Maria's Choice

'Aurora Borealis' is a strongly felt drama, well worth seeing. The emotions are deep, and the movie provides a glimpse into a side of postwar European history, both Austrian and Hungarian, that doesn't get much attention.

Although both my wife and I figured out the general outlines of the deep dark secret, it did not damage our enjoyment of this film. The acting is excellent, especially the two actresses who play Maria, one as a young woman in the 1950s, and the other as an old woman in the present day.

Isabelle Huppert, a long time friend of director Márta Mészáros since their collaboration in Erbinnen (1980), was originally supposed to have a role in the movie, but eventually withdrew from the project in order to star in Elle (2016).

Olga's year of birth is 1954, but we can say for sure that the year when the action takes part is 2017-2018 (see the iPhone and Olga's car). So we have a difference of around 64 years, but the actress who plays Olga is much younger (she is actually 52).
