‘Elevator Game’ Review (Shudder)
Image
Stars: Megan Best, Gino Anania, Verity Marks, Alec Carlos, Nazariy Demkowicz, Madison MacIsaac, Liam Stewart-Kanigan | Written by Travis Seppala | Directed by Rebekah McKendry

Elevator Game is the new film by Rebekah McKendry, a director who caught my attention with All the Creatures Were Stirring and impressed me with Glorious. On the other hand, she also has a writing credit on the dismal Bring It On: Cheer or Die. So I was a little apprehensive when she did another teen-themed film that not only shared a lot of that film’s cast but was based on an urban legend that’s about ten years past its expiration date.

However, it was an enjoyably creepy legend. I even got talked into playing it walking back to my hotel after several films and several beers at Sfff one year. Of course, nothing happened, but it was unnerving when the doors opened and I...

Dark Sky Films Acquires Herd Out of FrightFest
Image
Following a successful world premiere at London’s FrightFest, Dark Sky Films today announced it has acquired North American distribution rights to Herd, an action-driven horror film and the directorial debut from Steven Pierce, co-written by Pierce and James Allerdyce. Herd stars Ellen Adair (Trick, Cryptid), Mitzi Akaha (Bashira), Jeremy Holm (The Ranger, Brooklyn 45, Black Mold), Amanda Fuller (Starry Eyes, All the Creatures Were Stirring) among others. The film, which premiered on IMAX at Cineworld to a sold-out crowd in Leicester Square, London, will be released in theaters and on VOD in October 2023.

The distribution arrangement was negotiated by Greg Newman, Executive Vice President of Dark Sky Films, and Bill Straus of Bridge Independent.

Glorious Clip: Ryan Kwanten Goes Up Against A Lovecraftian Glory Hole In The Latest Shudder Movie [Exclusive]
Image
In practically no time at all, Shudder has established itself as the prime streaming destination for all sorts of hidden gems in the horror genre. Let's put it this way, for a recent example: Any platform that provides a home for a fever dream as genuinely unhinged and utterly unforgettable as Phil Tippett's "Mad God" deserves all the plaudits and appreciation it gets.

Not content to rest on such refreshing success stories, however, Shudder is moving ahead with its next prized acquisition. "Glorious" alternately awed, scared, and delighted festival audiences upon its premiere at this year's Fantasia Fest, ahead of its recent debut on streaming. /Film's Matt Donato reviewed the film, describing it as, "Slimy, icky cosmic horror gets existential in a roadway rest stop bathroom to embrace single-location simplicity, yet existential provocation is infinite. It's a bit 'Lovecraftian Saw' as cotton-candy-colored doomsdaying pits man against hidden gobbledygook, relying...

‘Glorious’ Review (Shudder)
Image
Stars: Ryan Kwanten, J.K. Simmons, André Lamar, Sylvia Grace Crim | Written by Joshua Hull, David Ian McKendry, Todd Rigney | Directed by Rebekah McKendry

Wes is having a day that is anything but glorious. He’s fallen asleep at the wheel, nearly driven off the road. He’s gotten drunk at a rest area and burned most of the things he took with him when he left his previous life, and for good measure, his pants as well. Now he’s hungover and pantsless in a filthy public restroom. That’s when God starts talking to him.

Well, Ghat starts talking to him, and he claims to be a God. But whoever heard of a God hanging out at a glory hole? Certainly not Wes who promptly makes for the door. But Ghat is indeed a deity and he’s not going to let Wes leave until he hears him out,...

Image
Syfy’s SurrealEstate will again see the light of day. The Canadian drama series, which was canceled last year, will return for a second season for premiere in 2023, Syfy has revealed.

SurrealEstate will join previously announced new scripted series Reginald the Vampire, a dramedy based on Johnny B. Truant’s Fat Vampire book, and space-set survival drama The Ark, from writer Dean Devlin, as well as Halloween horror movie Bring It On: Cheer or Die.

[Indie Horror Month 2021] Women of Indie Horror: Dr. Rebekah McKendry
Image
You can’t really talk about indie horror without talking about Dr. Rebekah McKendry. She has become synonymous with the genre, first as a journalist, then as a podcaster, and now as a filmmaker with multiple shorts and two features, All the Creatures Were Stirring and Psycho Granny, to her credit so far. She is what those douchier than myself might refer to as a “tastemaker” or an “influencer”—a lifelong fan of horror with a large platform from which to educate and enlighten. She’s a rare breed in the genre, both a creator and professional appreciator, deeply entrenched in all aspects of the genre. She has been and continues to be one of horror’s greatest champions.

Her debut feature, All the Creatures Were Stirring, a Christmas horror anthology co-written and directed alongside her husband David Ian McKendry, might as well be called “Indie Horror: The Movie,” seeing...

[Indie Horror Month 2021] Women of Indie Horror: Brea Grant
Image
There may be no one in independent horror having more of a moment right now than Brea Grant. As an actor, she starred in one of the best horror movies of 2020, After Midnight, and now The Stylist, already one of the best horror movies of 2021. As a writer, she’s responsible for Lucky (in which she also stars), an ambitious and inventive horror film about female fear that’s now available to stream on Shudder. As writer and director, she’s responsible for 12 Hour Shift, a bloody black comedy starring Angela Bettis as a drug-addicted nurse caught up in an organ harvesting scheme that goes bad; it was one of 2020’s best movies, full stop. The lesson from all of this? Give Brea Grant the keys to everything.

One of the infinite number of things that’s great about the Texas-born actor, writer, and director is her commitment to indie horror.

Monte’s Favorites of 2018
[Editor's Note: With this past year being another great one in the horror genre across multiple mediums, Monte Yazzie continues Daily Dead's "Favorites of 2018" features by reflecting on his favorite viewing, listening, and collecting experiences from 2018.]

Hereditary: Horror films have utilized the family dynamic, mostly broken beyond repair, to build visions of invasive family structure terror. Think of films like The Omen, The Shining, or even more recently, The Conjuring. What makes director Ari Aster’s first feature film different from most is the structure concerning the family, specifically the historical structure and the ongoing trauma and despair that has permeated the foundation of this family’s ancestry. Hereditary takes the viewer into horrific aspects concerning grief, trauma, and ultimately despair before unleashing the supernatural threat—it’s why the film is so effective. It’s this journey into emotion that ultimately makes the visions of horror resonate so strongly.

Suspiria: Nothing is sacred in today’s remake-obsessed film world, yet it still sounds absolutely foolish when...

In this we see a man and woman who are kind of on a date at a local theatre. They meet outside and once inside are introduced to a couple of strange characters until they are eventually seated to watch the show. The first part of the show then leads into the opening segment The Stockings Are Hung.

Christmas Takes a Sadistic Turn in This Trailer For All The Creatures Were Stirring
“I can’t wait to watch you all die.”

We’ve got a trailer here for a new holiday anthology horror film called All The Creatures Were Stirring. As you’ll see, Christmas takes a very dark and sadistic turn in each of the jacked-up segments in the film. I like these kinds of movies so I think this actually looking like it could deliver some wicked entertainment.

Here’s a synopsis that gives you a little tease of what this movie entails:

Ho, ho, no…! The joyful spirit of the holidays is about to take one dark turn after another. From sadistic office parties and last-minute shopping nightmares, to vengeful stalkers and immortal demons, there’s plenty out there to keep you from getting out of bed to see what’s under the tree this holiday season.

The film is also described as a “devilish stocking stuffer of a movie.

Constance Wu in X-Mas Horror 'All the Creatures Were Stirring' Trailer
"The next person can steal someone's already opened gift." Rlje Films has unveiled an official trailer for a creepy holiday horror titled All the Creatures Were Stirring, which premiered at the Chattanooga Film Festival this year, even though it will be getting a direct-to-vod/DVD release this fall. This looks like a fun anthology horror to catch. When an awkward date on Christmas Eve leads a couple into a strange theater, they're treated to a bizarre and frightening collection of Christmas stories, featuring a wide ensemble of characters doing their best to avoid the horrors of the holidays. From boring office parties and last-minute shopping, to vengeful stalkers and immortal demons, there's plenty to fear this holiday season... The cast features Constance Wu (from Crazy Rich Asians), Amanda Fuller, Jonathan Kite, Graham Skipper, Jocelin Donahue, and Ashley Clements. This looks a bit low quality, but it might still be entertaining.
