When Cameron Douglas was in the dark throes of his drug addiction, the last thing he saw in his future was fatherhood. But today, in what feels like an almost miraculous happy ending to his harrowing journey, Cameron has achieved just that.

These days, three years after being released from prison, he is raising his 22-month old daughter, Lua, with long-time girlfriend, Viviane Thibes, 41, a yoga instructor, and marveling at the joy of being a dad.

“Having my daughter gives me a whole new perspective on life,” Cameron, 40, tells People exclusively in this week’s issue. “My daughter is a source of inspiration.

When we meet at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills, Michael Douglas has just battled afternoon traffic from Pasadena, where he was doing an errand while in town to present at the Emmys and do promotional press for “The Kominsky Method,” the Netflix comedy created by Chuck Lorre that bows Nov. 16 and in which Douglas stars.

“I hate traffic,” says Douglas, who lives with wife Catherine Zeta-Jones and their teenage daughter, Carys, in Bedford, N.Y., about an hour outside the city (son Dylan is a freshman at Brown U. in Providence: “He’s taking British colonial history in India — it’s him and six seniors.”). “The beauty there, I love it,” says Douglas of their leafy suburban hamlet in Westchester County, far away from the sprawling network of asphalt highways comprising Los Angeles.

The 101-year-old screen legend posed for a family portrait with grandson Cameron Douglas, 39, and his 4-week-old daughter Lua Izzy, whom he shares with girlfriend Viviane Thibes.

On Monday, Dec. 18, the 73-year-old Wall Street star’s son Cameron Douglas and his girlfriend Viviane Thibes welcomed their first child together — a daughter named Lua Izzy!

“Since Viviane has given birth to a beautiful healthy girl on Monday afternoon, I’ve been at their side ever since,” the new dad tells People. “I’m very happy.”

Cameron’s daughter’s middle name is a tribute to her great-grandfather, Kirk Douglas, who was born Issur Danielovitch, and later went by Izzy.

After the birth, the new dad took to Instagram to share his excitement.
