stones, and helped with the construction of the monastery buildings that were built with his own funds. Nectarios died on November 8, 1920, at the age of 74, following hospitalization for prostate cancer. Saint Nektarios is considered a patron saint for people who are suffering from diseases; such as cancer, heart trouble, joint pain, epilepsy, arthritis, etc.
- Crazy CreditsEPILOGUE: "Apology from the Holy Synod. The Holy Spirit has enlightened the gathered members of the Holy Synod of the Patriarch of Alexandria and all Africa, under the leadership of H.B. Petros VII, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and all Africa, more than a century since Saint Nektarios, the great Teacher and Father of the Holy Eastern Orthodox Church was expelled from the Church of Alexandria, to reach the following decision:"
"Taking into account the resolution of the Church to rank Saint Nektarios amongst the saints because of his innumerable miracles and his acceptance within the religious conscience of Orthodox Christians throughout the world, we appeal to the mercy of the ever-charitable God. We hereby restore the ecclesiastical order of the Saint of our century, Saint Nektarios, and grant to him all due credits and honors. We beseech Saint Nektarios to forgive both us, unworthy as we are, and our predecessors, are brothers of the Throne of Alexandria for opposition to the Saint and for all which, due to human weakness or error, our Holy Father, Bishop of Pentapolis, Saint Nektarios, suffered. Signed Petros VII, Patriarch of Alexandria and all Africa. 15th of September 1998"
"The convent in Aegina was recognized by the Holy Synod in 1924. Nektarios was declared a saint by the Greek Orthodox Church in 1961."
