I can honestly say I've never seen a movie quite like Inda Reid's "Sunday Mornings". Courtney Arlett gives an arresting and captivating performance as Sunday, a Church-going, God-fearing woman, with a big family and a lot of heart. The film moves at a brisk pace (run-time is just about 65 minutes) but packs in a lot of characters and situations. The ones that stuck with me the most were in the opening sequences, seeing a group of women going after an abusing husband in their Sunday best was empowering and powerful. It ends on two radically different tones, for which I applaud the filmmakers for trying something completely different...a musical number, followed by the conclusion of a very dark subplot. I can honestly say I've never seen anything like it! Definitely worth a watch.
This was an entertaining indie film shot in ATL. It touched on a few topics, including abuse, foster care, singleness, sisterhood, and faith with just the right amount of humor to tell the story. Great, relatable lead actress, Courtney Arlett. I enjoyed it.
I must admit that I had no idea what this movie was about prior to watching. I ran across it on Prime Video; saw that it had something to do with Black church ladies, and; that it wasn't too long, so I took a chance. I am SO glad I did! Any Black person with even a passing familiarity with Black churches will recognize the women in this group of six sisters. When one gets in trouble, she's got five saviors who come running. And that is where this movie takes a dark, but highly comedic, turn. Church women are thought of as nice, gentle, retiring types. Well that's not these women-at all. The juxtaposition of church ladies in their hats and the lengths to which they'll go for each other is what makes this film work. I wish the production had more funding. I suspect that some of the script's lack of flow in certain scene transitions had more to do with what was captured on video and needed to result in a more-than-decent movie than what was in those 90+ pages. Of course, it could always be both script and editing.
On the whole, this movie would make a very good series. I'm not the kind of viewer who likes 95% of what passes for comedy. I think most of it is plebeian in the extreme. Nevertheless, if producers hired the right writers, a series based on Sunday Morning would have a good shot at success. I hope someone in L. A. reads this review and gives the idea some thought.

This was a really fun comedy to stumble across. I liked the lead actress a lot. I'd love to see her in more stuff. It's not a big studio movie by any means but you can tell the indie team has some real talent on their squad. Can't wait to see more from them.
What a riot of a movie! One moment you're laughing out loud and then you're suddenly transported to much darker subject matter. But that's life. And I think that's the point of this movie. While you never know which direction it'll take next, Sunday Mornings eventually snowballs into a comprehensive portrait of Sunday's family. The movie is full of endearing well-acted characters, with a bunch of hilarious secondary roles for the central characters to riff off (Dell and Brutus were a couple of my favourites). Give this a go if you're into micro-budget indie film and feel like a meandering yet soulful journey without all the usual Hollywood fanfare. Oh, and you don't want to mess with these sisters!
