Hideyuki Furuhashi has established himself as a household figure owing to projects like Mha: Vigilantes. But there are some underrated series from Furuhashi that the anime community might have overlooked.

Sci-fi anime titles have many profound themes that are reflected in their antagonists. While the protagonists of sci-fi series may exemplify the positive morals that the anime tries to instill in viewers, the opposite is true for their enemies. From visuals to storytelling Tite Kubo’s series Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War is all the rage. Studio Pierrot went the extra mile with the series. And it doesn’t disappoint in any way. Rather, it is more than promising in several aspects.

With the third cour in premiere, the series unpacked some of the major battles. Be it Mayuri’s duel with Pernida or Shunsui’s showdown with Lille Barro, it was spectacular in most ways. There is, however, an ability yet to be charted in the final cour.

Japan’s Nikkatsu studio is pitching “River” at the top of its Tiffcom sales slate. The film – on which it shares rights with Third Window Films – is a time loop comedy from Yamaguchi Junta, director of “Beyond The Infinite Two Minutes.”

The one-hundred-year-old Fujiya inn stands in a quiet region of Kyoto. An employee is standing in front of the Kibune river at the back of the building when she is called back to work. But two minutes later, she finds herself back at the river again. The whole inn seems to be stuck in a time loop! Not only Mikoto, but other staff and guests begin to feel something strange. Hot sake does not get hot. Rice porridge never gets eaten and there’s a bathroom that is impossible to leave. For all that people can’t move forward, their memories are intact. Some people want to leave. Others want to stay.

Season 1, Episode 1 of The Yuzuki Family's Four Sons, "Yuzuki's House," premiered on Crunchyroll on Oct. 5, 2023 to widespread complaints over the quality of the anime's subtitles. Crunchyroll temporarily took down the episode on Thursday in response.

River is a unique and entertaining time loop movie that knows when to speed up and when to slow down, offering a refreshing take on a well-worn premise. The film cleverly shifts between different characters, preventing it from becoming repetitive, and introduces new plot twists and romantic interactions to keep things interesting. Riko Fujitani delivers a standout performance as Mikoto, grounding the story with heart and emotion, while the ensemble cast adds levity and makes the film engaging and memorable.

Time loop movies are great. Even though we’ve seen the premise play out numerous times onscreen, most of which have been influenced by Groundhog Day, filmmakers continue using the concept in creative ways. Junta Yamaguchi’s River plays with the conceit from various angles, and the result is oftentimes sweet, hilarious, and chaotic. River knows when to speed up and when to slow down, when to infuse a brief bit of romance,...

Twentieth-century shonen titles like Fist of the North Star and Dragon Ball helped set the stage for today's shonen anime world, but it was the "big three" that really made shonen the #1 demographic for anime. Those three titles redefined what shonen can be, introducing or reinventing staples such as the power of friendship, the virtue of hard work, and the pain of betrayal.

Naruto fans, for example, can point out many classic scenes in Masashi Kishimoto's masterwork that played a role in creating the modern era of shonen manga/anime. Even if Naruto drew plenty of inspiration from what came before, this anime also had its own fresh, bold ideas that established certain shonen conventions or took them to the next level in a way no other anime could possibly manage.

Time loop movies are all about finding the beauty in repetition; helping us understand our rhythms and routines, and find a way to think bigger. To evolve beyond what’s comfortable and familiar – to grow. So it seems only apt that Junta Yamaguchi and Makoto Ueda’s smartly-assembled new feature River, is itself a play on their own kind of familiar. Effectively a rerun of the team’s other time loop movie, 2020’s festival smash Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes, River doesn’t so much build on that winning formula as it does simplify it, chasing soul over science-fiction, and ending up with something deeper, if a little too similar.

Sweeping long takes? Hyper-mobile camerawork? A chaotic farce with a hint of the fantastical? River does it all, again, often feeling just as much a quasi-sequel to Two Minutes, as it does a follow-up for Yamaguchi, Ueda and their troupe of actors.

In the wintry valley town of Kibune, Japan, we will find the Fujiya Inn. There we find one of the waitresses, Mikoto. They are sent to the basement to do a quick inventory count when Mikito steps out back where a small river runs behind the inn. As they look out they have a small prayer and go about their work. Two minutes later they're back behind the inn, in the same spot by the river. Weird. A case of deja vu perhaps? Mikito gets back to work, and… two minutes later she is back behind the inn, again. Something is wrong. They know it. The other employees and guests also sense it as well. They discover they are all stuck in an endless...
