Marc Maron likely isn’t going to have comedy nemesis Jon Stewart on his podcast before it ends this fall — and he’s definitely not going to be sitting down with Bill Maher anytime soon, given his most recent comments about the Real Time host.
Maron just guested on Pod Save America, the podcast that should probably change its name after eight years of saving precisely squat. While he was there to promote his new HBO special, and discuss the imminent end of Wtf, Maron also commented on the state of modern comedy, including how Jerry Seinfeld went from a guy who “didn’t speak much publicly” to a guy who was “never shutting up.

Marc Maron recently appeared on “Pod Save America” (via Vulture) and doubled down on his criticisms of Bill Maher. While the “Wtf” host acknowledged that he joined Maher on HBO’s “Real Time” three times in the past, he has since turned on Maher in recent years. Maron already called Maher out earlier this summer for being partial to “some of the things” Donald Trump is doing in his second administration as U.S. president.
“I can’t do it,” Maron now said when “Pod Save America” host Jon Lovett asked him about Maher. “I always had a problem with his tone, and it happens with some of the other boomers, there’s this desperate chasing of relevance that changes someone’s mind in terms of how they approach what they do and also kind of makes the whole undertaking feel desperate.”

The American romance with the open road is a story we tell ourselves constantly. It is a myth of freedom, of shedding a settled life for the promise of experience somewhere to the west. Director Ebs Burnough’s documentary, Kerouac’s Road: The Beat of a Nation, positions itself as an inquiry into the source code of that myth: Jack Kerouac’s 1957 novel, On the Road.
The film sets out to understand why this specific book maintains its powerful hold on the nation’s psyche, acting as a rite of passage for generations of restless souls. Burnough connects the post-war restlessness of the Beat Generation to the questions facing Americans today, asking what it means to hit the road now.
With passages from the novel read by Michael Imperioli providing a steady, rhythmic pulse, the documentary presents itself not as a simple biography but as a multi-layered investigation into a cultural...

When Don Lemon parted ways with CNN in 2023, he left armed with a few qualities that were bound to serve him in good stead. He was one of the most recognized anchors in the country, and he knew what it took to stand apart from the rest of the TV news pack.
As he dipped his toes into independent, digital media, however, he realized he was just a rookie who had to develop new skills — and fast. Lemon rented studio space “in the heart of Manhattan,” but quickly found viewers wanted to see him in a more authentic venue, like in his living room with the fireplace lit. Early in his tenure, Lemon secured what in the traditional news business would be considered a big “get” — a one on one interview with tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, whose social-media platform, X, had just agreed to distribute a new Lemon program. When a bright-eyed, 17 year-old Michael Imperioli first moved to New York City in the early ’80s, just as he was beginning to find his footing in East Village’s buzzing arts scene, he strolled into St. Mark’s Books and picked up a book that would change his life forever: “The Diamond Sutra.”
The historic Buddhist text, written in India sometime in the 2nd century Ce and believed to be the world’s earliest printed books, isn’t exactly the literary fare you’d expect to capture the fascination of a teenager in ’80s downtown New York — a subset more likely to be reading the likes of Alan Ginsberg, J.D Salinger and William S. Burroughs. But when Imperioli’s favorite writer Jack Kerouac, another rising literary star at the time, announced his dedication to the Sutra manuscript, and even pledged to read it every single day after reorganizing it into seven daily readings,...

Director and star of the Vegas-set mafia drama spoke to an audience as part of this year’s Tribeca film festival, looking back at their 1995 hit and its timeless themes
For this year’s Tribeca film festival, the annual New York salute to moviemaking featured a special screening of Casino, the Martin Scorsese-directed drama starring Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Sharon Stone, timed to its 30th anniversary. But even though the splashy epic premiered in this same city back in November 1995, its themes of power, money, greed and ego are echoing in the modern ethos louder than ever.
“You can go back to the ancient Greek tragedies,” said Scorsese, speaking alongside De Niro and moderated by the standup comedian W Kamau Bell on stage at the Beacon Theater before the screening. “It’s a basic story of hubris and pride, with the pride taking us all down.”

Exclusive: Author Jack Kerouac set an ambitious task for himself when he pondered writing On the Road, his 1957 masterpiece that still reverberates in the American imagination.
“My purpose is to conquer knowledge of the U.S.A.,” he wrote, “to know it as I know the palm of my hand.”
Those words, immodest, carried away with possibility and essentially romantic, are articulated in the new documentary Kerouac’s Road: The Beat of a Nation, which makes its premiere this evening at Tribeca Festival in New York. Actor Michael Imperioli voices Kerouac’s writings in the film directed by Ebs Burnough and produced by Burnough, Eliza Hindmarch, and John Battsek. Watch an excerpt from Kerouac’s Road in the exclusive clip above.

The documentary interweaves “stories of modern-day travelers with insights from those influenced by or connected to the legendary author,” Tribeca’s Jarod Neece writes in the festival program.

Celebrity Jeopardy! just crowned its third winner, and that newly-minted champion is already vying for Ken Jennings‘ job. W. Kamau Bell appeared on the Inside Jeopardy! Podcast and joked that Jennings works too hard. Bell faced off against Robin Thede and Dave Friedberg in the finale on Wednesday, April 23. He won only by correctly answering the Final Jeopardy question after being $2,000 behind the first-place contender with $13,600. He wagered all but $1 in Final Jeopardy, and since he was the only one to get the question right, he won the game. In addition to becoming the champ, he also took home $1 million to his charity of choice, DonorsChoose, a nonprofit organization that allows individuals to donate directly to public school classroom projects. About halfway through the interview, after talking about Bell’s game, executive producer and podcast host Michael Davies said, “After the show, you spoke to Ken and said, ‘Hey look,...

On a night when half a dozen people made jokes about this being the last-ever Mark Twain Prize, Conan O’Brien made sure the ceremony at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts ended on a high note.
O’Brien accepted the award for lifetime achievement in comedy Sunday night while acknowledging the backstage turmoil that hangs over the future of the cultural center in Washington, D.C.
O’Brien, 61, was named the 26th recipient of the Mark Twain Prize in mid-January, about three weeks before President Donald Trump upended the Kennedy Center by ousting longtime president Deborah Rutter and board chairman David Rubenstein. Trump dismissed the board of trustees and replaced them with loyalists, who then elected him chairman.
On Sunday, O’Brien specifically thanked Rubenstein and Rutter — drawing an extended round of applause — and also Kennedy Center staffers who, he said, were “worried about what the future might bring.

A growing number of artists are reconsidering their scheduled performances at the Kennedy Center following a dramatic leadership shift that has left the institution in turmoil.
The controversy began when President Donald Trump was elected chairman of the Kennedy Center’s board of trustees, leading to the immediate dismissal of longtime President Deborah F. Rutter. Trump’s decision to appoint former acting director of national intelligence Richard Grenell as interim president has further fueled concerns.
Trump, who announced his takeover via Truth Social, vowed to make the center “Great Again,” stating, “The Kennedy Center is an American Jewel, and must reflect the brightest Stars on its stage from all across our Nation.” Many perceived this as a dismissal of the artists previously booked to perform.
According to Kennedy Center staff members who spoke on the condition of anonymity, ticket sales dropped by approximately 50% in the week following the announcement.

Celebrity Jeopardy! is back and pitting stars against one another as they compete for a chance to win big for a charity of their choosing. But with the latest season’s contestants comes a nostalgic moment for host Ken Jennings. In the episode’s opening anecdotes, the host approached player W. Kamau Bell to hear his brief story about having been part of Jeopardy! before despite never playing it. “In a way, you’ve been on Jeopardy! before, I’m told,” Jennings began his conversation with the comedian, author, and podcaster from Chicago who is best known for CNN‘s United Shades of America. “Yes, I was not a contestant, but I was a clue, which confirmed that I was a successful person, so I could prove to my dad that I’d made it in show business,” Bell revealed. But that memory isn’t all as Jennings added another layer to the meta moment.

Since Joe Rogan left reality TV and sitcoms behind, he has become so rich that fans want to know how much he pays his staff. The way Joe did that was by launching his podcast, "The Joe Rogan Experience," interviewing stars like Post Malone, and gaining millions of listeners.
Many of Joe's fans still loved him after he called out The Big Bang Theory and criticized Taylor Swift in ways that outraged her fans. However, even though Howard Stern defended Joe and Jon Stewart had his back, he has also lost and angered some of his followers. For proof of that, all anyone has to do is look at the fact that some of Joe's fans questioned whether he was "insincere" on his podcast.

The annual Sundance Film Festival gala fundraiser has unveiled its 2025 honorees. Known as “Celebrating Sundance Institute,” presented by Google TV, the gala will bestow the Vanguard Awards to “Dìdi” writer/director Sean Wang, and “Sugarcane” co-directors Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie. Both features premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.
“Dìdi” won the U.S. Dramatic Audience Award and a Special Jury Prize for Best Ensemble Cast, before being acquired by Focus Features.
“For over a decade, Sundance has been my north star, symbolizing artistic excellence and bold, distinct voices,” Wang said of the honor. “It has since also become a community of artists, an unwavering support system, and a creative home for both myself and my first feature, ‘Dìdi (弟弟)’. As the recipient of several Sundance Institute artist development programs — Ignite, Taaf, and the Screenwriters and Directors Labs — I know firsthand how deeply transformative that support can be for emerging storytellers.

Comic and podcaster Marc Maron is calling out his peers who use their positions to drive what he terms “the new fascism” just a day after right-wing comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made racist and sexist jokes at Donald Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally.
Other comics also slammed Hinchcliffe who, among other things, called Puerto Rico “a floating island of garbage.”
Tweeted Michael Ian Black, “I think America just found its next Jim Breuer!”
Maron’s statement, posted in full on his Wtf With Marc Maron website and shared in part on social media, did not specifically name Hinchcliffe, but the message seems clear.
Writes Maron: “The anti-woke flank of the new fascism is being driven almost exclusively by comics, my peers. Whether or not they are self-serving or true believers in the new fascism is unimportant. They are of the movement. Whether they see themselves as acolytes or just comics doesn’t matter.

Actor Jon Cryer played the role of Alan Harper in one of the most popular sitcoms of the 2000s Two and a Half Men. Cryer started his stint on the hit series starring opposite Charlie Sheen, who is arguably the more popular one among the two lead actors. However, following Sheen’s infamous exit from the series, Cryer carried on the series for four more seasons.

No standing ovation at the Cannes or Sundance film festivals could match the unique emotional intensity of one delivered to a filmmaker named B. Raheem Ballard on Thursday afternoon inside a stuffy chapel at San Quentin.
That morning, Ballard, who has been incarcerated for 22 years, missed the world premiere of a film he directed, Dying Alone, and the follow-up Q&a with comedian W. Kamau Bell, because the event conflicted with his parole board hearing.
“Quick update,” said one of the festival’s two emcees, Juan Moreno Haines, interrupting the afternoon awards ceremony. “Raheem was found suitable.” Ballard, who had been sentenced to be in prison until 2039, had just learned that he would soon be released, and he walked, blinking, into a roaring crowd in the chapel. “I’m overwhelmed,” he said. Moments later, Ballard’s movie won a prize from the International Documentary Association, but he had left to call...

What Would You Do? is returning for its 17th season. As seen in the trailer, John Quiñones is back as the series’ host. Sara Haines also returns as a correspondent as the two travel around the country for the show.
Quiñones Certainly Knows How To Make An Entrance
The series is something of a social experiment, collecting the reactions of strangers as they come across some sort of conflict in public. Not realizing the whole thing is staged, their reactions are then caught on camera. The series originally appeared on ABC’s Primetime before getting its own first season.
The trailer shows host John Quiñones making all sorts of entrances, even appearing out of limousines and helicopters, before he asks people caught on camera the show’s title question. This season, experiments have been filmed in Colorado, New Jersey, Nevada, and New York.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences handed out the awards, which were presented at the Palladium Times Square in New York City, on Thursday night. W. Kamau Bell hosted the ceremony.
Also during the ceremony, documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award, which was presented by fellow documentarian Sheila Nevins.

Roy Wood Jr. is about to launch a new comedy show that will, if all goes well, feature people who aren’t supposed to be funny cracking wise on a network that isn’t known for making people laugh.
“I like comedy in tough places,” quips Wood.
He has found one. CNN — CNN? — will on Saturday launch Wood as host of “Have I Got News For You,” the U.S. version of a U.K. comedy mainstay. In “News,” two teams of comedians, newsmakers, actors and media personalities use news clips and headlines to drum up jokes and gags, all improv-style, though a round of different segments. Amber Ruffin, the actor and late-night writer, and Michael Ian Black, an actor, improv comedian and author, will serve as team captains each week.
One element that might bring the show broader appeal, says Wood, is the desire to get newsmakers — even polarizing ones — to take part.
